Dr. Meyer, Principal

Andersen Junior High School
1255 N. Dobson Rd.
Chandler, AZ 85224

Dear Dr. Meyer,

I am writing to apply for the 8th grade social studies teacher position at Andersen Jr. High. My
commitment to students and their education, as well as past experience in the classroom, makes
me a qualified candidate for this position.

It is important for students to learn important life skills in addition to the content and to learn
these skills and content in a safe environment. As a social studies teacher, my goal is to teach
students how to become critical thinkers by helping them to analyze sources and make
connections between what happened in the past and what is happening today, either in their own
lives or the world around them. I will also work to help my students build effective arguments
through research. By doing this, students will be able to argue their position more effectively and
have facts to back it up. Lastly, I strive to create a safe and collaborative classroom environment
by teaching students skills such as respect and responsibility. I will do this through a learning
environment in which students work in groups often to complete tasks and projects. This will
help create a safe and collaborative environment because it will build trust between students.
When students work together often, they begin to trust one another and they begin to want to
collaborate because they trust the people they are working with. They begin to respect one
another and understand that everyone needs to do their part when working in groups.

As a student intern, I have had the opportunity to create and implement lesson plans and to work
with students, including English Language Learners and those with special needs. These special
needs included autism, hearing impairments, speech/language impairments, and learning
disabilities. I have learned numerous practices to ensure student success and how to integrate
technology to keep the lessons engaging to young learners. For example, I have used Kahoot to
create interactive quizzes for students and have set up an Edmodo site for students. This Edmodo
site gave students a platform on which they could post assignments, ask questions, make
comments, and receive reminders about upcoming assignments.

I would like to schedule an appointment with you to interview for this position. I can be reached
at hcolliso@asu.edu or (208) 249-5995. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Hannah Collison
