1.0 Introduction
This document contains Ares rovers tender submission for the construction of EMPACTs
Mars lander. This document has been written in response to the criteria has been defined by STAR
Engineering document STAR Engineering Design Package.pdf, developed on behalf of STAR
ENGINEERING INC.
The main body as currently designed will be suitable for purpose. The material of construction
is a grade of PVC which is a plastic item that is going to endure the damage taking from falling.
The brief calls that the Mars lander must be designed such that no manual control is required
between the release and the end of the testing.
3.0 Criteria
Please note that in answering this tender, the criteria have been listed in italics and then the
Ares Rover response follows in normal text
4
3.1 Experience
Experience with the use of power tools, in particular jigsaw, bastard file & circular saw:
To construct the Mars Lander a variety of power tools will be required. To fully satisfy the
criteria the successful tenderer must have experience with the use of power tools with particular
knowledge and experience with the use of a jigsaw, circular blade and bastard file. When carrying out
steps requiring any of the tools mentioned above, a member of Star Engineering who is proven
experienced with this tool will be supervising and evaluating the tenderers skill. Lack of knowledge and
experience with the use of power tools can result in safety issues arising such as the risk of injuries
outlined in section 3.2 of the risk management.
Ares rover dont have any experience in using any of the tools that have been provided but
they have knowledge on getting to know of how to use power tools. Appendix A.1.1 shows one of our
staff using Bread board which contain diodes, resistors, capacitors and bridge rectifier in electrical
laboratory. Members also have sufficient knowledge about safety procedure as they are required to
follow safety instruction when they enter electrical Laboratories. Appendix A1.2 clearly state one of
the safety procedure to enter laboratory.
If the most suitable teeth on a blade are not used to cut the PVC it can result in chipping and
shattering of the plastic. This can affect the quality of the Mars Lander and its ability to perform.
Hence, the tenderer who has prior experience or suitable knowledge with cutting hollow PVC will be
looked upon favourably.
Our members dont have experience in cutting Polyvinyl Chloride but as appendix A.2 shows
that one of our member is using tab-centre transformer which provide 12 voltage and 24 voltage which
is dangerous unless who use it has experience. This way shows how our members can get experience
in using any new tool.
3.2 Communication
Easily accessible:
The successful tenderer, throughout the duration of the construction of the Mars Lander, must
be easily accessible to the design company. The most successful tenderer will be the group that will
have a presence on social media and can reply to inquiries within a day. This includes but is not limited
to the use of communicating by email, text messaging, Facebook and meetings. As a result, any
uprising problems, questions and changes to the equipment and methodology raised by the
manufacturers for the designers can be resolved immediately. Teams which do not adhere to this
criterion will not be able to be informed on any changes to parts of the project which can affect the
completion of the project. Regular updates on the progress of the build will be required to inform Star
Engineering and the client to ensure the project will be completed by the deadline to a high standard.
5
Ares Rover staff are easily accessible. As have been provided in Appendix B.1 that shows. Also,
we would like to suggest that Ares Rover contractors and Star Engineering make a group in one of the
social media Apps for fast communication.
Group Dynamics:
Communication within the potential manufacturer is crucial to the build of the Mars Lander.
Star Engineering requires the successful tenderer to be in frequent contact with each of their members.
Therefore, when an unplanned emergency arises and a member has not completed their part of the
project, the work of that person can be divided amongst the capable members to compensate.
Unsuccessful communication will result in tension within the group and incomplete prescribed tasks
which will lead to the unsuccessful construction of the Mars Lander.
Ares Rover staff are always in frequent contact between themselves. As have been provided
in appendix B.2.1 that shows a group chat in a social media App WhatsApp. This social media app
make it easy and fast to contact within our company staff. Also for any potential that our members
havent seen any updates have been sent in the group, as appendix B.2.1 provide that WhatsApp has
feature that shows if the updates have been delivered and if they have been read which is the most
important.
Tenderer is required to have or find the appropriate equipment to be used during the
manufacturing of the rover unless it is specified that Star Engineering will supply the equipment to be
borrowed for the project. However, in the event that both the tenderer and Star Engineering are unable
to supply the specified tool, the tenderer must resourceful and innovative by finding an alternative tool
with similar purpose. Before the commencement of the project a member of Star Engineering will be
checking that the equipment is suitable for use to build the rover. Tenderers are also required to have
appropriate clothing when manufacturing the rover for safety reasons. This includes wearing
appropriately long sleeved clothing, safety glasses and steel capped boots.
Ares Rover contractors would like to make sure for the designers that all the necessary tools
required for constructing can be provided except for drill press which is will be replaced by hand drill.
Appendix C.1 shows one of the tools which is hand drill. Also in the matter of challenging events, we
would like to mention that our Ares Rover industries was consisting of 5 members in the first week of
this in the start of this semester. This number has increased in the next week to 7 members and in the
end of week 3 this number decreased to 5 members again due 2 people have dropped out of the unit.
As result of that the work has been distributed 2 times and have put pressure in our team members in
week 4. However, our team members faced this challenge and finished their work. As this event shows
how we dealt with our challenge, it shows also how we will deal with any challenge we might face.
3.4 Competence
Must have an understanding of the basic procedure and how to build:
6
The tenderer must be able to thoroughly read over the procedure and design specifications.
Groups that familiarise themselves with the unit outline and marking rubrics as well as having
background knowledge on construction will be highly desired as it proves they are competent in
building and following instructions.
Ares Rover company have read thoroughly over the procedures. Star Engineering design uses
plastic materials to build the Mars Lander which is a good quality item that will absorb the damage
taking from falling and it is a suitable cost for the Mars Lander. The cargo will be placed inside the
stormwater PVC pipe after using hand saw and drill 20 mm bit to make a hatch. Also, having an inner
axle and outer axle which is support the endurability of the Mars Lander when it lands. Ares Rover
would like to assure for Star Engineering designer that as they are submitting this tender for their
company a number of marking rubrics have been provided from EFPC unit have been followed to
submit this tender application. Appendix D.1 shows the marking rubric for the tender application. The
marking rubric shows that in this tender should be Executive Summary, Design Review, responds to
every single tender criteria and Appendices. Therefore, as they have followed and applied every single
rubric in that marking rubrics, they would like to let Star Engineering designers know that this what will
happen for the marking rubrics as well as following their procedures.
The successful tenderer must be capable of working efficiently to complete the manufacturing
of the Mars Rover to a high standard by the deadline. This is achieved by planning ahead and
familiarising themselves with task deadlines. Previous group tasks and their outcomes will be
considered to get full marks.
Ares Rover Industries staff are staff precious time and being on time and dont move any step
towards anything unless there is a plan have been taken with a time-frame to finish it before the
deadline so they can review their work. Appendix D.2 Shows one task out of many tasks Ares Rover
industries took in stage 1 and finished them. The task is the design package from stage 1 of EFPC unit
and the deadline is 2/04/2017 and the package have been finished by 29/03/2017. Therefore, there
was 3 days to review the package. Also, appendix D.2 shows that Ares Rover staff are using Google
Drive to share a document and edit all their progress in there and that will give every member an idea
of where the other member at in their work.
