Francis Easter newness was the
fruit of his union with theCru-
cified and Risen One. This un-
ion is the secret of the Little
Poor Mans joy, his peace-
making skills, his enthusiasm
for the things of God, his
unique relationship with creation. Ill-
ness, disappointment, pain, betrayal and
misunderstanding still marked Francis
earthly pilgrimage. But, he saw these
sufferings in a new light. He understood
that through them, God was making all
things work toward an eternal good, an
eternal Easter. And so in Francis and
through him an unexpected joy and a
holy newness came into the world.

A Shepherd's View
Taking a walk with Jesus can
produce so much transformation
to our hearts and minds and
faith just as the journey on the
Road to Emmaus did for the
grieving followers of the Lord .In
today's famous walk, the Risen
Lord comes upon two followers
and listens to their woes. Jesus,
unbeknownst to them, interprets
the Scriptures as they walk together. When they ar-
rive eleven miles to their home, and after breaking
bread with Him, the eyes and hearts of the followers
are opened and they truly recognize Him as the
Christ! My favorite line is what they respond,
"Oh were not our hearts burning within us on the
journey as He opened the Scriptures to us?!!"
We, too, are people on the way. While we walk,
and meet others, we can be transformed! Think about
the time you first came to our Church? Wasn't it a
great feeling to be welcomed by everyone? Did you
feel the Lord's joy and love in your hearts? THAT'S the
spirit of the American National Catholic Church! I
also encourage you to take walks and pray...let Jesus
speak to you on the way. When you encounter
people, tell them about YOUR faith, YOUR love of our
Church, and let the great love of Jesus enter your
hearts and theirs.
The Road to Emmaus also reminds us that we
should join our faith to those that are grieving. Is
there someone you know that needs to go on "the
walk with faith" because they are mourning the loss
of a loved one? Tell them that we have Grief Counsel-
ing and Grief Groups that could help.
Now that the nice weather is here, take a walk
with the Lord that loves you! As a Shepherd, I do it
every day .... thinking and praying for you.
Live Jesus in our hearts,
