What makes an action morally good?

Utilitarianism
An action is morally right if it maximises
overall well-being.
An action is morally wrong if it does not
maximise overall well-being.

Deontology
The moral status of an action does not
only depend on the consequences the
action produces.
An action is morally right if and only if it
is universalisable and it treats human
beings as ends-in-themselves.

What makes an action morally good?

Virtue Ethics
An action is morally right if and only
if it is an action that a virtuous
person would do in the situation.
Moral virtues are character traits
necessary for a good human life.
For example, loyalty, benevolence,
justice, honesty etc.

Slide 5

Why care about the environment?

Individualism
Insofar as the environment has moral
considerability, it is only extrinsic, due
to the fact that it is useful for humans
and humans value it.

Holism
Ecosystems (and ultimately, Earths
entire biosphere) are intrinsically
morally considerable. The
environment as a whole is morally
valuable in itself. This is why such
theories are holistic.

Why be an ethical student?

Utilitarianism: Good academic conduct
is required because it maximises overall
well-being.

Deontology: Good academic conduct is

required because it is universalisable
and treats others as ends rather than
means.

Virtue Ethics: Good academic conduct is

required because it is how a virtuous
agent behaves.
For example, honesty and benevolence.
