Gs Classroom Safety Contract

Purpose-
The goal of my lesson plans and design for the class is that each of you get to explore concepts
through doing science. The best way to learn science is to do science. The only way this can be
done though is if it is clear what expectations you must hold yourself to. The rules below must
be followed at all times and if they are broken, the lab will be immediately stopped. These rules
are to help you stay safe so that you are able to explore without the risk of hurting yourself or
others. You must keep a copy of these rules in your binder as well as turn on in to keep on
record.

Before the Experiment-

Dress during the laboratory should not be loose or baggy. This is a hazard to
catching on something and causing it to spill or catch fire. This also includes long hair
needs to be tied back.
If lab aprons are necessary for the experient, you must keep it on at all time.
Contacts should not be worn in the laboratory unless given permission from the
instructor.
Any time chemicals, heat, or glassware are used, students will wear laboratory
goggles.
Keep chairs, bags, and other objects from the path to the exit door, shower, eye
station, and phone.
During the Experiment-
Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth and body while using chemicals or
preserved specimens.
Check the label on chemical bottles twice before removing any of the contents.
Take only as much of a chemical as needed.
Exercise extreme caution at all times.
Afternoon the Experiment-
Dispose of all chemical waste properly. Chemicals should not be dumped down a
sink drain but in proper waste containers labeled.
You must watch your hands with soap and water after all experiments. Surface
areas should also be wiped clean.

It is important that parents are involved in the conversation of safety for their students. Your
signature indicates that you read the above contract and are aware of the measures taken to
ensure safety of your student.

Respect. Integrity. Determination.

I want to have only one rule in my classroom, have your actions reflect respect, integrity, and
determination.

I view the most important thing in classroom management is to preventing problems from arising
through precautionary measurements. I want to avert student misbehavior before it even occurs.
The responsibility falls on me, the teacher, to ensure that my students are engaged in the
lesson. Through having inquiry style lesson plans and activities for students to participate in,
they are less likely to become bored and disruptive. There needs to be structured through in
inquiry style class. Students need to know what to expect when they walk in the door, even if
they dont know what activity they will be performing. This can be done through having essential
questions written on the board in a permanent place throughout the class so that they do not
have to ask the question, what are we doing today. On the board will also be the sequence of
events with estimated maximum time for the activity. Students then enter an activity knowing
with my directions what is expected of them as well as the timing expectation. In the time that is
usually wasted at the end of the class when students pack up, misbehavior can occur more
easily. Instead of students hanging around the door, I will have a routine at the end of the class
period to ensure maximum instruction. After providing a brief summary, reflection, review and
closure to the lesson, I will mix up formative assessment styles to test students on if they learnt
the key concepts of the day.

I should have formative assessments throughout the class to see if students are just going
through the motions of the lab/activity or if their minds are engaged in the learning. If students
are not actively learning the material and are just hands on then I know I need to mix up what I
am having them do, in order to ensure they are reaping the benefits from their time in my
classroom. The goal is that while I am assessing my students, I need to be assessing myself.
Teaching is an evolving career that is always pushing teachers to do more and try more to figure
out the best practices. I need to ensure I am not staying stagnant in my strategies but trying to
constantly learn more classroom management styles.

In my classroom students are held to a higher standard because they deserve to be. I want
students to surprise themselves by what they are able to accomplish. Positive rewards will be
words of praise, free time at the end of class to get ahead on homework, and reaching out to
parents of students who go above and beyond. Consequences will be having a stern talk with
the student after class, pulling the students desk away to limit their distraction on other
students, and pulling the student into the hallway to speak with them.

I want students to expect themselves to need to study for my tests. A week before my first test, I
will give them a sample with 5 questions. These questions will show the collabore of questions
that I expect them to be able to do. I want to prepare students for college and the only accurate
way to do this is through the expectations they need to put in work outside of the classroom in
their own time. Homework should not be additional work that requires them to teach themselves
something. It should be to enhance their current understanding through application. Grades
should be a reflection of the achievement of a student. The grade should be fair and
standardized so that they are comparable.
