Dear HP:

I am writing to apply for the Mechanical Engineering Intern position posted on your Careers page. I feel
that my education, employment, and personal projects have cultivated the skills that are needed for this
position.

I have been studying Mechanical Engineering here at the University of Idaho for three years, and over
that time I have completed a variety of classes and projects that have taught me about the many facets
of mechanical engineering. Most recently, I completed a project in my Dynamic Modeling of Engineering
Systems class, in which we created an inverted pendulum controlled via an Arduino Uno, using sensor
input from an accelerometer to determine how to drive the motor. This proved to be a simple but
interesting project, and it has driven me to learn as much as I can about creating control systems for
mechanical systems.

Another significant course that I have taken here at UI is the Computer-Aided Design course. In this
course, we were taught basic drafting techniques and given a variety of projects and assignments to
build our skills in Solidworks, the CAD software taught in the course. This culminated in a large final
project in which teams of around 6 people modeled, assembled, and animated an experimental diesel
engine called The Dux, only using engineering drawings as a reference. This was a challenging but
enriching experience, improving not only my skills with Solidworks, but my ability to understand
engineering drawings.

In my time here at University of Idaho, I have also been able to spend time working on a research
project creating and improving a fleet of autonomous mini-submarines designed to collect data in the
ocean. Most recently, I performed a survey of the market for IMUs, researching, purchasing, and testing
various IMUs to determine what would be a good fit for the subs. Soon, I will begin working on
implementing the new IMU into a sub and see how it performs.

While I have a lot of technical knowledge, I also have plenty of experience with working on substantial
projects, writing reports and creating documentation. Ive been cultivating these skills since my
Mechanical Design Analysis class, and have continued to improve throughout the many projects Ive
participated in during my time here.

I have included a copy of my resume with this cover letter. I am very interested in this position, and I
look forward to having an interview. Feel free to call me or send me an email at any time. I am looking
forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Nathan Park
