Informative Speech Outline Instructions

Specific Goal: My audience will understand the affect that owning a dog has on a persons life.

Application: My audience will learn different reasons why owning a dog may benefit their lives.

Ethos: Primary Ethos: My dog has helped me through the toughest times in my life.

Secondary Ethos: I will cite 5 references out loud in my speech.

Pathos: The story about how my dog helped me cope with losing my father better than any doctor
we went to.

Logos: I will use scientific facts, statistics and research to show my audience the benefits of owning
a dog.

Audience Assessment: My audience probably knows that dogs can be cute, protective, and nice to
have around but may not know the beneficial facts of owning a dog.

Adaptation to Audience: I will provide facts and statistics that one may not think about before
adding a fun furry friend to their family.

Pattern of Organization: I will use chronological in the introduction, and topical in the body.

I. Hook: My dad pasted away


A. I was 11 years old, and my mom took me to multiple therapists that
did not help.
B. Because that was not helping me, we got a puppy.

II. Thesis: Learning about different statistics on the effects of owning a dog may help you
decide if owning a pet will help your situation.

III. Preview: Ill share what I experienced and how my dog helped get me through it.
A. First, Ill explain the health and aid benefits of owning a dog
B. Second, Ill explain the positive effects of a companionship
C. Third, Ill explain the protection benefits that a dog may provide

Transition: Now that I have given you an example, Ill explain how owning a dog can help in
other situations.

IV. In fact, when it comes to pet ownership, there are a number of proven health benefits
for people, including physical, mental and emotional improvements, from enhancing
social skills to decreasing a person's risk of heart attack (Animal Planet, 2016).
Transition: Now lets see the positive effects of having a companionship.

V. Having a companionship may have positive effects on mental disorders including,


depression, anxiety, and loneliness.

A. The likelihood that the non-pet owners would end up being diagnosed as
clinically depressed was four times higher that found in the pet owning people of
the same age (psychologytoday, 2009).
B. While these studies do not always have consistent results, some positive
findings of interacting with a therapy dog include reduced levels of pain and
anxiety among hospitalized children and adults, as well as increased focus and
interaction among children with autism and other developmental disorders
(Center4Research, 2015).
C. Pets also combat feelings of loneliness by providing companionship, which can
boost your overall mood and even bring you feelings of joy and happiness
(Animal Planet, 2016).

Transition: Aside from the mental and physical health benefits of owning a dog, lets
talk about the protection benefits.

VI. A dog may prevent someone from trying to attack you, or your home.
A. Out of 100 convicted home burglars in prison, 83 responded that Advantages of
Personal Protection Dogs would have kept them from robbing that home
(Bullocksk9kennels, 2015).
B. Dogs barking can work to deter burglars and alert residents and neighbors and
studies show that burglars are less likely to target houses where dogs reside
due to the increased risks of detection, arrest or injury (petsafe, 2015)

Conclusion

VII. According to a national survey, most pet owners say companionship, love, company
and affection are the No. 1 benefits to owning a pet (Seattletimes, 2011).
