Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Chloe Fann Date: April 30th, 2017

Grade and Topic: Third Grade, Science Length of Lesson: 2 hours and 17 minutes

Mentor Teacher: Mrs. Murdock and Mrs. Phillips School: University of Memphis- IDT 3600

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

This lesson is part of a unit on the universe. A knowledge of the cosmos basic structure and operational

principles is described in TN state science standard 6.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:

Given access to a computer, the internet and PowerPoint software, TSW create a PowerPoint presentation

following guidelines with 80% accuracy.

Given access to a computer, the internet and Screencast software, TSW present the PowerPoint presentation

with 80% accuracy.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

State/District, Common Core Standards

TN Science-0307.6.1: Identify the major components of the solar system, i.e., sun, planets, and

moons.

ISTE Standard(s)

Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products

and processes using technology. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products or processes.

Create original works as a means of personal or group expression.

Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues.

Identify trends and forecast possibilities.

Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts,

systems and operations.

Understand and use technology systems.
Select and use applications effectively and productively.
Troubleshoot systems and applications.

Transfer current knowledge to learning of new technologies.

MATERIALS:

Checklist of what needs to be included in the project and rubric for the project

See attached (at bottom of lesson plan)

Computer with projection for the teacher to demonstrate on

Computers need to include: access to internet, PowerPoint, screencast and access to email

Computers for all students

Computers need to include: access to internet, PowerPoint, screencast and access to email

Headphones with microphones (at least one for every 3 students)

Sample of final project: http://screencast-o-matic.com/watch/cbhVnDXFBZ

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

TSW demonstrate a clear understanding of the major parts of the solar system through a PowerPoint

presentation.

Academic language is not addressed in IDT 3600

This lesson is a continuation of TN science standard 6

This presentation will be referred to as we continue to explore the universe.

I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for those

ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this lesson
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction: 12 minutes

TTW state the objective for the lesson. (1 minute)

TSW watch a video introducing the topic of the solar system (5 minutes)

http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/101-videos/solar-system-sci

TTW discuss with the students the eight different planets are and why we need to know about

them (6 minutes)

Why would we need to know about our solar system? What are

the eight planets? How could knowing things about our solar system help

you? Why would knowing this help you become a better student?

Procedures: 2 hours

TTW go over the eight planets with the students (5 minutes)

TTW then describe the research activity the students will complete (3 minutes)

Today you guys will be making a PowerPoint presentation and then using

screencast to present your PowerPoint. In your PowerPoint, you will need to include the eight

planets, the sun and earths moon, pictures of the objects, what the objects are made of, what

year the object was discovered, and a fun fact about the object. I will pass out a checklist and

rubric of things that you need to include in your PowerPoint. You will find all this information

using the internet. You have two days during science class to work on this. Are there any

questions?

TTW pass out a checklist and rubric to the students about what needs to be included in their

PowerPoint presentation. (1 minute)

TSW line up and go to the computer lab. TSW go to their previously assigned computers (if not

previously assigned, TTW have a seating chart the students will follow) (5 minutes)
TTW ask the students how many people know how to use PowerPoint. (1 minute)

TTW walk the students though how to use PowerPoint (5 minutes)

How to open PowerPoint, how to add a slide, how to change the design, etc. TTW

ask the students if they have any questions.

TTW walk the students though how to use Screencast (5 minutes)

How to open Screencast, how to start screencast, how to adjust the screen, how to

copy the link, etc. TTW ask the students if they have any questions.

TTW go over how to send an email and how to paste a link (2 minutes)

TTW ask if the students have any questions

TTW go through the checklist of what is to be included in their PowerPoint and the rubric (2

minutes)

TTW tell the students to raise their hand if they have any questions

TSW begin their project (1 hour and 30 minutes)

TTW be available to ask questions as the students need assistance

TSW email the screencast link to the teacher when they are done.

Closure: 5 minutes

TSW complete an exit ticket both days

On the exit ticket the first day, TSW name the eight planets and put an interesting

fact they learned that day

On the exit ticket the second day, TSW write an interesting fact about each planet

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:

The rubric for the exit ticket:

Rubric for the PowerPoint presentation is attached below
MODIFICATIONS:
Students who did not master the objectives: These students will work in a two-person group. The person they

are paired with will depend on the classroom environment. Ideally it should be someone who is a level above

and willing to work with the student.

Students who are ready for enrichment activities: These students should include additional information in their

PowerPoint. This information includes, information on the asteroid belt, and information on why Pluto is no

longer a planet. There checklist will be as follows.

Planets PowerPoint Presentation Checklist of Requirements

In your PowerPoint presentation, you will include the following information on the eight

planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune), Earths

Moon, and the Sun.

1. What year the object was discovered

a. For the Earth, Earths moon and the sun, put instead approximately how old

the object is
2. What the object is made of
3. Fun fact about the object
4. Picture of the object

You must go over all this information in your Screencast presentation.

Planets PowerPoint Presentation Checklist of Requirements: Modifications

In your PowerPoint presentation, you will include the following information on the eight

planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune), Earths

Moon, the Sun, and the asteroid belt. You must also include a slide with the following

information on Pluto and explain why Pluto is no longer a planet.

1. What year the object was discovered

a. For the Earth, Earths moon and the sun, put instead approximately how old

the object is
2. What the object is made of
3. Fun fact about the object
