Sandhyavandanaisthegreatestdisciplineof16kriyasinwhichtheuniversallightofGayatriisinvoked.Practice
ofthismeditationleadstocosmicconsciousness.Thisistobepracticedduringtheearlyhoursofthemorningand
evening.Thosewhowanttopractiseitintenselycanmeditatefourtimesadaythatis,earlymorning,middayearly
evening,andmidnight.Thosewhoobservethissadhanaordisciplinerigidlybeforethesunriseandsoonafterthe
sunset,whichareconsideredasthehoursofpower,shallcertainlyhavetheirthirdeyeofwisdomopenedwithina
shortperiodoftime.Thosewhocannotmeditatefourtimesadayshouldatleastobservetwice,thatisinthe
morningandintheevening.

InthewholeofSandhyavandana,therearesixteenkriyss:twelvearetobeobservedbeforethegreatmeditation
andthethirteenthkriyaisthegreatmeditationonGayatri.Afterthemeditation,theremainingthreearetobe
observed.

ACAMANA
Acamanaorthreetimessippingtheholywaterisforpurifyingthebody,mind,andthesoul.Itpurifiesthegross,
astral,andcausalbodiesaswell.Thisdisciplinecalmsoursenses,stopstheoscillationofthemindandmakesus
feellikemeditating.TheHolyNameofGodthatisrepeatedaswesipthewaterrelievesusofallpainandsickness.
Therefore,itissaidinthescriptures,"HolywateristhebestmedicineforallillsandGodisthebestphysician."

Oneshoulddotheacamanasitting.Oneshouldnottalkorlaughorstandduringtheacamana.Acamanashouldbe
donepouringaspoonofwaterintothecavityoftherightpalmandsoppingwithdevotiontheholywater,chanting
themantraOmSriKesavayaSvaha,meditatingonthemeaningofthemantraas,"SalutationstoLordKesava."
Aftersippingtheholywater,onehastotaketherightpalmoverhisheadandbringbackthepalmforsippingthe
secondtime.ChantingthemantraOmSriNarayanayaSvaha,"SalutationstoLordNarayana",oneshouldsipthe
waterwithreverenceandtaketherightpalamabovetheheadasbefore.Andagainonehastopouraspoonof

Ayamameansexpansion.Thedisciplinethoughwhichthebreathisexpandedisknownaspranayama.Bybreath
exercise,manattainslongevity,health,andextraordinaryenergy.Allailmentscometomanduetolackofenough
oxygensupplytoallthenandisinthebody.

Mind,breath,andsemenarecloselyrelated.Ifoneiscontrolledamongthesethree,theothertwoareautomatically
controlled.Bycontrollingthebreath,themindisbroughtundercontrolandthesemenortheenergyisconserved.
Bymindcontrol,manattainsperfectconsciousnessandbypreservingthesemen,longevity,health,andcreativity
aregainedandmaniscapableofhelpinghumanitybydoingnobledeeds.

Deepbreathingsuppliesenoughoxygentothelungsandthesystem.Itpurifiesthebloodandblesseswitha

InhalingisknowninSanskritaspuraka.Holdingthebreathisknownaskumbhaka,andexhalingisknownas
recaka.Thesethreeprocessesaretotallyknownaspranayama.Asyouadvancedurationbychantingthree
GayatrimantrawhileyouholdthebreathchantingoneGayatrimantraduringeachinhalationandexhalation.

suchadevotionalcommitmentmakesyouverydeartoGod,whoacceptsyourthough,word,anddeedasan
offering.

UsuallyinSankalpakriya,orthemakingofanobledecisionformeditation,thedevoteereflectsonthecycles,the
periodsofbeginningofcreation.Thisshowstheremoteantiquityofthiscreationandeternityofthesoul.Inthe
evolutionaryprocess,whichisanexpansionofconsciousness,oneisnowblessedwithahumanbirth,agivenyear
andatimeinwhichoneisprivilegedtoservetheAlmightyLordtoattainliberationallthesearerememberedthrough

theeighthstanza,heshouldofferthewatertotheearth.Chantingtheninthstanza,onceagainheshouldsprinkle
thewateroverhisownhead.

Ifthemarjanakriyaisdoneinariver,thenonehastotaketheholygrassinone'shandtosprinklethewateronthe
headbychantingthemantra.
