Tutorial 2

Question 1.

The process stream data for a heat recovery network problem is given in Table 1.

Table 1 Stream Data

Stream Type Supply Temp. Target Heat Capacity
Ts (oC) Temp. Tt Flowrate
(oC) (kW/oC)
1 Cold 60 180 3.0
2 Hot 180 40 2.0
3 Cold 30 150 2.2
4 Hot 140 40 4.0

By using Tmin = 10 oC, design a maximum energy recovery network.

Question 2.

The stream data for a heat recovery network problem is given in Table 2.

Table 2 Stream Data

Stream Type Supply Temp. Target Temp. Heat Capacity
Ts (oC) Tt (oC) Flowrate (kW/oC)
1 Cold 80 100 3
2 Cold 40 120 5
3 Cold 40 100 1.5
4 Hot 150 60 2
5 Hot 140 70 4

By using Tmin of 20oC;

i) Perform the Problem Table Analysis for energy targeting.

ii) Design a M.E.R network.
iii) If a cold stream is added to the data in Table 2 of the following
characteristics:
Stream Type Supply Temp. Target Temp. Heat Capacity
Ts (oC) Tt (oC) Flowrate (kW/oC)
6 Cold 30 70 1.0

What effect will this have on QHmin, Qcmin and the pinch temperature?

iv) Design a network for M.E.R including the new cold stream

Question 3.

For the process stream data given in Table 4.

Table 4

Stream Type Supply Temp. Target Heat Capacity

Ts (oC) Temp. Tt Flowrate
(oC) (kW/oC)
1 Cold 160 400 1.5

2 Hot 400 120 1.0

3 Cold 100 320 1.3

4 Hot 340 120 2

By using Tmin of 20oC;

i) Complete a Problem Table Analysis to determine QHmin, QCmin and the

pinch location.
ii) Design a M.E.R. network with the corresponding minimum number of
units.
Question 4

The data in Table 3 represents a simplified petrochemicals process.

Table 3 Stream Data

Stream Type Supply Temp. Target Heat Capacity
Ts (oC) Temp. Tt Flowrate
(oC) (kW/oC)
1 Cold 18 123 0.933

2 Cold 118 193 1.961

3 Cold 189 286 1.796

4 Hot 267 80 0.204

5 Hot 159 77 2.285

6 Hot 343 90 0.538

By using Tmin of 10oC;

Design a heat exchanger network for maximum energy recovery with the
corresponding minimum number of units (Hint: below the pinch, stream
splitting may be necessary away from the pinch to avoid loops and therefore
more than the minimum number of units)
