ItwasmyfirstdayhereatVirginiaGarciaandafterhavingmetwithnurseJulia
Solano,sheintroducedmetoPeter,amedicalassistantwhoIwouldbe
shadowingfortheday.AfterhavingintroducedmyselftoPeterhebeganto
givemeatourofthefacility.Hereheshowedmethingssuchasthedifferent
departmentsthatwereavailableatVirginiaGarciasuchasoptometry,physical
therapy,andetc.Asweweregoingthroughthefacilityhealsopointedoutto
mesomeamazingprogramsavailableforVirginiaGarciapatientssuchasfree
Zumbaclassesandalsosomegreatcookingclassesforpatientssufferingfrom
Diabetes.Themajorityofthedaywasspenttouringthefacilityandonthat
samedaytherewerebusesofhighschoolerscomingtovisitVirginiaGarcia,so
manyofthestaffmemberswerehustlingtogetthefacilityreadyforthevisitors.I
helpedbycreatingandorganizingthepacketsthattheyweregoingtohand
outtothestudentsintofolders.Ileftshortlyafterhavingcompletedthistaskand
thatbasicallysumsupmyfirstdayatVG(VirginiaGarcia).

TheseconddayofmyinternshipIwasintroducedtoanothermedicalassistant
namedMichelle.Shewasveryhelpfulandwaskindenoughtoletmebeher
shadow.Iwouldsitatthedeskwithherandwatchhertypeinpatient
informationandaskedmanyquestionswhichdidntseemtobotherher.She
kindlyansweredmyquestionsaboutwhatcertainabbreviationsmeantand
whatapatientwashereforandetc.ThroughoutmytimethereIfollowedher
outtothewaitingroomtocallinpatientsfortheirappointments.FromthereI
wouldwitnesshertaketheirvitalsandweight.Iwouldgointotheroomwithher
andthepatient,withthepatientsconsentofcourse,andlistentothereasonas
towhytheyarethere,theirallergies,anymedicationtheyvebeentaking,and
etc.Thatwouldcompletemyseconddayofmyinternship.

Thethirddayofmyinternshipwasmuchlikemysecond.Iwouldsimplyshadow
Michelleandseepatients.Itwastoughunderstandingmanypatientspartially
becauseofthelanguagebarrier.AmajorityofthepatientsspokeSpanishas
theirfirstlanguageandalthoughIdoknowsomespanishandwasableto
understandmostofwhattheyweresaying,Iwouldhavetoeventuallyask
Michelleafterweleftthepatientsroomforthedetailsontheirproblemsmainly
becauseIamnotveryfluentintheSpanishlanguage.OnthisdayIwasableto
witnessMichelleprickamansfingerwithatinyneedleinordertogetthetiniest
dropofbloodthatwouldthenberunthroughamachinethatwouldtellus
whetherthatpersonisdiabeticornot.Asforthemanwhosebloodweran
today,hecameupasnegativewhichcameasarelieftoeveryoneespecially
sincehischancesfordiabeteswerequitehighconsideringhisfamilyshistoryof
diabetes.

OnthefourthdayofmyinternshipIcontinuedtoseepatientswithMichelle.This
timeIwasabletohelpwiththepreparationofmaterialsneededtoinsertanIUD
intoapatient.AlthoughIsadlywasnotabletowitnesstheactualprocedure
itself,itwasstillhelpfultolistentoMichelleexplaintheproceduretothepatient
becausenotonlywasitmakingthepatientmoreknowledgeable,butalso
myself.ThisdayIlearnedmorethanIeverknewaboutdifferentcontraceptives.
Notonlythat,butitwasquiteexcitingformebecauseIwasabletolistentoa
patientscomplaintsoflegpainandwasabletosuccessfullydiagnosehimwith
shinsplints!ThiswasthankstomyAnatomyandPhysiologycoursefrommyjunior
year.

ThisisthelastdayofmyinternshipandIhavetosayithasbeengreatgettingto
knowthestaffandespeciallyMichelle.TodayIwitnessedtwomorepatientsget
testedfordiabetes.Onecameoutpositiveandtheothernegative.Wesawa
patientwhocameininquiringaboutbirthcontrolandtookaurinesamplefrom
hertotestittoseeifshewaspregnantornot.Apparentlythatisprotocolfor
prescribingbirthcontrolpills.Thesamplecamebacknegativeandthepatient
wasabletospeaktothephysicianaboutwhatherchoiceswere.
