SYNCHRONOUS MACHINE

1. A 3 phase, 50 Hz, 8 pole alternator has a star connected winding with 120 slots and 8 conductors
per slot. The flux per pole is 0.05 wb, sinusoidally distributed. Determine the phase and the line
voltages. (Ans: 1699 V, 2942.8 V)

2. A 3 phase, 6 pole, star connected alternator revolves at 1000 rpm. The stator has 90 slots and 8
conductors per slot. The flux per pole is 0.05 wb. Calculate the voltage generated by machine if
the winding factor is 0.96. ( Ans: 2214.7 V)

3. A 6 pole alternator rotating at 1000 rpm has a single phase winding housed in 3 slots per pole, the
slots in group of three being 20 apart. If each slot contains 10 conductors and the flux per pole
is .002 wb, calculate the voltage generated . ( Ans: 383.5 V)

4. A 3 phase, 1500 KVA, star connected, 550 HZ, 2300 V alternator has a resistance between each
pair of terminals as measured by direct current is 0.16 . Assume that the effective resistance is
1.5 times the ohmic resistance. A field current of 70 A produces a short circuit current equal to
full load current of 376 A in each line. The same field current produces an emf of 700 V on open
circuit. Determine the synchronous reactance of the machine and its full load regulation at 0.8
power factor lagging. ( Ans: X= 1.068, 22.8%)

5. A, 3300 V, delta-connected motor has a synchronous reactance per phase (delta) of 18 W. It


operates at a leading power factor of 0.707 when drawing 800 kW from the mains. Calculate its

6. A 1000 kW, 3-phase, star-connected, 3.3 kV, 24-pole, 50 Hz synchronous motor has a
synchronous reactance of 3.24 W per phase; the resistance being negligible The motor is fed from
infinite bus-bars at 3.3 kV. Its field excitation is adjusted to result in unity pf operation at rated
load. Compute the maximum power and torque that the motor can deliver with its excitation

7. A 2500 V, 3-phase, star-connected motor has a synchronous reactance of 5 W per phase. The
motor input is 1000 kW at rated voltage and an excitation emf of 3600 V (line). Calculate line

8. A 100-MVA 12.5-kV 0.85-PF-lagging 50-Hz two-pole Y-connected synchronous generator has a


per-unit synchronous reactance of 1.1 and a per-unit armature resistance of 0.012. (a) What are its
synchronous reactance and armature resistance in ohms? (b) What is the magnitude of the internal
generated voltage EA at the rated conditions? What is its torque angle at these conditions? (c)
Ignoring losses in this generator, what torque must be applied to its shaft by the prime mover at

9. A three-phase Y-connected synchronous generator is rated 120 MVA, 13.2 kV, 0.8 PF lagging,

voltage regulation? (b) What would the voltage and apparent power rating of this generator be if
it were operated at 50 Hz with the same armature and field losses as it had at 60 Hz? (c) What
would the voltage regulation of the generator be at 50 Hz?

10. Calculate the value of synchronizing power in kW for one mech degree of displacement for a 3

11. Two similar 400 V, 3 phase alternators share equal kW power delivered to a balanced three phase,
50 kW, 0.8 pf lag load. If the power factor of one machine is 0.9 lag, find the power factor and
current supplied by the other machine (Ans:.701 lag and 51.4 A)

12. A 3 phase, 10 KVA, 400 V, 50 Hz star connected alternator supplies the rated load at 0.8 pf
lagging. If the alternator resistance is 0.5 and synchronous reactance is 10, find torque angle
and voltage regulation. ( Ans: 18.9, 47.98%)

13. A 400 V, 50 Hz, delta connected alternator has a direct axis reactance of 0.1 and a quadrature
axis reactance of 0.07. The armature reactance is negligible. The alternator is supplying 1000 A
at 0.8 lagging pf.
(a) Find the excitation emf neglecting saliency and assuming Xs=Xd.
(b) Find the excitation emf taking into account the saliency. (Ans: (a)437.15 V, (b)436.9 V)

14. Two 1000 KVA 3 phase alternator are operating in parallel and supply a load of 1500 kVA at 0.8
lagging pf. If one of the machines is operating at 0.4 lagging pf and supplying 800 kVA, find the
output of other machine and the power factor at which it is operating. (Ans: 730.98 kVA,0.6566)

15. A 500 kVA, 3 phase, 10000 V, 50 Hz alternator runs at 1500 rpm, connected to constant voltage
busbars. If the moment of inertia of the rotating system is 1.5 10^4 kg m and steady state short
circuit current is five times the normal full load current, find natural time period of oscillation.

16. A 10 MVA, 10 KV, 3 phase, 50 Hz, 1500 rpm alternator is paralleled with others of much greater
capacity. The moment of inertia of the motor is 210^5 kg m and the synchronous reactance of
the machine is 40%. Calculate the frequency of oscillation of rotor. (Ans: 0.2 Hz)

17. A 1000 kVA, 11000 V, 3 phase star connected synchronous motor has an armature resistance and
reactance per phase of 3.5 and 40 respectively. Determine the induced emf and angular
retardation of the rotor when fully loaded at (a) unity pf, (b) 0.8 pf lagging and (c) 0.8 pf leading.

18. A 2000 V, 3 phase star connected synchronous motor has an effective resistance and synchronous
reactance of 0.2 and 2.2 per phase respectively. The input is 800 kW at normal voltage and the
induced line emf is 2500 V. calculate the line current and pf. (Ans: 254.4 A, .09081 lag)

19. A 3 phase synchronous motor of 8000 W at 1100 V has synchronous reactance of 8 per phase.
Find the minimum current and the corresponding induced emf for full load condition. The
efficiency of the machine is 0.8. Neglect armature resistance. (Ans: 5.249 A, 636.49 V per phase)
20.A 3 phase, 400 V synchronous motor takes 52.5 A at a pf of 0.8 leading. Determine the induced
emf and the power supplied. The motor impedance per phase is (0.25+ j 0.32).
