UWRT 1103

Cameron Hall
Upon entering UWRT-1103 I looked at it like any other writing course I've taken so far. In previous writing
coursescourses, a lot of writing and not as much enjoyment took place. This course so far seems to look
at writing in a more interactive way which allows for me to write more about things that involve me rather
than about written texts. I feel writing about me and my interests will allow me to be able to produce more
quality writing.

Marching Band (RHETORICAL KNOWLEDGE)

Mount Airy High School
Mount Airy High School was the place where I took marching band for the 3 years I
could. I learned how to cooperate with a large group to make various formations on
the field and I learned how to play while marching. For those who do not know about
marching learning how to control the upper and lower portions of your body
separately is a hurdle that is hard to get over. My senior year I got to learn about
marching band from a whole new perspective, drum major, I learned just how much
work went into making our band work. I got to work on my RHETORICAL
KNOWLEDGE skill while conducting the band. Any choice I made while conducting
would change how the students on the field will play, and in turn change what the
audience hears. This change can make a show better or worse, so it was on me to
have the marchers play in a way that will produce a good message.

Acting (KNOWLEDGE OF CONVENTIONS)

Mt Airy Public Library
It was here where I first learned the basics of acting, such as projection, memorization of lines, and how
to face the crowd. I began acting during my freshman year of high school. A lot of my friends were acting
already and I wanted to join in. So, after school I would walk with a few friends from high school to the
public library where "The Dewey Decimal Players" met, rehearsed, and performed. The Dewey Decimal
Players are a small acting group in my hometown made of kids from ages 8-18, it is a close group that do
several plays every year. Here I worked on my KNOWLEDGE OF CONVENTIONS skill as I learned how
to act during the different scenes I took place in, from a mad scientist's garage, to filming on the crime
scene. I got to learn what the viewers would expect of me in any of the scenes I played with. While I did
stop acting when band got in the way during my senior year of high school, I did always enjoy it and have
strongly considered finding a group somewhere around Charlotte while I'm here.

Engineering (COMPOSING PROCESS)

Pilot Mountain

It was here where my hunger for engineering first began. I would come to Pilot Mountain just about every
weekend with my dad to visit my great uncle, Johnny. While with him he would constantly give me
questions that would get me to thinking. these problems would vary from simple brain teasers to projects
that he would be working on for his job, and his home. More recently of these projects was making a wind
turbine for his home. We discussed ways to make sure that the turbine would turn in just about any
direction of wind in order toto produce power for him. Working on small projects like this did wonders for
improving my COMPOSING PROCESS as we would begin with napkin or post-it drawings, and how the
project would work and come together. Then we would buy parts or change parts that he already havehas
and build. I'm very lucky to have my uncle for without him giving me that influence early on I probably
wouldn't have any idea of what I would want to do with my life.

Performing Music (CRITICAL REFLECTION)

Jones Intermediate School
It was here where I first began performing music. I say performing because I didn't play trumpet here, but
I did sing. This is where I decided I wanted to join the band, but more importantly the beginning and end
of me singing for show choir was here. My mom along with a few older ladies from our church choir had
always said I had a good singing voice and so my mom convinced me to join show choir here. During my
time in show choir I got to work on my CRITICAL REFLECTION skill as I read the sheet music and
thought about what notes were next and how I would sing the rhythms. I must have been pretty
decentdecent considering I was one of the 4 kids in show choir chosen to sing at our instructors wedding.
Since my time in show choir, I haven't really sangsung with any groups as I stopped singing once I got
into band inband in middle school. While I don't really sing in front of large groups anymore I still sing
when I'm around friends or alone.

Technology Know-How (CRITICAL READING)

Mount Airy
In my hometown, generally throughout I picked up my general technology knowledge. Early on when my
parents bought me a game boy advance and I began to improve my CRITICAL READING skill as I
learned the game mechanics with any game that I bought. I kept playing these games, and I kept getting
new devices with more and more information to interpret. I have learned how to deal with new
technologiesmodern technologies and to excel way beyond any of my family. I still get new gadgets, and
takes me no, if anytime at all to know how to use any new technologymodern technology that comes my
way.
