Your Name: Amal Mahdi

Title of Lesson: Deforestation
Grade: 5th

STANDARDS
NOTE: Please list at least two complete standards your lesson plan covers. [Common Core
State Standards (math and language arts), Next Generation Science Standards (science),
Arizona State Social Studies Standards (social studies)].

SC05-S1C2-P5. Record data in an organized and appropriate format (e.g., t-chart, table,
list, written log).

(5.SL.4) Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and
using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes;
speak clearly at an understandable pace.

LESSON SUMMARY/OVERVIEW
Provide an overview/synopsis of the lesson and the topics that it will cover. Make sure to
provide a reason why you selected this to be relevant for a unit on sustainability?

Students will use their research to create a T-chart of positive and negative impacts of
deforestation. They will discuss and share their T-chart with a partner. Teacher will create a T-
chart together as a whole class using the students ideas. Then, students will write in their
notebooks solutions to stop or reduce deforestation. They will discuss it with a partner their ideas
then report to the class. This is relevant to sustainability, because it gets students thinking about
how to save their future by saving and taking care of their environment.

OBJECTIVES
Describe what you want students to know/be able to do as a result of the lesson.
For example, Students will be able to

Students will be able to create a T-chart by using their research to discuss positive and
negative impacts of deforestation.
Students will be able to discuss solutions of reducing deforestation from their notes to
save their environment.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION
What measures will you use to know if you students met the objectives?

Informal: Teacher will collect students T-chart to see if it is completed.

Formal: Students will write a short paragraph discussing solutions or reducing trees.

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE
What will students need to know prior to completing this lesson and how will you access
their prior knowledge?

Students should be able to know how to take notes.

Students should know how to share with a partner.
I will remind everyone how to properly take notes and think pair share with a partner.

MATERIALS
List of required materials.

Paper
Pencil
Notebook

VOCABULARY/KEY WORDS
List of key vocabulary terms.

T-chart: T-Charts are a type of graphic organizers in which a student lists and examines
two facets of a topic, like the pros and cons associated with it, its advantages and
disadvantages, facts vs. opinions, etc.

TEACHING PROCEDURES
Procedural Steps (Step by step instructions for teaching the lesson):

The teacher will state and write the objective on the board. Teacher will explain what
students will be doing which is creating a T-Chart. Teacher will explain what a T-chart is
and talk about the use of a T-chart. On the board, the teacher will draw a teacher. The
students will listen and ask any questions they have.
The teacher will create an example teacher as a guided practice for the students. The
students will follow along.
The teacher will explain to the students that they will be using the research from the
previous lesson to create a T-chart. The teacher will tell the students to write positive and
negative impacts of deforestation. The students will create a T-chart and write down
positive and negative impacts using their notes from the research from sources.
As the students create their T-chart, the teacher will walk around and ask some guiding
questions, such as, Why do we cut down trees? or What do we use trees for? and What
are the impacts of cutting down forests? Students will think about those questions and
try to answer them.
After finishing their T-chart, students will discuss and share their T-chart with a partner.
They will discuss the positive (if any) or negative impacts of deforestation. Then, as a
whole class they will share it their T-chart.
The teacher will create a T-chart using the students ideas.
Teacher will then ask students to think about ways to reduce deforestation, how to reduce
the use of wood product. They will share facts from their research and their personal
solutions. Students will share with their partner of their solutions to save trees in our
environment. Students than share with the whole class their ideas and solutions using
facts and relevant ideas.
Teacher will then discuss solutions such as planting trees to preserve the environment,
using products made from other materials, recycling/reusing and using less.
Techers then will tell the students to write a paragraph of solutions and why we need to
preserve trees.
Teacher will than close by stating why trees are important to the environment and why we
need to think about how to prepare for the future so we can have a healthy environment.

WAYS OF THINKING CONNECTION

Provide a complete explanation of how your lesson plan connects to futures, system,
strategic, or values thinking. Define the way of thinking you selected and used in this
lesson plan. Remember, this should be included meaningfully in the lesson plan.

In this lesson, students will be using and connecting to future and strategic thinking. Future
thinking is thinking about how the past or present might influence the future. As they write their
T-chart they will be writing down negative or positive impacts that deforestation has on the
environment. They will use their research to see what kinds of impacts does deforestation has on
our planet. Having them look at the consequences can lead them to think about the future of the
environment they live in. Students will also be using strategic thinking. Strategic thinking is
coming up with a strategy or plan for a particular vision or goal. Students will think about
strategies that will reduce deforestation or preserve trees. As students think about strategies they
will be thinking about how they can save the environment they live in. Coming up with their own
strategies can motivate them to take actions and follow through with their ideas.
