Lesson title: Mosaic Art with Tape

Age range: 2nd grade

Medium: Tape and paper

A. Description:
Students will begin by learning about what a mosaic piece of art is and
the different ways that you can make a tape mosaic. Students will draw
or form a picture in their mind that they want to do on their pieces of
paper, next they will tear pieces of tape in a variety of sizes to form their
picture. The picture that they choose to do can be something to
symbolize him or her or something meaningful to them. Students will
utilize the skill of collage making by altering their materials to form the
picture that they choose to make.
B. Enduring ideas/essential questions:
- By using free expression, what can you show about yourself through
your artwork?
- What are qualities of the materials that we are using? (Think about the
texture, the materials, how we rip the tape or cut it.)
- Are there other ways we can do this?
C. Objectives (the participant will):
- Explore a new way to alter materials by ripping or cutting the tape
- Consider how artwork can all be different even if the same prompt is
given
- Utilize an understanding of the qualities of the materials to create
artwork where expressive ideas are used intentionally
- Students will work diligently throughout the entire lesson

D. Arizona Visual Arts Standards:

Creating:
Anchor Standard #1- Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and works
Make art or design to explore personal interests, questions, and
curiosity.
Anchor Standard #2- Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
Experiment with various materials, tools, and approaches (such as
using elements and principles of modern art, applying artistic ideas
from diverse cultures) to explore personal interests in a work or art
design.
Anchor Standard #3- Refine and complete artistic work
Discuss and reflect with peers about choices made in creating
artwork.
Anchor Standard #8: Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work
E. Instructional approach:
- Direct Instruction
- Individual work
- Group discussion
F. Vocabulary:
- Mosaic
- Altering materials
G. Materials/resources:
- Different colors of tape (provided)
- Paper
- Scissors (if wanted)
- Colored pencils (if wanted)
H. Activities/sequence:
1. Students will learn what a mosaic is and the different ways that they
can be created
2. Then the students will take out paper

3. Next they will draw or formulate a picture that they want to draw on
their paper
4. Then they will choose tape to fill in their pictures by either ripping or
cutting it depending on how they wan their artwork to look in the end
5. Once they are done with their artwork we will have a short discussion
about what their artwork represents and a recap on what we learned
I. Accommodations:
- Students will be allowed to do whatever type of drawing that they want
as long as it is something that is important or represents them.
- This project could also be split between days to allow for time to draw
first and then add the tape.
J. Enrichment activities:
The enrichment activity will be when the students explore the techniques
that they used when tearing the tape and putting it into your artwork and
then comparing it to how their classmates did it and what they came up
with.
K. Closure:
In the end we will have a group discussion about their artwork and
compare it to each others to see what each of them were thinking when
they were coming up with their artwork.
We will also discuss the materials that we used and if there is other
approaches that we might be able to use.
During the discussion some key questions that I would ask:
- What techniques students used to make their artwork (did they rip it,
cut it or a combination of both)?
- What were you thinking about when you made this piece of art?
- What types of emotions were you feeling?
- By altering new materials, what did it teach you? Overall I would also
ask them what they learned from this assignment, whether its from
altering materials or the new vocabulary that they learned.

L. Assessment procedure:
Formative Assessment
Conga Line: The students would stand in front of one other student and they
would discuss their artwork in front of one another, then they would move
down the line to the next student. Before the students do this, we will
discuss as a class some key questions that they can ask one another and
also some things that they should tell each other about their art.
- What techniques worked for you when altering the new materials that we
used?
- Describe your artwork to the other student that you are in front of
- Why did you decide to do this?
- What emotions were you feeling?
Another assessment that I may use-
4-3-2-1:
Students will write in their notebooks after their discussion. First they will
write 4 things they learned from this project, 3 things that they liked about
this project, 2 things they would change, and lastly 1 thing they will never
forget from it.
- Students will hopefully discuss the vocabulary that they learned, the
different ways that they learned to alter materials, and the type of artwork
that they ended up creating.
Summative Assessment
For the summative assessment the students will do a quick write about what
they learned from this lesson. Key questions will be what techniques were
used? How did they alter the materials in order to make their artwork?
Lastly they will define both of the vocabulary terms. Since this is for second
grade, the vocab terms may be multiple choice, short answer, or fill in the
blank.

N. Notes/additional reflections during or after teaching the lesson:

I felt like the lesson did go very well overall. We all had our own ideas on
what we wanted our artwork to look like; no one based it off one anothers. I
felt like this lesson was very versatile for different age groups with certain
modifications. Overall I felt like this lesson was a fun way to explore new
materials in the classroom.
While coming up with the lesson it was still a little difficult to come up with
those key concepts that I wanted my students to learn. I really think that I
have trouble with this because in the classroom that I am in this semester
they do art about once a week, but I do not always feel like there was a key

objective that she wanted them to learn besides integrating it with another
subject like history when they did the paper lanterns and they learned about
what those were and their importance. I can see where to find objectives
when paired with other subjects, but when it is just tape and a canvas to
come up with artwork, I found it was difficult to go deeper into my objectives
so I think that is something that I need to still work on.
The lesson itself I found to go very well and I enjoyed teaching another
lesson this week.
