means to be an American, and dig deep
within themselves to work on that means to
them.

Summary This lesson will begin to help students have a sense

Procedures Introduction:
Sit down with the students and show them the book
that you are going to read. Do not have them talk,
but just talk with a partner, for one minute on what
America Is.

Have a group discussion, about what they think

America is, and write up on a giant butcher paper all
ideas.

Discussion:
Once all the pairs are done, write all the
words that the students marked on their own
sheets up on the board.
Go over all words and talk about them
putting them a relatable context as well as
giving them the definitions.

Follow-Up:
The words that come up the most often should
become the words that you use for your word wall
and spelling for the week or month.

Project: Students will write their own poems about

America, and also draw a corresponding photo.
Assessment: To assess the students, I will look over each
students sheets and be able to see what kinds of
words they have trouble saying and can target a
specific plan of action for them.
