AppendixB:FormforCE(ClinicalEducator)Observation

Student teacher, you are responsible for uploading a copy of this observation to TaskStream and
Blackboard. Your CE should complete at least 2 observations during the student teaching experience.

CE Name: Meredith Jarrett

Observation #: 1 of 2
Date: February 23, 2017
Subject Area: Science-Heat Trasnfer

1. Did the lesson unfold in the way the student teacher had planned? Please explain.
Yes, the lesson went as planned. Ms. Grubb used her smartnotebook to present information
about the different types of heat transfer. She incorporated technology and kinesthetic
movement into her science lesson.

2. Were the learning targets clear for the lesson? Did the students gain a true understanding of
the learning targets?
Yes, Ms. Grubb introduced the lesson by starting with the learning target and by reviewing the
learning target at the end of the lesson.
Learning Target: I will learn about the different types of heat transfer; conduction, convection
and radiation.
She begins by hooking her learners by asking. What is heat? What ways does it travel?
hot/cold
Ms. Grubb introduces the different types of heat transfer by showing a rap song to introduce the
different types of heat transfer.
Students worked with their table group to complete the heat transfer quick check (proving their
understanding of heat transfer)
Ms. Grubb assessed student understanding by doing the quick check and the Heat Transfer
Gallery WAlk

3. Were the students engaged throughout the lesson? What suggestions do you have for the
student teacher in terms of student engagement?
*Draws on students prior knowledge of Gulf Stream/Land and Sea Breezes (relating it to
convection)
*Students were taking notes in their science notebooks about Heat Transfer
*Students were engaged in active discussion where they were agreeing and disagree about
different types of heat transfer (students were debating over how different toasters could display
different types of heat transfer)

*Students really enjoyed the Gallery Walk Heat Transfer Activity; students recorded their
understanding on the sheet.
4. Was classroom management an issue during the instruction? What strategy/strategies do
you have for the student teacher to improve classroom management?

Students are expected to raise his/her hand and wait to be called on. Continue to monitor
students who are engaged in off task talking. Instead of students yelling out yes, have them
celebrate by putting a check :0

5. If the student teacher taught this lesson again to your students, what changes would you like
to see?
**I would spend more time going over the different types of heat transfer (reading about heat
transfer/story about heat transfer) Maybe do that first? Ms. Grubb did give them a reading
activity after the Gallery Walk providing students with more examples of the different types of
heat transfer.
During the Gallery Walk, instead of just identifying the different types of heat transfer, have
students explain WHY/HOW they know it is the different type of transfer.

6. What are some overall steps the student teacher should take in order to further strengthen
his/her meaningful facilitation of content delivery?

Ms. Grubb did a great job of incorporating movement/unique way to identify student
understanding of heat transfer. She was able to use students responses from the Gallery Walk
to identify which students did and did not understand the different types of heat transfer.

Date of Post - Conference: February 24, 2017

Specific Feedback for the Student Teacher:

*Continue to monitor student engagement during lesson delivery (some students were coloring
pictures of different examples); some girls were have a conversation while you were explaining
the different types of toasters

*Get students to restate who one student says to reinforce understandings (call on those
students who you dont think are engaged to clarify)

Questions / Concerns for University Supervisor:

Clinical Educator,
Once the observation has been completed, please conduct a post-conference with the student
teacher and share your perceptions of their progress. Once the post conference has been
completed, please email a copy of the final draft to the student teacher and the University
Supervisor. (Dr. Jason Parker - jlparker@gardner-webb.edu)

Student Teacher, Please upload a final copy of your observation to the appropriate dropbox on
Blackboard.

Thanks!
