What are test techniques?

Quite simply they are means of elicitng behavior from candidate which will tell us abot their
language ability. There are some kind of test which used to know about overall ability of someone
in their language knowledge. There ar as follow:

Multiple Choice

Multiple choice which has been recomanded to used for testing of many language abilities. The
advantages of multiple choice techniques were so highly regarded at one time that it almost
seemed that the only way to test.it is only fairly recently the techniquess limitation has more
generally recognized by professional tester. Any way this is the example of multiple choice:

Ardhi has been here..a half of hour.

a.while

b.during

c.for

d.since

But there is some difficulties of multiple choice.there are as follows:

The techniques test only recognition knowledge

Multiple choice couldnd get an overall information about the ability language from
candidate if there a lack between productive and perpective skill. Ex: when we want to
find out the ability of English in use from candidate. We cant just test by the grammar or
structure but we need to see from the writing and speaking ability to.

Score

GRAMMAR IN USE

Witting GAP Speaking

Guessing may have a considerable but unknowable effect on test score

One of the weakness of multiple choice is we dont know when the candidate answer the
question truly base in their skill or just guessing.beause when they are guessing the
accurate of the test is just 33 percent from 100.
The techniques severaly restrict what can be tested

The multiple choice test need some item to be the good one. The difficulties there on
distractor.that is really important thing but there is some word or word form has an
ambiguity.example in present to past tense form the word see-saw.that saw we can
clarified with a machine which for saw out the tree or past form from see.

It is very difficult to write sucessful item

The difficulties still in the distractor. There is some rule to writte a distractor such
as:more than one correct answer(dont make distractor with more than one correct
answer), no correct answer, and there are clue in options as to which as correct (correct
answer has a different lenght to the others)The bad distractor will influence the result the
the test would be inaccurate.

Backwash may be harmful

If a test is regarded as important, the preparation for it can come to dominate all teaching
and learning activities and if the test content and testing technique as at variance with the
objectives of the course, then there is likely to be harmful backwash. Backwash need not
always be harmful ; indeed it can be positively beneficial.

Cheating may be facilitated

With this technique will facilitate students cheating, because students will not learn to
think and assume everything easy

CLOZE PROCEDURE

The cloze technique has in addition been recomended as a means of measuring reading ability.

In its original form, the cloze procedure involves deleting a number of word in apassage leaving
blanks, and requiring the person taking the test to replace the original word.

In cloze procedure, even if you are a native speaker of English , you will found difficult, perhaps
imposible.
Example :

Other example :

The cloze procedure seemed very attractive. Cloze test were easy to construct, administer, and
score.

Unfortunately, cloze procedure could not deliver all that was promised on its behalf. Even if
some underlying ability on its being measured through the procedure, it is not possible to predict
accurately from this what is peoples ability wich respect to the variety of separate skills
(speaking, writing, etc.) in which we are usually interested.

There is need for careful selection of texts and some pretesting.

Some research has explored the possibility of using close passage based on tape-recordings of
oral interaction to predict oral ability but this type of material would not normally be used in a
test for non-native speakers as it is very culturally bound, and probably only somebody from a
British background could understand it fully.

The C Test

The C-Test is really a variety of cloze, which its originators claim is superior to the kind
of cloze describe above. An example follow :

There are usually five men in the crew of a fire engine. One o....... them dri.... the eng...... . The
lea.... sits bes..... the dri..... . The ot..... firemen s..... inside t.... cab o.... the f..... engine. T.... leader
h.... usually be.... in t..... Fire Ser..... for ma.... years. H..... will kn.... how t... fight diff.... sorts
o..... fires. S...., when t..... firemen arr.... at a fire, it is always the leader who decides how to fight
a fire. He tells each fireman what to do.

The supposed advantages of the C test are that only exact scoring is necessary (native
speakers effectively scoring 100 per cent), that a wider range of topics, styles, and levels of abilty
is possible, and C-Test of 100 items takes little space and not nearly so much time to complete
(candidate do not have to read so much text).Possible disadvantages relate to the puzzle like
nature of the task.

However, research would seem to indicate that the C-Test functions well as a rough
measure of overall ability in a foreign language.
Dictation

Dictation there since 1960s then dictation was using for might test punctuation and
spelling.Dictation test give result similar to those obtained from cloze tests.in the predicting
overall ability they have the advantageof involving listening ability. Certainly they are as easy to
create but hard to score.misspell word become the problem when the phonological is broken.with
poorer student scoring become tedious.
PREFACE

What are test techniques? That is eliciting behavior from candidates which will tell us about their
language ability. There is some kind of techniques test can be use to get the information of
candidates language ability. In order to arriveat the best solution for any particular situation, the
most appropriate test, it is not enough to have at ones disposal a collection of test techniques
from which to choose.
