A preposition is a word placed before a noun or pronoun to show its relationship to
some other word in the sentence. A prepositional phrase will function as an adjective
or adverb. As an adjective, the prepositional phrase will answer the question Which
one? As an adverb, a prepositional phrase will answer questions such as How?
When? or Where?

The preposition is always followed by a noun or pronoun. (There may be one or more
modifiers in between...He walked with his little sister.)

There are approximately 30 commonly used prepositions. It is very helpful to memorize

these.

about, above, across, after, against, among, around, at, before, behind, beside, between,
by, down, during, except, for, from, in, near, of, off, on, over, through, to, toward, under,
up, with

Write S above the subject of the sentence, V above the verb, circle the prepositions in
the following sentences, and put parentheses around the prepositional phrase. (Hint--
There may be more than one per sentence.)

Prepositions (Recognizing Prepositions)

A preposition links nouns, pronouns, and phrases to other words in the sentence.

Examples:
 The book is on the table.
The book is beneath the table.
The book is leaning against the table.
The book is beside the table.
She held the book over the table.
She read the book during class.

The most common prepositions are about, above, across, after, against, along, among,
around, at, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, between, beyond, but, by, despite,
down, during, except, for, from, in, inside, into, like, near, of, off, on, onto, out, outside,
over, past, since, through, throughout, to, toward, under, underneath, until, up, upon,
with, within, and without.
