Instant Activity (4-5 minutes): Cha Cha Slide

Walk in and find a poly spot and begin step touching! We are going to start todays lesson
by practicing our Cha Cha Slide for the whole school dance show! I am very excited to
see you all perform in front of your family and friends. Remember for this dance the
whole school is performing so 3rd Grade is paired with 1st graders. Lets begin.
Introduction (1-2 minutes): I think you all are ready to perform in front of all of your family
and friends. Who is ready to dance some more?

Content Development (2-3 minutes): Today, we are going to continue or dance unit so
throughout the class lets keep our bodies moving and having fun! By the end of class today, you
will be able to create your own dance using the movement concepts and pathways we have
learned! Do dance moves have to be serious and only dance moves we have learned in line
dances? NO! You can find inspiration from everything in your daily life. In our first activities,
we are going to find inspiration for our dances from Sports Pictures!

T1: Move and Freeze(3-5 minutes)

When the music is on I want you to travel throughout the gym. (Call out a variety
of locomotor movements: jog, run, jump, hop, leap, skip, gallop) When the music
is off, I want you to freeze and look at the nearest picture then stop in that
position. Placed around the gym are pictures from a variety of sports! When the
music freezes you are to mirror the sport picture closest to you.

Great job, now when we are learned our dances what beat did we count in? (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8)

T2: Individual Dance (3-5minutes)

Now that we have practiced freezing in our own shapes. We are going to create a
dance using our sports pictures. I want you to pick three of your favorite pictures
that were on the cones. I am going to count an 8-count.
You are going to:
Start the dance frozen in the shape of picture 1 for 8 counts
Next, travel to picture 2 using a locomotor movement for 16 counts.
Whats an example of a locomotor movement you can move in?
Slowly freeze into picture 2 for 8 counts.
Travel to picture 3 using a locomotor movement 16 counts
End at picture 3, by turning in the shape and freeze.

Culminating Activity
Small Group Dance (14-20 minutes)
Now that we have practiced our individual dance skills I want you to find a group
of three or four. I want you to make a dance that includes two 8-count beats. Your
dance should include different locomotor patterns: skip, leap, jump, hop, step side
to side, moving at different levels(high, low) and should flow from one move to
another. Your dance sequence can include any of the equipment that is found over
here. Be creative! At the end of the class your group is going to teach the dance to
the rest of the class! This is where I want you to show me your creativity. We have
learned traditional dances, non-traditional dances, completely funky dances, and
even dances incorporating sport! Remember this is a safe space for everyone so
feel free to let your creativity shine.

How do we be a good audience member? If you were performing how would you
want the audience to treat you?

Closure (3-5 minutes):

Great job today, I loved how everyone was actively engaged the whole class period.
Dance is a great way to stay moving while having fun! Now for the PTA dance, each
grade is going to perform their own dance. What songs dare you going to perform for the
PTA? T
