 Surface Design Awards 2017

THE Surface Design Awards ceremony was held at the Business
Design Centre in February. The lunchtime ceremony, held during the
annual Surface Design Show, was hosted by Mick Jordan, Editor of
Mix Interiors.
The best Public Building Interior Award, sponsored by PEFC UK, went
to an exciting Shanghai project entitled Skynet. The core material
used in its construction was Glulam. The designer, Kris Lin of Kris
Lin International Design, employed a jointing technique known as
joggling which is frequently used in traditional buildings in China.
PEFC UK sponsored the award to raise awareness of the PEFC
programme within the influential architecture and design communities.
The award was presented by PEFC UK Chairman, Ross Bradshaw.

PEFC Photo Competition

PEFC UK will be running a photographic
competition on the theme of Experience
Forests, Experience PEFC. The aim of
the contest is to raise awareness of the
importance of sustainable forest management
and forest certification. Were looking for
pictures showing how people use the forests
for commercial reasons or relaxation and
also how wildlife such as birds, animals and
insects may use them for food and shelter.
The competition will kick off on Earth Day on
22nd April and close on World Environment
Day on 5th June. There are three national cash
prizes to be won and winners will be announced
by the end of June. The winning photos will then
be entered into an international competition to
find a worldwide winner and the chance to win
a further prize.
Entrants will be able to submit their
photographs through Instagram, Facebook
and our dedicated microsite using the
hashtag #PEFCUK&IRE. All further details

A Simply Super PEFC UK COMPANY SPOTLIGHT

NOW that spring is finally here, the annual

garden show season is already underway. So,
on a seasonal note, our featured company
of the month is Pepe Garden Furniture.
Pepe will be exhibiting its range of garden
furniture at 30 leading shows, including next
months Chelsea Flower Show.

SIMPLY Cups is the UKs only disposable cup
recycling scheme. The scheme was launched
in 2014 with a view to addressing the issue
of how best to recycle the 3-5 billion paper
cups used in the UK each year. Simply Cups
have partnered with the UKs leading PEFC-
certified paper cup manufacturers to increase
levels of recycling. Founding members of
the scheme include Costa Coffee, Bunzl,
Huhtamaki and Benders Paper Cups.
After collection, used cups are bulked and
baled for reprocessing. The bales of cups are
either sent to a dedicated carton recycling
facility, ACE UK, or made into a range of new

Pepe is a British family company which
uses Scandinavian concepts to produce a
range of quality garden furniture that can
be left outside all year round. The company
uses Scandinavian Redwood (Pinus
Sylvestris), sourced from PEFC-certified
forests in Finland, to manufacture its
range of stylish outdoor furniture. Timber
harvested in the cold, Finnish climate is
slower grown material than that produced
in the UK. This slow growth rate produces a
dense, easily machined raw material which
will last for up to 20 years in the UK, with
some basic maintenance.
Certified since 2005, Pepe Garden furniture
was one of the first companies in the UK to
obtain PEFC Chain of Custody certification.
The company uses its certification
credentials to provide customers with
assurances of responsible timber sourcing.
Its designs have also been accredited with
the Award for Ergonomics and Safety in
Construction by the Furniture Industry
Research Association (FIRA).

UKWAS Update Amazon Fresh Opts
ENDORSED by PEFC and FSC, the UK Woodland Assurance Standard
for PEFC
(UKWAS) is the certification standard used for verifying sustainable
woodland management in the UK. Following a two-year revision process, a
final draft of the UKWAS 4th Edition was completed last May. This version
was due to be re-endorsed by both schemes before the end of 2016.

However, the standard failed to meet the requirements of FSCs

therefore added in December. The revised standard is currently
being re-evaluated by FSC. If this latest version is accepted, the PEFC
endorsement process will recommence. Until UKWAS 4 is finally
