The most important federal
agency, at least in terms of
the scope of its mission, was
the War Industries Board.
The Board was established in
July of 1917 . Its purpose
was no less than to assure
the full mobilization of the
nations resources for the
purpose of winning the war.
The real choice for the
economic effect of the war
appeared to be between two
options: raising taxes, or
borrowing from the public.
Economists from the time
said that raising taxes was
the way to go. In October of
1917 Congress founded the
War Revenue Act, this act
increased the personal and
corporate tax rates and
established more taxes on
the public such as the luxury
tax.
The dominant weapon of
World War One was artillery,
which accounted for about 70
percent of all casualties. It
could fire a shell weighing
half a ton upwards of 15 km
(10 Miles), almost invariably
at targets that had been
identified hours or days in
advance. With the
construction of the Howitzer
artillery cannon in the start of
WWI, the battlefield changed
forever. These cannons were
an improvement of the
previous cannons who had
an effective range of less
than a mile. These Howitzer
cannons could shoot a 15in
projectile weighing half a ton
up to 10 miles away

he believed that industrial
history is addressed in high
school history textbooks
today. He believes that it is
covered well enough to give a
starting base knowledge for
students interested to take
further higher skilled classes
at college. While I personally
do not agree with that
statement, Dr. Wilson also
gave insight on many
questions I asked about the
economic effect of military
