Reflection from prior lesson: The students have nearly mastered their multiplication tables. They have had some
exposure to separating things into equal groups. This is the first lesson where they will be exposed to division.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards: 3.OA.2 Interpret whole-number quotients of whole numbers.

Lesson Objectives: After the lesson, students will be able to divide using one-digit numbers with 80% accuracy.

Materials Needed:

-Whiteboards
-Marker
-Daily math sheet
-Saxton Intermediate 3 math textbooks
-Pencils

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics: Each student at Rustic Acres is an ESL student. There are 9 students in
grades 3-8. There are 7 boys and 2 girls. There are no students on formal IEPS. However, there is one student who
has to move around in order to concentrate he is permitted to do this to a certain extent.

A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (3 minutes)
getting attention 3rd grade, I want to introduce you to someone. His name is the Great Divider.

help of a person named the Great Divider!

2. Content Delivery (45 mins)


a. Story of Great Divider Teacher will tell students about an evil person named the Great Divider, whos
only goal is to come and slice things into equal groups.
b. Modeling Teacher will model one-digit division by using the Great Divider and his sword as a story
line. Teacher will draw 8 balls. The Great Divider has come to divide or slice this group of balls into 2
equal groups. Watch as I take his sword and divide the balls into 2 equal groups. Teacher will
demonstrate. Now you try.
c. Guided Practice Students will, one at a time, try another example problem with the Great Divider.
Teacher will guide students through each step.
d. Independent Practice Students will complete division lesson in Saxton math textbook.
3. Closure (3 mins)
a. Tomorrow, you get to be the great divider by separating marbles, pennies and cubes into equal groups.

C. Differentiated Instruction
i. Further Independent Instruction: Teacher will provide further 1:1 practice for the student, if student is
having difficulty grasping the concept.

Reflection: Division is a hard one to teacher, and probably an even more difficult one to understand for the first
time. I wanted to make division relatable somehow to the students. They had just finished their superhero/villain
stories, so I decided to create a character called the Great Divider. This helped to familiarize division for the
students, and there were lots of laughs throughout the lesson.
