Rhetorical Analysis Essay
Presidency

Advertisement; a notice of announcement in a public medium promoting a product,

service, good or publicizing a job vacancy. Through advertisement one may promote themselves

or a goal in which they may achieve whether it be a product in which they wish to sell or a

position in which they wish to obtain. It is the year of 2016 ,and the time in which many are

familiar and some are not, is upon us. The Presidential Election began this year the process has

been a long one which has started from choosing candidates to represent us from primary

elections of the two parties all the way to deciding the future President of the United States for

the next four years from the Candidates we elected to represent our political party in the

primaries. One may say that the key to a good election is promotion through a blast of

advertisement mainly through the televisions of the American people, there may also be

adverstisement else where such as radio ads, magazine ads, and social media promotion on apps

such as Twitter. The purpose of said ads are to reach a certain group of people who share the

same beliefs as the candidate and to hopefully sway voters who either side with the opposing

view or simply neutral on the topic Commercials have had the most effect for the simple fact that

everyone watches television. While analyzing the two candidates commercials one would

examine their; target audience, media choices, historical context such as past events that molds

the overall message of the ad, and the composition of the Ad.

While reviewing the first commercials of the two candidates Clinton and Trump one can

clearly see their target audience or the people theyre trying to sway in order to obtain their

vote. In Trumps Presidential ad he uses speech tactics such as hasty generalization creating
statements that stem from little to any actual evidence. Within Trumps ad he states that he is

willing and ready to build a wall with the intent to enforce more strict laws on immigration.

These sweeping statements are meant to appeal to those who feel that there should be a more

strict policy on immigration and support the idea of a wall being created to divide the countries.

While Clintons commercial speaks on the downfalls of her opponent, she hits her target

audience with exact quotes from her Trump such as A person who is flat-chested is very hard to

be a 10 which creates feelings within her voters that Trump is being judgemental of the female

body and belittling woman as a whole by body-shaming small breasted women this appeals to

the female mass of the United States in which Hilary hopes to win.

Both candidates use these ethical appeals to sway voters in their target audiences to

target their sense of duty of right and wrong. While Clinton uses a more logical approach within

her commercial. Clinton stated direct quotes from Trump himself on certain topics mainly those

against women ,and their rights as citizens. Do you treat women with respect? asked to Trump

by a talk show host he responds Ugh, I cant say that either. Even though these statements are

from his earlier days they may still sway voters come election day. Clintons logical and ethical

appeal may benefit her greatly due to the fact that she has created feelings within voters that

Trump is an awful human being ,and provided some direct quotes to prove it.

The composition of the Commercials are also a vital role in how voters may perceive the

messages that the candidate is trying to display. Hilarys ad depicts Donald as a scoundrel in

which he is slandering womens rights ,and foreign policies. Examples such as Donald believing

in building a wall will strike her voters and the others that still remain neutral to believe that

Trump is racist and a firm believer in America ending communication and travel with certain

countries. While her running mate Trump also follows a similar route he does not follow the
route of slander that she approached within her commercial. Trump uses glorifying statements

within his commercial to support his ideology for example, Temporary ban on Muslims

entering U.S. ,and Its Radical Islamic Terrorism these are just examples of the many

statements in which he uses loaded words to create a sense of justice that he will offer to the

people of the United States if he is elected president.

After composing their ads ,and slandering each others name within the commercial and

stating what they believe in the next large component of proper promotion is placement how the

televise their ads will dictate if they are being viewed or not and whether they are being viewed

by the correct mass. This will ultimately make or break the candidates advertisement , if who you

are trying to reach out to does not receive your message there was no point in sending it. They

will be wasting their money ,and time if they dont place these commercials on the correct

stations in which their voters and neutral voters watch.

While composing both of commercials of course historical events that have taken place

will mold the campaign of the two candidates and either benefit them or destroy them. Within

Trumps commercial he uses the recent bombing of Boston and other terrorist attacks to create a

radical terrorist movement that he will remove from American soil. While in the wake of rapist

allegations against Trump, Clinton uses his trials to engage her female voters to take up against

Trump due to the fact that he is being trialed and everything else that he stands for.

With the analyzation of the two one may draw a conclusion to be persuaded by a certain

candidate. The effectiveness of these commercial stem from their aim at target audiences,

compositions of ads ,and their use of historical context to engage certain voters to side with their

partys belief. Only one will tell how effective these promotions are when the results of the
election are drawn up and we so who our new President of United States will be for the

upcoming future.
