Content
The teacher will evaluate the students drawing, listen to them respond to the read aloud
questions, and monitor and listen as students discuss their pictures with peers.

Small groups are based on the level of the students. Some students will work on letter
recognition while others are working on sight words at their small groups or reading to
self.
Read Aloud-
So this week we are going to continue to talk about persuasive writing. Whats that
again? Right, youre trying to get someone to do something or believe what you believe.
We are going to read a book and I want to see what the person is trying to persuade
someone to do.
-Read the book
Throughout, ask questions like
What are they persuading their mom to do?
What are they saying to convince her?
have you ever said things like that so your parent would buy you something?
Did you know that you persuading them??
(10-12 minutes)
Independent Practice-
Send students back to their tables to work on their I wanna pictures. They will be
drawing a picture of an animal they want, and they will write the name at the bottom of
the paper. After they are finished drawing, they will need to find a partner at their table
group and tell them what they would say to convince them to buy them that pet. would
you talk about how great it is? What you could do for it? What are some ways the boy in
the story convinced his mom? How are you going to do that?
(10-15 minutes)
Closing-
Choose a child to come up to the doc cam and share their picture and reasons someone
would buy the animal for them.
Small group-
The only group we will pull today is the low group. We will play a letter/sound recognition
game.
This was not my favorite lesson that I taught. I tried to plan it with my students in mind,
but it still did not quite hit the mark. I planned it so they could talk to each other since
my students do not do a lot of writing in class. I planned for them to draw for several
minutes and then discuss with their peers for several minutes, but this did not happen.
Several students drew in about 30 seconds, and then chose a partner and discussed for
a few seconds. I expected this to last at least 10 minutes and some students finished in
one. That meant that they were on the floor playing while others were still working. I
should have made my expectations clear from the beginning. I would have all children
draw for at least 5 minutes and then model for the students what I wanted the
conversation to look like. I did model this, but only to the few students sitting on the
floor at the time. If I could do it over, I would bring all the students to the carpet to
model for everyone, then I think more students would have been successful.
