AND CLASSROOM BLOG CREATION TOOLS

Name: Cherish Gresham

Directions: Using the template below, describe how students could use a blog, wiki, or other website-
creation tool to learn required learning standards in your content area: For an A grade provide an idea that
reaches a Level of Technology Implementation of 4 or above. Remember higher levels (4-6) require that
students assume adult/professional roles; engage in higher-order thinking; and use technology
create/publish original content for their classmates and/or others beyond their school/classroom. The
learning activities and products should be engaging and meaningful to the students and to others who will
view/use/benefit from students work. Review your handouts on Engaged Learning, Authenticity, and LoTi.

Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed: Content Area: SKCS5. Students will
communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly.

a. Describe and compare things in terms of number, shape, texture, size, weight, color, and motion.

b. Begin to draw pictures that portray features of the thing being described

Brief Description of Learning Experience: What learning standards will be addressed? What will
students and teachers do? What products will students create? How will the project be introduced? How
long will it take to complete? What audience will use/care about the product(s) students are creating? How
broad is this audience? Students will find four items in their house that they can describe and compare.
They will draw pictures of each item and upload their items and pictures on a blog post for others to see. In
class, the students have been comparing items in terms of number, shape, texture, size, weight, color, and
motion. With this prior knowledge, the student is responsible for finding items within their homes that they
can describe and compare.
A scientific based audience will have the opportunity to review each blog post. The scientific community is
very broad and they would love to see what items the students picked to compare and describe. The
students will have 1 week to find their items and upload their findings to the blog post. At the end of the
lesson, students will get to peer review others findings and compare and contrast them with their own.

Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating

Student Engagement/Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): What LoTi would this lesson be and
Why? This lesson will be a LoTi level 5. Students will be able to assume adult roles by uploading their
findings on a blog post for others to see. They are using all 6 levels of Blooms Level of Critical
Thinking for this lesson.

Importance of technology: Why is using a website-creation tool critical to the project? Could the project
be completed without this technology? What would be lost without using it? What other types of
technology, if any, are going to be used in the learning experience? Using a web-creation tool is critical
for this project because I want the students to be able to assume an adult role by creating a blog post.
I also want them to gain a sense of confidence when other scientific analysts comment on their work.

This project could be completed without technology but it will eliminate the use of the scientific
community. There will be no other forms of technology used for this project.

Inspiration (optional): I came up with this lesson idea on my own.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Briefly discuss some possible issues surrounding Internet safety and
student privacy that could arise while implementing this learning experience and explain how you would
(1) minimize risks to students/yourself; (2) alleviate any fears by parents/administrators, and (3) follow
common Internet Safety/Acceptable Use Policies. Some possible issues that could arise surrounding
internet safety are issues with the privacy of student information. I would alleviate this by:
1. Making sure all posts are anonymous by using nicknames
2. Making sure all posts are posted at school with heavy supervision
3. Making sure the name of the school is not displayed for others to see
4. Making sure parents sign permission slips for this activity
5. Comments on blog posts must be approved by the teacher before they are displayed
6. Parents have the option of obtaining the child
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. What are you trying that you have not tried
before? What do you hope to learn from this activity? How do you hope it will help students learn?

I have never tried a blog activity with students. I think this activity will give students a chance to assume
adult roles while also partaking in a very educational experience. I hope to learn if the students will enjoy
the activity but I also am interested in their findings as well. Im hoping it will help students learn how to
describe and compare items in terms of number, shape, texture, size, weight, color, and motion.

Other comments about your proposed activity: Parents are advised to help find items within the house
for the students.
