Weaimtoencouragemembersofthelocalcommunitytoutilisereadilyavailable
recyclablematerialsinordertocreateasustainableandmobileboxgarden.Thisentails
alowmaintenancedesigninordertomaximisetheefficiencyofwatering,
accommodatingforthebusylifestylesofmembersofthecommunityandthosein
disadvantagedsituations.Thiscreatesasimpleandstreamlinedtransitionintohome
gardeningandprovidesacheapandreadilyavailablesourceoffoodforfamiliesand
thecommunity.Theprojectwillalsoteachcommunitymembersaboutaffective
gardening,compostingaswellastheimportanceofanutritiousandhealthydiet.

Theprojecthastwosectionsinordertoincreaseoutreach.

Thefirstsectioninvolvestheplanningandcoordinatingoftheevents.Beforetheevent
occursaprojectplannerwillensuretimelyreleaseoftheinformationonwhenthedates
andtimesareandrequestparticipantsbringamilkcratesizedbox(orlarger)aswellas
aplasticbottle.Duringtheday,usingthesematerials,ademonstratorwillshowthe
participantshowtomaketheirowngarden.Aneventmanagerwillbepresentto
coordinatethetwoplannedevents.Furthermore,membersoftheHobsonsBayLeaders
ofTodaywillactasasupportforcommunitymemberswhoattend,lendingthemtheir
servicesandknowledgeintheconstructionofthegardenstoensurenoparticipantis
leftconfusedorunsure.Thedemonstratoratbotheventswillalsoteachparticipants
howtocompostandsustainablewateringtechniquesinordertogetthemostoutof
theirnewgarden.ThedemonstratorwillalsoreferbacktotheAustralianGuideto
HealthyEatingtoencourageconsumptionoforganicfruitandvegetablesforthe
participants.Onthedaywewillbeprovidingtheotherrequiredmaterialsinorderto
makethegardenwhichincludestheGeofabric,scoria,andseedlings.Atotalofthree
eventswillbeheld,twoofwhichwillbeopentothegeneralpublic,theotherwillbea
smallereventtargetedatalocalcommunityorganisationwhereyoutharethemain
focus.

Thesectionsectioninvolvesthecreationoftheonlinecontent.Duringoneofthetwo
publiceventstherewillbeamemberoftheHobsonsBayLeadersofTodayrecording
thedemonstratormakingthebox,explainingaboutgardening/composting,aswellas
theimportanceofanutritiousandhealthydiet.Thefootagecollectedwillthenbeedited
andinturnpublishedonlineinordertoincreasereachmembersofthecommunitywho
couldnotattendeitherevents.

locationstheywillbeheld.
Thereisnoconfirmeddateandlocationasofyetforthetwoeventsopentothepublic.
WeareaimingtohosttheeventduringtheSeptemberOctoberholidaysiftime
permits,ifnotthenduringMarchofnextyearduetothisbeingplantingseason.The
holidayswerechoseninordertomaketheeventfamilyfriendly,andsinceourfocus
groupisyouth,thiswouldmakeitpossibleformoreyouthtoattendsuchevents.The
locationsmayincludelocalparks,whichareclosetotransport,makingiteasierfor
publictransportreliantindividualstoattend.

Theprojectmanagerwillcontactalocalorganisationthatworkswithyouthinorderto
arrangeatimeandplaceforthelastevent.HobsonsBayLeadersofTodayrecognise
thatwithrisingobesityrates,youngpeopleneedtonowunderstand,morethanever,
theimportanceofahealthydiet,andthuswewanttoholdaneventforyoungpeoplein
particular.Thiseventwhichisyettobeconfirmedmayinvolvealocalprimaryor
secondaryschoolorevenanorganisationwhichcaterstothehomelessyouthresiding
inHobsonsBay.

Briefdescriptionofwhatthegrantfundswillbeusedfor:
Theentiretyofthegrantfundswillbeusedinsourcingmaterialsnecessaryinorderto
helptheparticipantsbuildamobileandlowmaintenancegarden.Sometimesthecost
ofpurchasingsimplethingssuchassoilandseedlingsareabarrierforsome
individuals,whichiswhyweareprovidingthematerialsourselves.Furthermorethe
designofthegardenrequiresmaterialssuchasBuilderFilmwhichiscostlytopurchase
individually.Thefollowingmaterialsareneeded:
SmallVegetablePunnets:Forsmallerboxes
LargeVegetablePunnets:Forlargerboxes
HerbSeedlings:Forindividualswhowouldpreferthem
PottingMix:Toplayer
GeotextileMembrane:Toseparatethescoriaandpottingmix,andallowwaterfromthe
layerofscoriatotranspiretotherootsabovethemembrane.
Scoria:Tolayerthebottom.Waterispoureddirectlyintothislayerandwaterwill
transpiredirectlythroughtheGeotextileMembranetowardstheroots.
MushroomCompost:Ademonstratoronthedaywillteachparticipantshowtostart
composing.Howeverinordertohelptheinitialgrowthoftheplantswhileparticipants
createtheirowncompostathome,weareprovidingsomecompostfirst.
BuilderFilm:Toactasprotectionandpreventleakagesthroughthesideafterwatering.

Howwillthisprojectbenefityourorganisation?
Thisprojectsupportsourmissionasanorganisation,whichseekstoaidyoungpeople
withinourcommunity.FurthermorethisprojectwillbenefitTheHobsonsBayLeadersof
Todaybyprovidinguswithinvaluableeventmanagementskillsforfutureandgreater
events,whilstalsoincreasingthecommunitysawarenessofourexistence,allowingus
toreachawiderportionofthecommunityforfutureprojectsweundertake.

Whatcommunityneed/swillthisprojectmeet?
Byprovidingmembersofthecommunitywiththeskillsnecessarytocreateagarden
constructedfromrecyclablematerials,thisprojectwillnotonlyassistinreducingthe
wasteoutputofthecommunitythroughincreasedunderstandingofcompostingand
alternativewaystoutiliseusedcontainers,butalsohelpsineducatingmembersofthe
communityoftheimportanceofhealthyeating.Ingeneral,thisprojecttargetsthose
livinginapartmentblocksandrentalhousing,providingthemwithaneasilymanageable
andtransportablegarden.

Inadditionweaimtotargetlocalyouthhomelessorganisations,soastoprovidefood
fordisenfranchisedyouthlivingintransitionalhousing,astheyoftendonothavethe
moneyorresourcesnecessarytoattaintheirownhealthyfood.Ontopofthatthese
youthsarealsoatriskofhealthdeficienciesduetotheirlimiteddiet,thusbyhelping
themmanagetheirowngarden,webelievewewillbeabletohelpthemimprovetheir
dietsgreatly.Intheeventthatwearenotabletocontactanyyouthhomelessness
organisationwewillthentargetalocalprimaryorsecondaryschool.
