Dear the National Association for Woman,

I am applying for a grant for a project that will identify any correlation between family
composition and attitude towards traditional gender roles. I will be gathering statistics from a set of
volunteers as to which members of the family work outside of the home, and which are responsible for
domestic chores. I also ask about how the family is made up. Then, I will compare that data to a score
that the volunteers received after taking an online Implicit Association test on traditional gender roles.
This project may reveal some factors that cause either subconscious or conscious sexism. If we are more
aware of what causes sexism, then we could better prevent the spread of sexism.
Sexism is a horrible thing. According to the US National Library of Medicine and the National
Institutes of Health it can have many negative effects on its victim, such as; feeling tense or keyed up,
nervousness or shakiness inside, feeling restless, feeling fearful, suddenly being scared for no reason,
spells of terror or panic, feeling lonely, feeling blue, feeling no interest in things, feeling hopeless about
the future, feelings of worthlessness and even thoughts of ending life. According to Penn State
University, sexism affects women both in the workplace as well as in academic settings. In a report, the
American Association of University Women argued that: schools were more focused on educating boys
than girls; materials utilized in schools were more male-oriented; and girls were discouraged from taking
advanced classes that would lead to significant economic mobility. These are all negative effects of
sexism, and by finding out if/how the family causes sexism, we can help stop sexism at a base level and
kill it at its roots.
To find out how sexism is influenced by family, I will have my participants take two tests in
order to collect the data. One of the tests will be about their family makeup: a family composition test.
The other test will be on how inherently sexist they are: a gender implicit association test (GIA). If the
volunteers score high on the family composition test, this means that women are more dominant in the
family than men. If they score high on the GIA test, then they associate career roles with men and family
roles with woman. I hypothesize that there will be a negative correlation between these two tests. If one
scores higher on the family composition test, and thus has a more female dominated family, they will
not associate career roles with men as much as someone with a male dominated family. I dont need
many materials strictly for my experiment. I need a laptop, which will be used to access these tests and
hold my data. I also need these two tests, which will allow me to collect my results. I also need test
subjects, which will take the tests and allow me to get results. My procedure will be to first have my
participant take the family composition test. Then, with me in the room, they will take the GIA test, and
I will record the results of both of these tests.
This is my budget:
Item Quantity Cost Total

Apple MacBook Air 1 $949.00 $949.00

License for online 1 $20 $969.00

test

Room to test in 1 $105.00 $1,074.00

Money to gather 100 $500.00 $1,574.00

volunteers

Food and water for 1 $250.00 $1,824.00

one month

Transportation 1 (month pass) $25.00 $1,849.00

Apple MacBook Air $949.00
This is based on Apples (the company that makes this computer) website. This is a student discount, as the normal computer costs $999.00

License for online test $20.00

Based on my estimates for the resources needed to create the test.

Room to test in $105.00

I will need a room to test in so my participants do not get distracted. This estimate is based Regus claims I could rent a conference room for a
month 103 dollars.

Money to gather volunteers. $500.00

I will need to spend at the most five dollars on each volunteer. This cost could range from buying a drink, to facilitating their transportation.

Food and water for one month $250.00

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, $219 is needed to be spent on food per month. Since my studies will take up all of my time, and
I will have no other source of income, I need this money to survive.

Transportation $25.00
According to the Prague Public transport website, I could buy a pass for 550 kc, which is equivalent to 23 USD. There is great public
transportation around the city, so that is all I need.

Thank you for your time,
