$100K goal
MCF matching grant
adds $50K

It took 17 months, but
the Verona Public Library
met its $100,000 endow-
ment goal in April.
And that meant the next
$50,000 came a lot more
quickly, as the $100,000
triggered a challenge grant
from the Madison Com-
munity Foundation.
The fund will ensure
the library can offer and
expand programming
and innovative learning
opportunities such as per-
formances, lectures and
traveling exhibits like the
25-foot-tall dinosaur skel-

up being easier than she

(last year), Jordan said. But I think
we put on terrific Hometown Days.
Specifically, Jordan said the Thurs-
day night music last year attracted a
large crowd, which solved a prob-

2017 Prom Court

Verona Area High School students held their prom Sat-
urday, April 29, at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison
with a Masquerade theme.
For the first time, the schools prom court was gen-
der-neutral, a change voted on by the junior class after
the Verona Area school board approved rules regarding
transgender students last fall. An upcoming committee
will review the VAHS policies and procedures for Home-
coming and Prom courts and make a recommendation to
administrators for future dances.

Litter indicates drunk driving
Every spring, my family and I
perform the Adopt a Highway
service on the road where I live
in the Town of Verona. We have
found unusual items such as sets
of four car tires, car radios and
an auto radiator in years past.
This year, I did the cleanup
on my own, since my kids have
all grown and have moved away.
What I found in this half mile
stretch of road was 60 empty
beer bottles and cans, seven emp-
ty pint alcohol bottles, eight soda
cans and 17 other assorted plastic
bottles and enough other trash to
fill two, 55 gallon garbage bags.
This brings to mind two ques-
tions that we should be asking
ourselves.
If we throw trash, empty beer
and alcohol bottles and cans
along the road, what will our
environment soon look like?
Second and more importantly
how many of the consumers of
all of that alcohol were driving
under the influence?
Scary thought, isnt it?

Wildcats finish third at Morgan

The Verona Area High School boys
golf team finished five strokes behind
Big Eight Conference rival Middleton on
Thursday in the Morgan Stanley Shootout
at UW-Madisons University Ridge Golf
Course.
The Wildcats, who took third overall
with a 326, edged Big Eight rivals Madi-
son Memorial (327) and Sun Prairie (328).
Edgewood won the meet with a 318, and
Middleton was second with a 321. Wauna-
kee (330) and Monona Grove (336) are
other teams at the meet that have posed
challenges to the Wildcats this season.
Coach Jon Rebholz said it was import-
ant to do as well as Verona did with the
course being tough and the weather being
not ideal for golf.
Seeing how these guys are standing up
to those conditions is really encouraging,
he said.
Steven Kellerman led Verona with a 76,
for fifth overall. Garhett Kaegi was next
with an 81, and Will Zunker shot an 83.
Cale Rufenacht finished the scoring with
an 86, and Jack Bates 92 was thrown out.

field team swept all three sprint
relays Friday on the teams

part of all three relay teams,
which scored 30 of the Wild-
cats 94.5 points. Only Jefferson
(131.5) and Kenosha Tremper

Sophomore Andrea Wheaton,
freshman Tamiya Smith, Lichty
and Mitchell won the 4x100
relay in 51.27. The same quartet
posted a time of 1:47.33 on the
4x200 relay.

er, Mason McCormick and Mack Kery-
luk were all selected to the Central Dis-
trict team. All three played on the same
line for the Wildcats last winter.
Those guys definitely produced some
numbers for us, Verona coach Joel Mar-
shall said. Theyre a talent group and
are starting to get recognition from the
larger hockey world out there.
Players across the state are invited
to an open tryout and then the team is
selected by picking out the top players
from Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Mis-
souri and Nebraska. There is another
tryout afterward, in which Central Dis-
trict players can try to get invited to the

Middleton.
He was born July 29,
1934 in Sparta, the son of
Jacob and Gladys Rienks.
Lyle married Patsy Syver-
son on June 25, 1955, and
together they had three
daughters. Together they
enjoyed many summers
camping on their Lake
C a m e l o t p r o p e r t y, a n d
many winters at their home
in The Villages, Fla. He
also loved spending time at
Fort Myers Beach, Fla.
Lyle had a very success-
ful painting career, where
he was a partner who owned
and operated Capitol Deco-
rating of Madison. When
he wasnt hard at work he
enjoyed tending to his flow-
ers and yard, playing cards
and watching Wisconsin
sports with Patsy. He was
also known for his handy-
man skills, which will be
sadly missed by his family
and friends.
Lyle is survived by his
three daughters, Laurie
Rienks, Julie (Mark) Erick-
son and Amy (Larry) Wil-
son; four grandchildren,
Brittany (Joe) Tristano,
or Erickson and Skyler Wil-
son; one great-grandson,
Tryg Erickson; sister, Ann
(Howard) Nordstrom; and
two brothers-in-law, Jim
(Patti) Syverson and Jerry
(JJ) Syverson.
He was preceded in death
by his wife of 61 years,
Patsy; his parents; and his
in-laws, Chester and Mar-
gie Syverson.
A Memorial Service will
be held at 11a.m. on Sat-
urday, May 6, 2017, at St.
James Evangelical Luther-
an Church, 427 S. Main St.,
Verona, with Pastor Kurt
