Kindergarten News

Hello Parents,

We are sad to see April go. This month was full of many celebrations, such as Easter
and Earth Day. Students learned all about the meaning of new life and all the ways we can
take care of our world. The Passion Play was a great way for students to see the life that
Jesus led and the true meaning of our Lenten season. Through read alouds, videos, and
class discussions, students learned a variety of ways they can take care of our Earth.
Students got a chance to really appreciate all the world has to offer through our Earth
Day nature walk. In math, we learned all about probability words, how to represent
numbers 1-20, and we revisited patterning. We also tackled subidizing numbers on a dice,
using fingers, and on a ten frame. In language, students focused on letter sounds, new
sight words, and word families. Students also took part in the ongoing journal writing and
guided reading. We have focused on the letters S and T. Students have also become
familiar with vowels and the role of the pushy e when reading. Check out our class
website, www.kindieexplorers111.weebly.com, where you get to see the childrens current
discoveries.

Curriculum Highlights:
April showers, bring May flowers! We are kicking off our community helpers inquiry.
Students will use inferencing skills to guess community helpers by their clothes, tools, and
role. This will also connect with Catholic Education Week, and the theme of walking
forward together with hope. Students will be asked what they want to be when they grow
up. This month in math, we will continue to focus on number sense; for Jks printing,
counting and 1:1 correspondence for numbers 1-10, and for SKs counting 1-50, and
representing 1-20 in a variety of ways. We will also finish up our focus on patterning
concepts and revisit data management concepts. In language, we will continue to focus on
letter sounds, new sight words, word families, proper sentence writing, and guided reading.
We will also like to further develop students fine motor skills and printing skills.
This months virtue is Acceptance. God wants us to make friends with everyone no
matter how different they may look or act. This will allow students to take a look at their
peers and see that God made everyone differently, but we love them the same. This
concept will be further taught in the classroom through read-alouds and real life classroom
experiences.
Odds and Ends:

Read, Read, Read! We are encouraging students to read as much as possible. This
can mean reading with a parent or reading independently. Students are also encouraged to
read the leveled reading books in our class library and read the class poems posted on the
website.

We are encouraging all students to work on their writing skills. SK students are
encouraged to extend simple sentences and work on proper printing skills. JK students are
encouraged to work on their name, letters, simple sentences, and fine motor skills.
