Geometry Assignment: What Does the Volume of a Sphere Have to do with
the Volume of a Pyramid?
A sphere has a radius r. Imagine gluing triangular tiles to the surface of the
sphere so that its entire surface is covered. Then think of each triangle as
the base of a thin triangular pyramid with its apex at the center of the
sphere. The height of each pyramid would extend from a point on the sphere
to the center of the circle. What is the measure of the height of each
pyramid?
Students will construct a sphere using triangular or square pyramids.
