Selected CMD Summer 2017

Program Participants Met for
the First Time
LONG BEACH - On Saturday April 29, the
California-Mexico Studies Center (CMSC)
successfully convened the first program orientation
where all 34 selected and confirmed participants of
the Summer 2017 California-Mexico Dreamers
Study Abroad Program came together for the first
time.

Also present at the orientation were Dr. Ana Mara

Jaramillo, coordinator of the Department of
Population Studies at El Colegio de la Frontera
Norte (COLEF), and COLEF students who visited
from Mexico to personally meet the delegation
of Dreamers that will be participating in the CMD
Summer 2017 program.

As you may recall from previous newsletters, the

CMD Summer 2017 program is the first of our
#DreamersStudyAbroad programs that will take
place at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (COLEF)
on their campus in Tijuana, Baja California from
August 1 to Aug. 21, 2017.

Moreover, the CMD Summer 2017 delegation of

Dreamers is our most diverse to date in terms of
demographics, as it includes 24 Dreamers
from California, 3 from New York, 2 from Wyoming,
and 1 from Washington, Colorado, Wisconsin,
Utah, and Arizona who represent 23 different
colleges and universities across the United States.

Amazingly, 29 out of the 34 program participants

are women, which is a gender pattern we celebrate
and continue to see on all of our Dreamers Study
Abroad programs. Undoubtedly, women are proven
to be more courageous and willing to advance their
profesional and personal lives.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Launching of the Winter
2017 California-Mexico
Dreamers Study Abroad Program
The California-Mexico Studies Center (CMSC) is
pleased to announce that we are
currently accepting applications from DACA
recipients to participate in our Winter 2017
California-Mexico Dreamers Study Abroad
Program, which will take place in the Mexico City-
Cuernavaca area from Dec. 22, 2017 to Jan. 14,
2018.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: During the 3-week
travel-study experience, the participating Dreamers
will immerse into a comprehensive language and
cultural educational program at the Centro
Tlahuica de Lenguas e Intercambio Cultural
(CETLALIC) Institute; which will consist of
historical, cultural, linguistic, and academic
"ctedras" on social movements, the Mexican
educational, economic and political systems,
various museum and archeological visits, and also
a home-stay living experience with Mexican host
families while attending CETLALIC.
Also, participating Dreamers will have the
opportunity to conduct independent travel and
ethnographic research on their family origins,
which will allow Dreamers to visit their birthplace
during the Christmas-New Years break, and
produce a 10-page ethnographic-research paper
based on their findings.

Dreamers living anywhere in the continental

U.S. are welcome to apply. Moreover, we
encourage Dreamers from other countries than
Mexico to apply as well, as long as they are fluent
Spanish-speakers, given that the entire program
will be taught in Spanish.

Dreamers' Campaign for INE

Credential Registration
A CALL FOR ALL DREAMERS AND
IMMIGRANTS OF MEXICAN-ORIGIN TO OBTAIN
AN INE I.D. CARD

Are you an immigrant of Mexican-origin

currently living in the United States? Did you
know that you can get an INE Voting I.D.
for FREE?

An INE Credential is the most widely used form of

identification in Mexico, and it also allows Mexican
citizens living abroad to vote in the presidential
elections in Mexico.

The California-Mexico Studies Center (CMSC) and

the California-Mexico Dreamers' Network (CMDNet)
are launching the Dreamers' Campaign for INE
Voting I.D. Registration, in an effort to help
Mexican-born Dreamers and their families obtain an
INE Voting I.D. (Credencial de Elector) as a civic
education and engagement project, and to promote
voting rights of all Mexicans living in the U.S. to
increase their participation in Mexico's 2018
Presidential and Mexico City's Jefe de Gobierno.

Help us spread the word by sharing our campaign

flyers and the following instructions manual so that
more Mexican citizens living in the U.S. can register
for an INE I.D. card and vote in the upcoming
presidential elections in Mexico.
