126.7 Technology Applications, Kindergarten-Grade 2, Beginning with School Year 2012-

2013.

(a) Introduction.
(b) Knowledge and skills.

Lesson Description:
Students will know that there are 50 different states that make up the United States of America,
and that each state has its own capital. Students will understand how to work collaboratively
using Google Slides, and will perform their own research to find interesting facts about each
state, including the significance of major cities in each state.
Timeline:
Day 1 The teacher will introduce the students to the proposed project by
giving a previous school year students examples on a projector
through slides presentation. The teacher will present the first 10 states
and will emphasize the importance of capital being one bullet point, as
well as the reason for the cities being located where they are (Major
cities). The students will be assigned groups by the teacher at random.
Day 2 The students will create an outline on paper of how their Google
slides presentation will look, also any key information can be
expressed on this outline.
Day 3 The groups will create an introduction slide that each group member
will agree on, and students will distribute among themselves 17, 17,
and 16 states to take care of independently at this point in the project
(Group of 3)
Day 4 The students will put all of their slides together into 1 slideshow
presentation in Alphabetical order. The teacher will be responsible for
guiding the students with any technical questions regarding how to
create the slides.
Day 5 The students will present their Google Slides presentation to the class
and each student that is not presenting is responsible for filling out a
critique of the groups presentation. The students that present will be
responsible for evaluating other members of the group in terms of
effort and collaboration.

DECIDE PHASE
Teacher Role:
The teacher will show the class a YouTube video called Fifty Nifty United States performed by
Schoolhouse rock, as this will give the students a catchy song with basic information about the
13 original states, as well as the rest of the states thereafter. Being able to associate a song with
the learning process can be helpful in solidifying the information.
After this video is complete, the students will be able to associate any commonality they may
have with particular states, and will be able to make the distribution of states to make slides on
easier among groups. The teacher will now use a random method of assigning 3 students to each
group, for a total of 8 groups as there are 24 total students.

Student Role:
The students will decide which states they want to learn more about as well as make slides about,
and at this point two of the students will research 17 states, while the third student in the group
will research 16 states.
The students will use any search engine to find graphics and information from sites other than
Wikipedia to gather information for their slides. The students will also dig deeper to discover
interesting facts, as well as the purpose of major cities location. Students can continue to
collaborate at home with Google docs, as it is a live document that can be edited at any time.
DESIGN PHASE
Teacher Role:
The teacher will continue to demonstrate different examples of previous students slide
presentations in order to fill in any gaps that the students may have on how the project is to be
designed. The teacher will hand each group a rubric in order for them to know what to expect
and what to fulfill to make the best grade possible. The teacher will provide the groups with
constructive feedback and templates to better assist in the design.
Student Role:
The students will work independently on the assigned number of states. The students will then
work together to combine all of the slides into one presentation. Students will refer to the rubric
as a guide to completion.
DEVELOP PHASE
Teacher Role:
The teacher will be around to help with any technical issues with formatting on Google Slides, as
well as putting all of the slides together smoothly. The teacher will be able to provide
constructive feedback at this point
Student Role:
The students will add finishing touches to the Google Slides presentation including but not
limited to GIFs, Audio, pictures , and even links to YouTube videos (Educational Only). The
student will now be able to present to the class.
EVALUATE PHASE
Teacher Role:
The teacher will help the students understand how to read and understand the assessment rubric.
The teacher will then assess each students participation and quality in constructing their share of
slides. The teacher will use the rubric and checklist to assess the students.
Student Role:
The student will complete the rubrics and provide any constructive criticism for their peers, as
well as their own group members depending on quality of work.
