by Alberto C. de Veyra III (Health Coordinator) and Miracle Anne Carlos (Health
Officer)

Food for the Hungry Philippines (FHP)

Unit 1401 Dasma Corporate Center
# 321 Dasmarias St., Binondo Manila

I. Problem Statement

Flovi Homes Village of Barangay Tonsuya in Malabon City has a population

of about 9,260 with 1,852 households. Most of the houses in the said
village are congested and made up of light materials. The community has
poor sanitation as evidenced by improper solid waste disposal with no
garbage bins available. This kind of environment may lead to various
illnesses especially among children (e.g. skin diseases, diarrhea and other
water-borne diseases) and lasting effect from having unhealthy lifestyle.

Last March 8-10, 2017, the FHP Health team conducted community
mapping and interviewed 330 respondents (households with 0-18 years
old members) wherein 98% expressed that their main health concern is
improper solid waste disposal. Holistic Community Assessment (HCA)
conducted by FHP staff also revealed that sanitation is among their major
health concerns.

II. Objective
To improve the health environment of Flovi Homes residents through
dissemination of key health messages and provision of garbage bins.

III. How This Project Will Benefit My Community

FHP will use its main strategy, the Cascade Group Model in
disseminating key health messages as behaviour change communication.
FHP will form 3 Cascade Groups within the area. Each Cascade Group will
be composed of 10 Cascade Group Volunteers (CGVs) who are selected by
the community members themselves. These CGVs will receive training on
different health modules through FHP Health Field Officer and Health
Coordinator. The training on health identified modules is once every 2
weeks. For this specific intervention, health module on WASH or Water,
Sanitation & Hygiene will be tackled to the CGVs. Each CGV is then
assigned to a Neighbourhood Circle group which is composed of 10
households or Neighbour Circle Members (NCMs) geographically close to
one another for which they will be responsible to share the health, hygiene
and sanitation messages that they have learned during their training. The
CGVs will share the key messages they have learned to their assigned
Neighbourhood Circles either in small group meetings or through
household visits using flipcharts as visual aid. Each CGV will be equipped
with flipchart for each module they received training on.
Garbage bins will also be provided and made readily available for the
residents to use in properly disposing their waste. For every 20 households,
3 garbage bins will be provided to ensure proper segregation of
biodegradable, non-biodegradable and recyclable solid wastes. FHP will
work with the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Tonsuya for the
collection of garbage. FHP will also tap the Barangay Sanitary Inspector to
provide training on proper waste segregation and disposal to the residents
of Flovi Homes Village. CGVs will also help in monitoring and maintenance
of garbage bins.
