UALLInternationalNetworkReport

1.0 Initial Meeting

2.0 The International Network met for its first time at the Annual Network

Conference held in London in July 2015 A key task was to discuss the remit

of such a network.

3.0 It was generally agreed that the network should look beyond international

recruitment of students and consider concepts such as internationalisation in

the context of part-time study, mature access and lifelong learning in a global

level.

4.0 The role of fostering an international approach to the work of UALL is a key

overarching task which might involve:

-Integrating the theme of internationalisation into the existing UALL calendar of

annual events

-Strengthening the international section of the annual conference by , for

example, hosting a key note lecture; seeking papers with an international

theme; delivering an internationally focused workshop ; supporting an

international panel discussion and holding a network meeting.

-Introduction of an international category for the UALL prizes

-Support long standing and more mature networks to have international

relevance, for example the research, WP, and student and staff networks

1
5.0 The following is the list of potential topics/activities that the group identified,

further work needs to be undertaken to prioritise and create a work plan if members

intend to meet outside the AGM, conference and network seminars.

To have a view on ethical issues around internationalisation; the recruitment

of students from developing world countries, the inclusion of international

students in the UK immigrant category/status, impact of the PREVENT

agenda, visa issues and in some instances a poor student experience can all

be problematic

Opportunities for creating new knowledge through research and knowledge

transfer activities with which members are engaged

Identifying opportunities for collaborative learning through the international

lifelong learning networks with which UALL are involved e.g. UPCEA, EUCEN

Promoting ourselves and student/staff as global citizenship

Learning from policies and practices in other communities nationally and

globally that include diaspora communities

Establish collaborative activities

Seek funding for collaborations, research and activities

Offer opportunities to share best practice development around cultural

competencies for staff, this could include workshops at the annual conference

Form relationships with international quangos/networks OECD, Fiends of

Europe, British Council, DfID and Oxfam etc

Develop an understanding if the implications and impact of Europe Horizon

2020

Broker partnerships to bid for activity funding and transnational learning

opportunities
2
Consider internationalism that sees the sale of the HE products

Building complementary social relationships

6.0 Future Meetings: proposals were made for the group to meet and the

AGM/ Seminar in November and during the Oxford Conference. It was felt

these times would likely attract interest in the first instance.
