from a magazine). Cut the person out & brainstorm how
you can create a drawing that combines the two so that
they interact with each other. BE CREATIVE! ADD FULL

Sketchbook 2 - Grid Journal:
Read MilliAndes What is Grid Journaling article
(ww.milliande.com/what-is-gridjournaling.html), watch her
video, and view her examples. Choose a building with
unique architecture to explore (best to be physically
present, but if you cannot then find several reference
pictures to work from). In NONE of the grids will you draw
the whole structure, you will focus on smaller sections.
Following her instructions draw your first box and one
detail from the architecture. Next choose another detail to
draw, make sure to draw the box to fit the detail. All the
boxes should be different sizes. Continue to draw until you
have between 7-10 boxes on one page. Medium: Pen &

Chair Still Life
Criteria:
Fill your whole page
Used proper drawing technique (gesture-contour-value)
Chair has proper proportions and doesn't look skewed
Attention was given to details
A wide range of values can be seen (color or gray scale)
Evidence that time and care were given to the composition
Original composition
good craftsmanship
Sketchbook 4 - Positive & Negative Space
For this sketchbook, you will need to observe what you are drawing. Arrange
a still life, find some plants/trees, or ask a friend to pose for you. However,
instead of drawing the main object, you will be drawing the negative
space around it.

Look at the area around your object. Draw it in as much detail as

possible. Don't just scribble to fill it in - draw what you see. This drawing
should fill the page.
Sketchbook 5
Artist Research & Response
For this assignment, you will research an artist and
create a work of art inspired by that artist.

On one page of your sketchbook, write the artists'

name in a style inspired by their work. Add two
printed images of the artists' work, or re-create two of
their works by drawing or painting in your
sketchbook. Fill the extra space with quotes from the
artist and information about the artist (at least 5
quotes or pieces of information).

On another page, create a sketch inspired by the

artist. You may use paint, pencil, or mixed
media. This should be a finished composition that fills
the page. You are free to choose how you interpret
and are inspired by their work, but the composition
should be creative and unique.
Sketchbook 6 - Literature Response
You have two options for this sketchbook. You may EITHER go abstract and
non-representation OR you may go illustrative.

Your assignment is to read a poem, short story, section of a book, or other

form of literature and then EITHER illustrate how it makes you feel OR
illustrate a scene or character from the reading. Use value, color, line,
texture, and other elements of art to communicate your meaning. You may
use mixed media. Your work should fill the page. Spend some time on this
sketchbook - do not try to rush it. Even if your work is abstract, I still expect a
well-thought-out composition. Somewhere on the page (or on the front or
back), provide the title of the poem or work of literature and the author.

Sketchbook 10
Found Poetry
For this sketchbook assignment, you will remove pages from discarded books
and use them to create "found poetry". Select several pages from the
provided books (or use your own). Look for words that can create a
poem. Arrange the pages in your sketchbook and attach them with a thin
layer of glue. When the glue has dried, use a medium of your choice to
outline the words and illustrate your poem on the remaining area of the
pages.

Requirements

Must be mixed-media. Add in some form of material besides paper and

pen/pencil/marker. This can mean paint, found objects, a layered
collage, or anything else you find inspiring. It can also mean
manipulating the book pages by tearing, cutting, etc.
Must show a legible poem.
Book pages cannot be from a book of poetry, song lyrics, or anything
else that is already artistically arranged.
Must involve some detailed illustration, either through line, color, or
shape.

Art, Advertisement & Propaganda - Short
Response
In order to prepare for our next unit, which will explore ideas of art,
advertisement, and propaganda in depth, each student must write a short
response to one of the following popular culture images. Be prepared to
discuss this in class.

Main Discussion Question: Aside from the obvious (e.g. "this is a picture of
Donald Trump sitting on a chair"), what is this image trying to say?

Points to consider

Lighting (Where is the light shining? Where are the shadows? Is it bright
or dark? Why?)
Relationship of subject and viewer (Are they above the viewer, below
the viewer, or at eye level? What does this communicate?)
Facial expression and eye contact (What does their facial expression
say? Are they making eye contact with the viewer? Try covering up
parts of the face to see the expression of just the eyes and just the
mouth.)
Pose (What pose is the subject in? What does that pose communicate?
Does it remind you of anything?)
Color (What's the overall color scheme? Have the colors been
manipulated? Were they chosen to evoke certain emotions?)
Editing/Airbrushing (Can you tell if any editing has been done? Does the
subject look older, younger, or the same as they do in other images?)

Consider all the above questions, and make note of anything that stands out
to you. Try to formulate an idea of what the image is trying to tell you, make
you feel, or make you believe. Do you think the photographer or magazine
supports or doesn't support this person? This is an opinion-based
assignment, there are no wrong answers! Write at least 5 sentences (you
can write it in list form) and be prepared to discuss your ideas in class. This
assignment will be a participation grade.

Drawing Sound
For your first sketchbook, your assignment is to fill a two-page spread with
abstract drawings that depict sound.
Requirements

At least one drawing must include color - you may use paint, marker,
colored pencil, pens, crayons, or any other medium.
It must fill two side-by-side pages of your sketchbook.
Drawings must be abstract or non-representational. They should not
look like any recognizable objects or common symbols (i.e. hearts,
clouds, etc)

Suggestions for finding "soundscapes"

Sit outside and listen to traffic or nature sounds.

Listen to overlapping voices of people in a group.
Listen to your favorite song or soundtrack.
Draw the sound of someone cooking dinner.
Look for "soundscape" tracks on YouTube and draw what they sound
