Example 2. Three straight and differently sloped chute segments

The segments are changing their slope angles as follows:

90/50/40 degrees. Find the exit velocity of the bulk solid
flowing through the three segments.

Data: Q = 1400 t/h flowrate

w = 0.5 wall friction factor
v11 = v0 = 0 m s-1 initial bulk solid velocity
L = 8.7 m total chute length
L1 + L2 + L3 = 2.2 + 4.5 + 2.0 m length of chute segments.

Analysis: Segment No. 1 L1 = 2.2 m Vertical segment ( = 90).

The material velocity on the bend, between the first and the second
segment and before impingement is determined using equation (6.1b).

v12 = v112 + 2gH where H = L1

v12 = 0 + 2 9.81 2.2 v12 = 6.57 m s-1

Segment No. 2 L2 = 4.5 m = 90 + = 40 p = 90

From equation (5.13a) ( p + ) > arctan , then ( p + ) > 35.3 , so

flow takes place. Note: sin 2 50 0.5cos2 50 = 0.38

TRANSFER CHUTES
Principles for calculation and design

The bulk solid area, initial velocity and flow conditions are: (Fig. 5.2)

Ai = 0.4575 / vi vp = 6.75 m s-1 p + = (130 50 ) = 80 > 35.3

Approximation steps: Note: sin 2 80 0.5cos2 80 = 0.955

1st A1 = 0.4575/6.75 = 0.0678

2
v31 = 6.752 0.0678 / 0.0678 0.955 = 43.51 v31 = 6.60

2nd A2 = 0.4575/vi = 0.4575/6.60 = 0.0693

2
v31 = 6.752 0.0678 / 0.0693 0.955 = 42.57 v31 = 6.52

3rd A2 = 0.4575/vi = 0.4575/6.52 = 0.0702

2
v31 = 6.752 0.0678 / 0.0702 0.955 = 42.04 v31 = 6.48 m s-1

Solution: Material velocity at the chute end using equation (6.1a) is

v32 = 6.482 + 2 9.81 2.0(sin 40 0.5cos 40 ) = 52.18
