AUTORREFUTACIN Y DOGMATISMO
D
En Appearance and Reality, sostiene

Afirmaba Bradley: who is ready to prove that metaphysical knowledge is wholly impossible
[] is a brother metaphysician with a rival theory of first principles [] To say that
reality is such that our knowledge cannot reach it, is a claim to know reality; to urge that our
knowledge is of a kind which must fail to transcend appearance, itself implies that
transcendence (1883: 1-2).

Acerca

LA POSICIN DE RUSSELL
7
Starting from a vocabulary derived from perception, and from sentences expressing
judgments of perception, I shall give a definition of an assemblage of significant sentences
defined by their syntactical relation to the initial vocabulary and to judgments of perception.
When this assemblage has been defined, we can consider whether, in an adequate
language, it can contain significant sentences and no others (Russell, 1940: 194).

8
I suggest that variable propositions are only legitimate when they are an abbreviation for
name-variables and relation variables [] Then we may say that every sentence of the
form (p) is true is not a single new sentence, but a conjunction of an infinite number of
sentences, in which the variables are not sentences (Russell, 1940: 199).
9
10
I will observe, however, that empiricism, as a theory of knowledge, is self-refuting []
it must involve some general proposition about the dependence of knowledge upon
experience; and any such proposition, if true must have as a consequence that itself
cannot be known. While, therefore, empiricism may be true, it cannot, if true, be known
to be so (Russell, 1940: 165).

proposiciones empricas puede establecerse ms all de toda duda razonable: Only
judgments of perception, such as this is red together with certain memory judgments,
certain negative judgments, and certain judgments involving propositional attitudes, can
be known beyond any reasonable doubt. Since no universal judgments of any kind are

included in this list, the principle of empiricism can not be thus known. Consequently, if by
known is meant known beyond any doubt then the principle of empiricism does imply
that it can not be known (Benjamin, 1941: 570-571).

estatus y categora lingstica.

As a consequence, the empiricist criterion of meaning, like the result of any other
explication, represents a linguistic proposal which itself is neither true nor false,
but for which adequacy is claimed in two respects: First, in the sense that the
explication provides a reasonably close analysis of the commonly accepted
meaning of the explicandum and this claim implies an empirical assertion;
and secondly in the sense that the explication achieves a rational reconstruction
of the explicandum; i. e., that it provides, together perhaps with other explications,
a general conceptual framework which permits a precise restatement and
theoretical systematization of the contexts in which the explicandum is used.
(Hempel, 1950: 61)
I feel less confident, however, about the possibility of restating the general idea
in the form of precise and general criteria which establish sharp dividing lines
(a) between statements of purely logical and statements of empirical significance,

and (b) between those sentences which do have cognitive significance and those
which do not. (Hempel, 1951: 61)
17
espurias: The ironic course of positivism was, in fact, one of progressive liberalization to
the point where virtually nothing could be denied cognitive meaning by reference to its
criteria of observational control (Scheffler, 1967: 6).

Bergmann seala I discover that I can construct an L which is otherwise satisfactory and
which I can understand after I have interpreted only those of its descriptive predicates
which name what is immediately observable. And, of course, I also discover that this
circumstance is of strategic importance in clarifying many traditional puzzles; which, by
the way, is the only good reason for calling this sort of thing a criterion or principle
(1951: 84).
19
[] in our informal discourse we use these verbs not as they are used in the traditional
puzzles but in their ordinary sense, which does not lead to any perplexity; and we find
that by thus using them in talking about L we can dissolve the perplexities of these
puzzles. There is, as far as I can see, nothing vitiatingly circular in this procedure
(Bergmann, 1951: 85).

Those who raise the question of the reality of the thing world itself have perhaps in mind
not a theoretical question [] but rather a practical question, a matter of a practical
decision concerning the structure of our language. We have to make the choice whether
or not to accept and use the forms of expressions in the framework in question (Carnap,
1950: 86).
