OVERVIEW
Tourism is an important economic generator for the Municipality of Anda. In addition to the obvious revenues generated in recreation, travel,
retail, restaurant and accommodation industries, the economic benefits of tourism are widely distributed throughout a network of
businesses that support these industries with goods and services. Tourists are now drawn to Andas natural beauty and open spaces and
enjoy a variety of recreational activities, access to cultural amenities, and affordable accommodation.
Tourism comprises the activities of persons travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one
consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited
(UN WTO). Tourism development and promotion are among the functions of Local Government Units (LGUs) as mandated by the Local
Government Code of 1991 (RA 7160). As local governments shifted to more participatory forms of development governance, they were also
encouraged to enjoin other stakeholders in local tourism development and promotion.

The National Tourism Act of 2009 (RA 9593) encourages LGUs to ensure they prepare and implement a tourism development plan, enforce
standards and collect statistical data for tourism purposes. Local tourism development plans should integrate zoning, land use,
infrastructure development, the national system of standards for tourism enterprises, heritage and environmental protection. Imperatives in
a manner that encourages sustainable tourism development. The plans should also take into account gender considerations as well as
disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation principles.

Beyond this, the Tourism Act emphasizes that Tourism development is a shared responsibility of both the national and local governments.
Thus, the DOT, DILG and LGUs shall integrate and coordinate local and national plans for tourism development. The role of TPB and the
TIEZA is also vital in that they are mandated to promote and assist LGUs which successfully adopt and implement their tourism development
plans.

ANDA TOURISM
The Municipality of Anda is endowed by nature with beautiful beaches, caves and springs which have been recognized as potential tourist
spots since the early 1980s. All of the beaches in Anda have white sands with very clean and clear, blue water since the town is free from
the industrial pollution as an interior and isolated town in the eastern part of Bohol.
From the beaches of Anda, a motorboat could only travel approximately one and a half (1 1/5) hour to Camiguin Island, a well-known Tourist
Hub in Cagayan, Mindanao. At present, there are several developed resorts in Anda which are located in Barangays of Candabong, Bacong,
Virgen, Poblacion and Badiang. These beaches have earned the reputation of Paradise of the East for the town.

7
The Municipality of Anda has also undeveloped waterfalls to be proud of, the Anda Falls in Casica, Anda, Bohol. Caves also exist in Anda
which are haven of flora and fauna and are also bird sanctuaries. These are as follows: Three-Marias cave, Lamanok Cave, Santiago Cave,
Balwarte Cave, Sarah Cave and Sudlonon Cave and Tanod Caves. However, these caves must undergo strict assessment by the DENR
before they are explored.
Some beautiful sceneries which are equally tranquil and refreshing for the soul to visit just like the other tourist potentials in Anda are the
Blue Heaven overlooking Cogtong Island landscape and Seascape in Katipunan and the Banilad, Tibao Daku and Caturing, springs in
Bacong; Cateres Cave Spring in Candabong and Combento in Virgen, Anda, Bohol.

2016 Visitors
Anda Municipality was visited by 33,647people (overnight and day trips) in 2016 who came for leisure or business purposes, to visit friends
and/ or family or other personal reasons. In a year-over year comparison, person-visits grew 1.3% over 2015. Domestic Tourists are primarily
the main market of Anda meanwhile, top three (3) foreign markets for the year 2016 are from United States of America, Germany and
France.

THE PATHS OF HISTORY
Discover ANDA Beautiful by nature
The Municipality of Anda is located on a small peninsula at the eastern tip of Bohol, 100 kilometers from Tagbilaran City. This place was
once a wilderness; the shores were swampy and covered with thick mangroves and hardwood trees.
During the early part of its civilization up to the later decade of the nineteenth century, this region was a barrio of Guindulman called
Quinale due to the characteristic of land formation of sand, gravel and corals that piled layer after layer amassed by sea waves since time
immemorial. This can be verified geologically by observing the sandy soil of the barrios of Poblacion and Suba.
On March 24, 1874 the petition of barrio Quinale to become a town was denied again for the same reason---the number of taxpayers
could not reach the required 500.
On September 23, 1874, only a few months from being denied, the people made another petition. This time the people took another tact.
Independent Lieutenant (Teniente Absoluto) Victorio Felisarta and thirty-seven (37) other signatories made the following reasoning: Their
1856 petition was denied for lacking the required number of taxpayers. Their 1872 petition was denied for the same reason. The number of
births far exceeded the number of deaths, but the people migrated to other places due to lack of supervision and opportunities.
The reason why the people want to be a town is to have a proper supervision and leadership. Without leadership the number of taxpayers
would not increase, so first make Quinale into a town so that the taxpayers could reach 500 and not the other way around.
Provincial Politio-Military Governor Don Joaquin Bengoechea, understood the reasoning. So the provincial governor suggested, make a
petition only for the civil aspect of the town. The requirement of 500 taxpayers is only for becoming a town. So the September 23, 1874 petition
requested only to be a town in the civil aspect.
The new petition went into rigmarole due to the reluctance of the religious authorities to approve it. On March 11, 1875, the Consejo De
Administracion (Council for Administration) recommended that the visita (mission field) of Quinale be spearated in its civil aspect only because
the Archbishop was not inclined to separate it on its religious aspect.

11
On March 12, 1875, Governor General Don Jose De Malcampoy y Monje issued the decree creating the new town of Anda. On April 1,
1875 the order was published. The archbishop of Manila confirmed the separation was only on the civil aspect of the town.
On May 3, 1875, the local officials of the new town of Anda and the mother town of Guindulman gathered together to determine the
boundaries.
As to the renaming of the town, there is no record yet found as to the authenticity of the. However, according to the explanation by early
inhabitants, the word ANDA is derived from the word ANDAR (to walk) visayanized as naga-andar meaning walking or towards prosperity.
Another version of the naming of this town is that it was derived from the name of a Spanish Governor General, Simon de Anda, whose memory
due to the influence of the Spanish authorities, the towns name was attributed to. Anda led the army of Filipino and Spanish troops to fight
against british invasion. However, the authenticity of either version remains to this date a continuous study and research.
Since the inhabitants of this newly created municipality were wanting of knowledge and a short of proper guidance in performing
governmental functions, the people invited an educated person from Guindulman to serve as an administrator or adviser in running the
machinery of the government. They invited Pablo Castro Sr. to live in Anda to teach and to give advices to the officials of the town regarding
governmental affairs. He got his meager education in Manila. He was sent there by his parents while he was still young.
He was popularly known as Maestro Amboy, Juece Amboy, and Capitan Amboy for serving in various government positions as an adviser,
Juece de Sementera y de Policia, and as a Capitan Municipal. The varied positions were however rendered on different times.
However, the new town was still under the parochial jurisdiction of Guindulman. The Bishop of Cebu (Bohol was yet under the Diocese of
Cebu) did not affirmed that the new municipality be granted a separate parish. He was doubtful that this newly created town could sustain the
needs of an independent parish.
The people through some leaders namely: Perfecto Paguia; Gabriel Escobido, Benedicto Amper among others, continued persistently in
petitioning the Bishop of Cebu that a separate parish should be established in Anda. On March 19, 1885-Anda parish was granted to be
separated from Guindulman assigning Rev. Fr. Julian Cisnero as the first parish priest. On January 6, 1885 the approval from the Spanish
Cortes for a separate civil government of Anda was at hand. So in the year 1885 the people enjoyed a dual celebration-civil and parochial.
In 1898 during the Philippine Revolution, a revolutionary force was organized by Pablo Castro to fight the Spaniards. The Americans
in 1900 invaded Bohol and encountered stiff resistance in the town of Guindulman so they burned down houses and public buildings up to
Anda town. When the people of Anda returned from the mountains where they remained for a year, they found their houses burned down
except for their church, convent and municipal building.

12
THE TOWN EXECUTIVES. (Address of Town Executives was gradually changed from Capitan, to Presidente, then to Mayor).
During the Spanish period, the head of the town was called a gobernadorcillo or capitan municipal. Usually the head was chosen every two
years by drawing of lot whom the Spanish Parish Priest will select from among the prominent persons of the town with sufficient income and
knowledge. Later on during the American regime regular elections were held every three years then increased to four years, then it became six
years then back to three years.. The following became the town executives. (The sequence or order of tenure of office of the early town
executives could not be determined here except the later ones).

THE CLIMATE. Falls under the fourth type characterized by no very pronounced
maximum rain period and no dry season; usually warm and dry along the coasts while
cold and humid in the interior; typhoons are not a frequent occurrence; maximum
precipitation occurs in June to October. Anda is blessed with tropical climate with
generally fair temperature range of between 23-33 degrees cel. (73-91 degrees far.)
Coolest temperature can be felt in January and warmest in May.

The average monthly rainfall in the Municipality of Anda is from 26.1 to 27.7 c. It falls
under the fourth type of climate which is characterized by rains more or less evenly
distributed throughout the year.

Since Anda is located below the typhoon belt. The prevailing winds are the northeast
monsoon from November to February and the southwest Moonsoon from May to
September.

THE NATURAL RESOURCES.

A. MINERAL RESOURCES:
Manganese deposits are present, although its quality and volume is
immeasurable. This metallic mineral located in Barangay Katipunan. Guano is
also available. These organic matters are mostly located at the caves of barangay
Badiang, Talisay, Lundag, and Tanod.
B) MARINE RESOURCES:
Coral formation is potentially available in the coastal barangay of Badiang,
Linawan, Talisay going to the southern parts of the town.
Swamps and mangroves for fishpond development are also available with an
approximate area of 338 hectares. These mangroves are found in barangay
Badiang, Talisay, Linawan and Suba and Portion of Poblacion & Bacong.
Fish sanctuaries are being developed and maintained along the coastal areas of
barangay Linawan, Badiang and Suba.

16
C.) MARINE RESOURCES UTILIZATION: The area is endowed with potentials for fish productions e.g. coral reefs, sea
shells although most of the fisherman use a fishing method such as fishnets, hooks, etc.
Integrated fisheries and aquatic Resources Management Council (IFFARMC) in the barangay level is presently institutional and
organized to help conserve, manage and protect the marine resource.

D.) FRESH WATER RESOURCES: The principal source of drinking water is supplied by Anda water works system managed
and operated by the local government of Anda. The system is sourced by two springs (Cavistil spring and Tinugdan spring) which
supply the covered barangays namely Tawid, Poblacion, Suba, Bacong, Virgen and Candabong. Meanwhile, the hinterland barangays
are now on Level II and III except for Barangay Buenasuerte which primarily depends on the rain collectors as source of water.

THE ENVIRONMENT. The Municipality is generally environmentally free from pollution both marine, air and water. It has food quality
of fresh water spring in the barangay. On the other hand flooding hazard area is remote except in barangay Suba where flooding is
susceptible due to swamps and fishpond location.

There is poor drainage in the Poblacion meanwhile the Solid Waste Management Program is properly implemented in the entire municipality.
However, the absence of Sanitary Landfill is still the major setback of the LGU.

THE TOPOGRAPHY. The northern part of the town consists of mountain ranges with variable valleys gradually diminishing their
height until they reach the town proper. Area that are nearly level are scattered, however, the land along the coast are level lands, ideals for
residential and commercial purposes. Elevation range is from 0 to 300 meters above sea level.

THE SOIL AND DRAINAGE. The plains have two (2) types of soil namely: Batuan Faraon complex and mountain soil
undifferentiated. The types of soil are generally of the upland soil type. PH ranges from 5.5 t 6.5 Batuan-Faraon complex is a combination
of the Batuan soil and Faraon Clay. The presence of haycock hills rising out of the level lands makes it difficult to delineate such areas. All
the soil in the level areas and to Batuan Clay type while those on the hill are the Faraon Clay.
Drainage especially in low area slow and impeded due to the impervious rock beneath the soil which prevents water percolation in Batuan
series. Faraon clay on the otherhand is characterized by a shallow surface soil with little or no sub soil. This clay is usually soft and strongly
penotic when wet, slightly hard when dry.

17
Since the Type of soil present in Anda are all upland type, it is important that attention must be directed in its conservation and technical
know-how in soil management must be employed to keep and hold the soil from further loss. Being highly susceptible to the destructive force
of erosion, by season or its relief, their use must be limited, if not restricted.
Mountain soil occupies 1,130 hectares of land. It is highly susceptible to erosion by reason of its relief, the use must be limited and restricted.
Possibly fruit trees or permanent crops should be planted to this type of soil.

THE GEOLOGY. The municipality has three (3) rock formations-the Sierra Billiones limestone characterized by massive, cavernous
fossiliferous and marly limestone-where sinkhole and channel ways have been developed where must springs have originated. Difficult area
for wells when mar51 and massive limestone are encountered. This is dominant in the hinter land barangays. Another rock formation is the
Jagna andesite characterized as Posphysitic Andesite where saline intrusion may be present in areas near the coast difficult area for wells.
Usually dense in character, hence very difficult for well construction. Springs have low yield and usually dry up in summer months.
This is dominant in barangays of Talisay and Linawan. The third rock formation is the Quarternory aluminum. It is generally mud silt, sand and
gravel along coastal areas channels, flood plains and inner reaches of river system including raised coral reefs. This is common in areas in
Poblacion, Bacong, Virgen, and Candabong along the coast.

THE PRODUCTION AREA.

AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION:
A) CROPS- Anda is basically classified as an agricultural town. The total land area cultivated for
agricultural purposes is about 4,906 hectares. This area is broken down as follows:
1) Corn land 1,978 ha.
2) Coconut 1,910 ha.
3) Banana 520 ha.
4)Irrigated Rice 50 ha.
5)Non- Irrigated 65 ha.

However, the total crops production of the municipality is not enough of the requirement of the population
due to low production.

18
B) LIVESTOCK-Another source of income aside from land cultivation is livestock and poultry raising. Domesticated animals raised in
the municipality are as follows:
1) Swine
2) Cattle
3) Carabao
4) Goat
5) Poultry

C) AGROFORESTRY- The land designated as forestland is divided and decreased due to Wanton and Indiscriminate use of
inhabitants. However, a continuing effort to address this concern is being undertaken by the LGU and BLGUs of Anda.

D) FISHING- Fishing activity is very marginal with only more or less 200 fishermen with use of fishing net and hooks.
E) MANUFACTURING AND MAJOR INDUSTRIES- Anda being 5th class municipality has limited manufacturing activity. The
small cottage industry which includes mat and basket weaving in the northern part and hinterland barangays. Furniture making in
Poblacion and Sta. Cruz is also noted. Welding shops are also found in barangay Bacong and Suba. There are three (3) rice and corn
mills located at Poblacion, Bacong and Virgen.

THE INCOME. The major sources of income is Agriculture (that includes farming with corn, rice, banana, coconut and root crops as
staple crops and fishing) and Tourism. In the coastal barangays, some are engaged in small businesses (sari-sari store) others are
employed both in government and private sector like in beach resorts.

19
How Anda b2ecame a Parish Source: Rev. Fr. Jonathan D. Pacudan,
J.C.L
The process which Anda underwent in becoming a parish was long and tedious indeed. It must be
remembered that as early as January 5, 1875, the people of Quinale already petitioned not only for an
independent town but a separate parish as well. However, this latter spiritual emancipation was not
granted. But the Andahanons, inspired by their new as a town, never stopped dreaming.
1. THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNORS INTERVENTION.
Eight years after the town was established, the formal documentary process petitioning Andas
canonical erection began. The local principalia (aristocracy) of Anda sought the intervention of the
governor of the province of Bohol. On February 28, 1883, Francisco Agusto Linares y Pombo, the Spanish
politico-military governor of Bohol (February 1883 to December 10, 1889) wrote a letter to the Political-
Military Governor of the Visayas, asking for the spiritual emancipation of Anda from its mother-parish of
Guindulman, in the same way that it was granted temporal independence on March 12, 187540. The said
letter somehow gives us a historical peek of Andas profile at that time.
(a) The town of Anda had 623 tributos. As a unit of children. Somehow, it was equivalent to todays
household. But originally, a tribute was equivalent to three (3) persons. Hence, the least population of
Anda in 1883 was only 1869. Today, Andas population has reached 14,696 (according to the CBRMS
2004 Survey) in a total of 3,388 households42.
A Tributo could also mean the tax or contribution that every household or inhabitant had to pay
each year. Anyone unmarried paid one-half tribute. At the start, a tribute was equivalent to eight reales (or one peso), payable in money or in
kind. In 1851, it was increased to twelve reales (or one peso and a half). It must be remembered that if Maestro Amboy got paid 10 pesos
a month, then 1 peso tribute was equivalent to a teachers salary for three days work.
The tribute system was however abolished in 1884, and was replaced by the cedula tax 44. Hence, when Anda became a parish in
1885, the tribute system was no longer in force.

All four structures were described as made of pampango wall and nipa roof (tabique pampanggo y
techno di nipa)46. The so-called tabique pampango referred to walls constructed between giant tree-trunk
posts called harigues or haligues. These walls were constructed by panels of woven bamboo or wooden strips
finished with a coating of mortar, which was a mixture of sand, water and lime that became hard like stone.
The tabique pampango is equivalent to the wattle and daub in European architectural parlance. It was thin
but practical, and popular in places where there was not enough stone, manpower and financing. In the
Philippines, the technique was called such, implying that the technology must have been first introduced in
Pampanga47. Nipa, on the other hand, was and is still abundant in the locality.

Certainly, the church and parish convent refers to the letter were not the ones we have today. In, fact
the governors letter made mention that the people of Anda have already gathered materials for the
construction of another church which they wanted to be bigger and stronger, which the folks had promised to
build immediately.

(c)The parish priest of Guindulman, Fr. Lorenzo Hernandez (1877-1897), was so desirous in
supporting the petition due to difficulty in attending to the spiritual administration of Anda. The distance was
a major factor. Anda was described as 14kilometers from Guindulman, and 25kilometers from Candijay,
making it difficult for the parish priest of both towns to render spiritual assistance to its inhabitants.

(d) Anda was already known for its beauty because aside for mentioning the place as having a considerable population, the governor
went on the described it as having an ideal topographical position and other beautiful circumstances that embellished it.
2. THE INVESTIGATION CONDUCTED BY THE BISHOP OF CEBU.
Bohol was then under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Diocese of Cebu, created by Pope Clement VIII in 1595. Cebu was a
suffragan of the archdiocese of Manila. Its scope was so vast as to include the whole of Visayas and Northern Mindanao, even as far as the
Marianas Islands, including Guam.

Having received the letter from Governor Linares, the Political Military Governor of the Visayas wrote to his Excellency most Rev. Fr.
Benito de Madridejos, OFM, the Bishop of Cebu (1876-1885) on March 12, 1883, asking for his opinion regarding the petition to erect a new
parish in Anda48.

On March 15, 1883, the bishop passed the matter to Don Felipe Redondo, the Fiscal
Ecclesiastical, for his opinion. 49The fiscal ecclesiastical was changed with the public revenues
for the support of the church. Hence, it was his look-out if a parish was truly viable or not, and
his endorsement was crucial especially in obtaining Royal approval for the erection of Parishes.
However, Don Redondo needed more field assessment of the case. Hence, he required that
more consultation be made through the office of the Bishop.

On March 17, 1883, Bishop Madridejos sent an order to conduct a consultation from
parishes nearest Anda, namely, Guindulman and Candijay. Their assessments would serve as
bases for the Fiscals endorsement. In just a matter of one week, Fr. Dionisio Ruego, then
parish priest of Candija, expeditiously sent his reply to the Bishop on March 24, 1883. 51 He
expressed his positive opinion regarding the erection of a new parish in the town of Anda for
two specific reasons, namely, (1) to facilitate the administration of the Holy Sacrifice of the
Mass during feast day, the more frequent preaching of the Holy Word, as well as the reception
of the Holy Sacraments of penance and communion; and (2) to cater to the spiritual advantage of the faithful in the observance of the
precepts of Holy Mother of church.

On the part of the mother-town of Guindulman, it was Fr. Lorenzo Hernandez (1877-1897) who was the parish priest, but it was the
parish priest, but it was Fr. Fidel de Blas, the Provincial Superior of the Augustinian Recollects, based on Manila, who wrote a letter-response
to the Bishop of Cebu on April 11, 1883. 52He likewise expressed his conformity with the unanimous petition of the gobernadorcillo (local
executive) and the principales (local aristocracy) of Anda for the erection of an independent parish. In his letter, he expressed the following:
1. That it was not just a matter of convenience but of necessity that Anda be made an independent parish.
2. That Anda, considering the number of household it had, was ready enough to provide for a decent financial support for the
parish priest, as well as strong solid buildings to accommodate him;
3. That making Anda a separate parish would relieve the parish priest of Guindulman for his difficult duties which he obligingly
discharged;
4. The appointment of a new pastor for Anda would satisfy the spiritual needs of faithful with utmost punctuality.
Having gathered all the needed inquiries, the Bishop of Cebu sent on April 20, 1883 all the pertinent documents for
Ecclesiastical Fiscals perusal, opinion and most of all the much needed
endorsement.53
3. FINAL INSTITUTIONAL ENDORSEMENT
On April 26, 1883, the Ecclesiastical Fiscal, Felipe Redondo, wrote back to Bishop
Madrijejos, specifying the following:54

1. He had considered all the reports from the Parish Priest and leaders of the town of
Candijay, the community of leaders of Guindulman, as well as the opinion of the
Father Provincial of the Recollects Fathers;
2. That despite having to release 623 households for the new parish, still a total of 1400
tributos would remain under the care of the mother-parish of Guindulman;
3. That he supported the evaluation gathered considering that the initiative would be of
great necessity for the better administration and progress of the town of Anda.
4. That he would support the Bishop in his bid of obtaining Royal Approval for the
erection of the new parish of Anda.

23
On April 27, 1883, the Bishop forwarded the petition to the Political Military Governor of Visayas in order to obtain Royal Approval. 55

On May 1, 1883, the Political Military Governor of Visayan Islands transmitted the matter to the Director General of the Civil
Administration, expressing his opinion that the petition be justly consider and attentively granted.56

On July 7, 1883, the Consejo de Administration (Council of Administration) of the Philippines Islands wrote a letter to Joaquin Jovellar,
the Governor General of the Philippines (server from 1883-1885), the supreme Spanish Authority in the country. This Consejo de
Administration was an advisory body, serving as Council of State, assisting the Governor General. Its members consisted of the Archbishop
of Manila, the general second in command in the armed forces, the yntendente general de la hacienda (General Superintendent of the
State) serving as head of the treasury department of the colony, the superiors of the religious orders, and other prominent people serving as
advisers to the Governor General.57

The Consejo was evidently happy that the Royal regulations and institutional formalities had been fulfilled in the over-all process of
consultation. Thus, an overwhelming support was expressed on the basis of the spiritual good of the faithful, claiming that the ultimate
desire of the King of Spain was to make the Catholic religion the principal basis of the good of his governance.58

Therefore, without any doubt, Governor General Joaquin Jovellar, gave his full support and recommendation to the petition in his
official letter No. 596, dated July 12, 1884 to the Ministerio de Ultramar (Ministry of the Overseas) in Spain, asking for the Royal Approval of
his majesty, King Alfonso XII.59

Finally, the Ministry of the Colonies sent back to Governor General Joaquin Jovellar the final approval of the King in an official letter
No. 228 dated January 6, 1885. After having ascertained the compliance of all the laws provided for in the Recopilacion de Leyes de las
Indias (Compilation of the Laws of the Indies), particularly Rule no. 216, Title 6, Book V shich governed all the Spanish colonies, the King of
Spain finally approved the petition endorsed by the Council of State gathered in plenum for the formal erection of the town of Anda as a new
and independent parish. Copies of this letter were transmitted from the office of the Governor General in Manila, dated March 8, 1885 to
the Bishop of Cebu, the Provincial of the Recollects, the Governor of Bohol among others.60

4. FINAL DECREE OF CANONICAL ERECTION OF ANDA AS A PARISH
Owing to his proper authority over his ecclesiastical jurisdiction, Bishop Benito de
Madridejos, OFM finally decreed on March 19, 1885 the formal canonical erection of Anda
as a new independent parish. This Episcopal decree of canonical erection was transmitted
to the Governor General Vice Royal Patron of the Philippine Islands, the general
Superintendent of the estate as well as the Governor of the province of Bohol on March 23,
1885. 61 The said decree declared:
On this date I have decreed the following:
Having been approved by the Royal Order of July 12 [1884] and the concurrent
superior decree of His Most Excellency the Governor General Vice Royal Patron of these
islands regarding the actual creation of a parish in the town of Anda separating it from its
mother-parish of Guindulman in the District of Bohol after investigation of the opportune
petition requested by the interested parties and due to the necessity and convenience for
which the said town is constituted into an independent parish, using the faculties vested
upon us by the Sacred Canons and most especially by the Holy council of Trent in Chapter 4,
Season 21 regarding reform which conforms with the Law No. 4, Title 6, Book 1 of the
Compiled Laws of the Indies, we agree to erect and we canonically erect the town of Anda as
an independent parish with the spiritual jurisdiction separating it fr om its mother-parish of
Guindulman and assigning to this new parish the same boundaries that are followed civilly.

I have the honor to transmit his to Your Excellency for your superior knowledge and
consequent effects.

God be with Your Excellency from Cebu on this 19th day of March, 1885.
Bishop Benito
ANDA PIONEER SPANISH PRIESTS
In every pueblo during the Spanish times, it was the cura parroco (parish priest) who was the real ruler, not the elected
gobernadorcillo. He was the supercisor of local elections, the inspector of the schools, the arbiter of morals, and the censor of books and
stage shows, and even the overseer of the local taxation. While some abusive Spanish friars gave Christianity and religion a bad name,
called the frailocracia or the rule of the friars,62 many of them were real men of God, holy servants of the Church, and loyal legates of
the Spanish crown.

The first parish priest of Anda belonged to the religious congregation called the Augustinian-Recollects of the Recoletos.
The Recollects belong to the many and diverse groups following the rule of community life derived originally from the sermons and
writings of Saint Augustine (354-430). In 256, Pope Alexander IV (Pope from 1254-1261) imposed the Augustinian rule on several religious
communities in central Italy that lacked common rules. From the consolidation of these congregations arose the great order of mendicant
friars called the Augustinian Friars or Augustinian Hermits, now popular called the order of St. Augustine (O.S.A). Augustinian Friars
renounced possessions and lived by the aims they received. However, some Augustinian communities started to neglect the strict
observance of their discipline at times; in consequence, the order was reformed. In 1588, a Portuguese friar at the order introduced a more
severe rule, which included the discarding of shoes. Those congregations accepting this rule was called discalced friars or barefoot
friars. This branch of Augustinian order was made a province in 1602v, and was declared an independent religious Order in 1912. Now,
they are called the order of the Augustinian-Recollects (O.A.R).63
The first missionaries that began their stable work of evangelization in the Philippines were those of the order of St. Augustine. The
Augustinian Fathers, led by Fray Andres de Urdaneta (1508-1568), built their first church in Cebu in 1565, during the first successful
colonialization of the archipelago by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi.64 Following the Augustinians were the Franciscans in 1577, the Jesuits in
1581, the Dominicans in 1587, the Recollects in 1606, and the Benedictines in 1985.65
The Jesuits were the first missionaries to formally the Christianize Bohol in 1985. The Jesuits were members of the Society of Jesus
Founded in 1534 by St. Ignatius of Loyola, and approved by Pope Paul III in 1540. They put up their missions in the twelve (12) towns of
Baclayon, Tagbilaran, Loboc, Loon, Malabojoc (now Maribojoc), Jagna, Inabanga, Talibon, Dauis, Malabago, (now Cortes), Loay and Dimiao.66
However, Charles III, king of Spain (1759-1788), expelled the Jesuits from all the Spanish colonies. The Jesuits devotion to the papacy
called the forth opposition from the nationalistic rulers, and their zeal for ecclesiastical reform antagonized the clergy. In fact, all other
countries in Europe expelled them, and influenced Pope Clement XIV to issue a papal bull to suppress the order in 1773. The Society was
restored internationally in 1814, but the Jesuits returned to the Philippines only in 1859.
So when the Jesuits were expelled from the Philippines in 1768, their territories in Bohol were turned over the Augustinian Recollects.
The number of towns in Bohol increased from 12 during the Jesuit period to 33 under the administration of the recollects; and Anda was
among latter. Because of the Philippine Revolution in 1898 against Spain, the Recollects left their parishes. Early in the 20th century,
particularly in 1902, because of the persistent request from the Boholanos, the Bishops of Cebu sent the Recollects back to Bohol. Thus, the
towns of Anda, Candijay, Clarin.

All in all, there were eighteen (18) Spanish priests in Anda from 1885 to 1937. There is no way to tell if they served in their capacity
as duly appointed parish or not. Their names are here recorded because of the relative length of time they spent in the Parish.

Fr. Julian Cisneros was Andas first Parish Priest who served for more than three (3) years. Fr. Luis Lorente was the last recollect
priest who served for almost three (3) years before the parish was finally turns over to the diocesan priest under the Diocese of Cebu. Fr.
Carlos Ortuoste was the longest serving Spanish Pastor who served Anda for almost ten (10) years.

THE POST HISPANIC PARISH PRIEST UNDER THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CEBU.
In the year 1937, the Augustinian-Recollect Fathers turned over the reins of Anda to the diocesan clergy of the Diocese of Cebu,
under the administration of most Rev. Fr. Gabriel Martelino Reyes, D.D. (bishop of Cebu from 1932-1950). In 1934, the diocese of Cebu
was elevated into an archdiocese; hence Bishop Reyes was made an Archbishop. The following priest served Anda when it still belonged to

While Fr. Heruela was parish priest, the Diocese of Tagbilaran was created into a separate diocese from Cebu. On November 8,
1941, Pope Pius XVII, in his apostolic constitution In sublimi Petri Cathedra, divided the vast archdiocese of Cebu, creating the Diocese of
Tagbilaran and making it a suffragan of the ecclesiastical province of Cebu. The first Bishop was Msgr. Julio R. Rosales (Bishop of Tagbilaran
from 1946-1950) who was appointed only after the end of World War II. Henceforth, Boholano clergy administered the Parish Rev. Fr.
Heruela stayed for two years more to his transitional administration. Ever since the Diocese of Tagbilaran was erected, the following priests
served Anda:

Quick History:
Barangay Almaria was once a Sitio of Barangay Poblacion until in the year 1962 when it was officially declared as a new barangay.

BARANGAY
BACONG
Quick History:
Long time ago, many people lived in a small sitio of Poblacion, Anda, Bohol, called Cambilagan. The sitios
name stemmed from the many plants surrounding the area called bilgan. As time flew, Cambilagan slowly
became congested.

They began to move to a nearby place where plants called Bacong abound. Bacong plant is a family of the
romblon plant, which is usually woven into mats. People began to flock to bacong, so it too became
overpopulated. A big Bacong tree still rests where the present Bacong proper is located. Stories also say
that it was the countrys national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal who gave the name bacong when he was adopted by
the early inhabitants of the area namely: Ata Francisco Isidro Maquinano and his brother Ata Francisco Felix
Maquinano after he was exile in Dapitan in 1885. Rizal was fondly called by the town folks as Amoy. One
day he was asked if he had known what was the name of the plant that was abundant in the area. He told
the inhabitants that the plant was called bacong. However, there are other conflicting versions as to how this
barangay got its name but the former barangay captain Rufino Anuba firmly believed that our national hero
came and visited this place as what his forefathers tales pass onto him.

As years went by, population expanded, people moved to the western part, which becomes its first sitio
called Simangca. This place was dominated by the Simangcas which was later changed into Sitio Dagohoy.
On the eastern side, the second sitio was formed and named Taytayan, but was later renamed to San Roque, in honor of their patron saint, San

90
Roque. The southeastern part of the barangay was called Bangi. The people constructed a chapel for their patron saint, the Virgin of Fatima.
At present this place is now called Fatima.

THE MYSTICAL ISLAND OF LAMANOC
Touted as the Cradle of Andas Civilization, Lamanoc Island displays the beauty of unspoilt nature and
rustic history and culture of early Andahanons. According to the folklore, the name Lamanoc was
derived from the practice of shamans in preparing for their rituals in Lamanoc Cave. They usually
bring native chicken (manok) as the main offering to their gods. This practice still lives on until now.
Though shrouded in mystery and myths the beauty of Lamanok Cove doesn't irk tourists who keep
visiting the place. Whatever the myths, the place remains an idyllic location for sandy beaches and
crystal clear sea and diving haven.

RED HEMATITE ROCK HAND PRINTS

-Lamanok point, Badiang, Anda, Bohol. Some tourists and
archeologists say that this wall exhibits unusual markings that
would probably connote the writing of prehistoric people inhabited in this area. A significant place to visit in Anda, the rock
painting is located in an isolated place and inaccessible except by boat or on foot.
Cave paintings can be found in Lascaux, France and some parts in Spain. In the
Philippines, it can be found in Bohol. The rock hand prints is an evidence of civilization
during the Paleolithic or Stone Age era. The rock painting of Anda is different from the
Lascaux because there were no images of bison, horses and cattle.
However, the art here is abstract were made such attention to detail subtle shading
that they seem to confer a kind of power and dignity giving a pictorial narration by the
ancient Boholanos.

The ancient people here used the so-called red hematite painting (with the use of stones
as tools and blood from animals) to create hand paintings as if giving messages that we
are here. Paint pigments came mostly from minerals. Red was made from an iron oxide called hematite or red ochre. White came
from gypsum or diatomaceous earth. Black was made from charcoal or from manganese oxide. These ground up pigments were
mixed with a binder-water, animal fat, or plant juices- to make them into paint, which was applied to the rock with the fingers or with
brushes made from animal tails.

BUENASUERTE
Quick History:
At the farthest part of Anda, there stood a mountain covered with thick forests where wild animals lived. The place was said to
be the summit of the town whose other side is overlooking the town of Guindulman and Candijay.
Before World War II, only five families inhabited the place. They cultivated some parts of the land and planted different root
crops.
Then World War II came. Many people from the lowlands of different towns fled to this mountain to seek for a hiding place. As
war went on, they temporarily resided there. They cultivated the lands and planted different kinds of root crops. To their surprise,
abundant harvest was made. People were very much pleased and blessed. They cried BUENAS meaning good for at last they were
saved from starvation. Later on, they were informed that at the nearby place, a temporary market was opened. Products from the
mountains were brought down for sale so that people would have the opportunity to sell their extra products, so other would usually say
that they were very lucky or SUERTE. That is why the place is called BUENASUERTE due to abundance and continuous blessings they
had received amidst the difficult times in their lives.
After the war, many people came and settled in the area and decided to spend their whole life there with their families. Time
rolled on and its population steadily increased until it became an independent barangay.
Barangay Buenasuerte was created and declared as independent barangay on April 31, 1967 during Mayor Teodulfo Amoras
administration. Majority of the residents are engaged in farming.

BARANGAY
CANDABONG
Quick History:
Long time ago, there was a couple who lived in the coastline which is now famously named as Bas Daku. They had a beautiful daughter
named Dabong. They got her name from her fair complexion and a transparent throat whereby food that was being eaten could be visibly
seen. Her beauty was known far and wide. Many suitors came to win her heart.

One day, Kang, a fisherman from Tobod, Jagna happened to be fishing along the coast of Bas Dako saw Dabong basking in the white sand.
With her long hair flowing from the waist and her innocent glare, he was instantly captivated.

When he reached the shore, he was still startled by the mesmeric beauty of Dabong. Dabong likewise felt the same as he saw the young
gentleman. Kang greeted the young lady and abruptly expressed his irrefutable feelings. That was the beginning of their love affair.

At last a date was fixed for their wedding. And during the time, it was a custom for a fianc to do menial chores at the fiance's home before
his wedding.

One early evening, Dabongs father requested Kang to go with him to Camiguin Island. Not to disappointment him, he obeyed and took
Dabong to Camiguin Island too. Upon arrival, Kang saw a biyasong (orange-like fruit which was used to brawl beast) and inertly took it in his
pocket. When the father and Dabong came back a newly buried corpse was brought by him and ordered him to ride again.

Not even had gone far, the curse started to fuel up and they fainted. Kang was surprised what happened, but the father asked him if he
took anything in Camiguin and he fiercely ordered Kang to throw away what he took. With great surprise, he abruptly threw it.

98
At last, they reached home and a sumptuous meal was prepared. But that moment, Kang became anxious and want to unveil the mystery of
his fiances family. Because he was frightened that the meals were human flesh, he pretended to have stomach ache in order not to eat.

The following morning, he was about to take a bunch of huge fishes for home. When he decided to use the fishing gears of Dabongs father,
he was outraged what he saw. He discovered organs of men, hands and limbs of a person in enclosed containers near the gears. So he
decided to go back home and became hysterical that and plan a horrifying move.

This is the kind of wife I will have, he said to his parents. A dreadful plan was at hand to kill the family of Dabong. During the wedding
day, instead of rice, pigs, cow and wine to be brought, spears, lances, pointed bolos and shields were packed in sacks and massacred the
helpless family of Dabong. But before Dabong was killed, she cursed the place to be withered.

The late generation called the barrio Kangdabong and now refined into Candabong from the two important persons Kang and Dabong.

Presently, the Barangay is now a fast growing community in Anda due to its potential tourism industry.

CASICA
Quick History:
Many years ago, only few people lived in this place. One house was very far from the others. In a little slope, there lived an old
maiden named FRANCISCA. She lived comfortably alone in her small nipa hut. Five meters away from her hut was a source of
water which was very clear and clean. The people began to widen the surrounding of its source and cleaned the place. They placed
some big flat stones around the surface so that many people can be accommodated. When people from the neighboring places like
Sitio Llawod, some parts of Santa Cruz, Tawid, Suba and even from Poblacion heard about this, they began to climb up to wash their
clothes and used it as source for their drinking water. When someone asked where they had washed their clothes, they often
answered There in Ca-Iscas Water. This name was used by anybody who had visited the place.
Time came when there was a creation of barangays and this place was recommended as one. With the able leadership of Late
Valentin Felicitas, the Teniente del Barrio that time and with the support of the Municipal Council of the town, the place was
recognized and declared as barangay in the name of Casica which was derived from Ca-Icas water.
Majority of the people living in Casica are engaged in fishing and farming.

BARANGAY
KATIPUNAN
Quick History:
Many years ago, a couple of places contentedly nestled in a secluded place on the upper land areas of Anda. These are Abihid and
Tayod. They used to be a sitios of Barangay Casica and were served as hiding place or den of several people especially during World
War II.

On 1967, during the administration of Mayor Teodulfo Amora, people of two sitios unanimously appealed to the Mayor and members
of the Council to join in together and be declared as an independent barangay of Anda. The members of the sangguniang bayan
painstakingly reviewed all resolutions to that matter and Congressman Teodoro Galagar, who that time was a representative for the
3rd District of Bohol personally transmitted all pertinent papers to the Congress and abruptly on 1968, the two sitios in the hinterland
which was merged together, was approved and declared as Barangay Katipunan.
But one of the most interesting stories of this place is the origin of Sitio Abihid. Long time ago, all people living in this place is
hardworking. They toiled so hard in order to survive. Most of the men were engaged in farming while the women were weaving mats,
baskets and other home making products. They were all contentedly doing their daily routine until one day, the sitio experienced an
event that kills a lot of people and destroys so many things-holocausts as what they called. Children and babies were seriously
affected thus, they were quarantined for almost a month and never had a chance to go out. The head of the place was becoming
uneasy and troubled and must find an antidote as early as possible. They enlisted the help of several quack doctors to help them but
unfortunately none of them gave a remedy for the worsen malady. One day, a poor boy appeared and ran towards him. He gave
bundle of leaves to the leader of the sitio and told him that the leaves would be the solution to their problem. Initially, he was doubtful
of what the child has said. So he asked his name. The boy answered Abi. But in an instant, he turned around and the boy vanished
instantly.
The leader started to wonder on how to use those leaves, until it came to his mind to place all leaves in boiling water and give it as an
herbal tea. Fortunately, all patients got well and eventually all of them cured. The people of that place were much grateful to Abi so
they decided to name their place as Abihid.

Presently, Barangay Katipunan continues to work hard to live. Most of the people are engaged in farming.

BARANGAY
LINAWAN
Quick History:
The barangay of Linawan began as a small village five kilometers north of the town of Anda, formerly known as Quinale. It is nestling at the
foot of Kabagni, Manaol and Maanghit mountains with its shoreline facing the sea separating the provinces of Surigao and Leyte.

During the old times marine products were in abundance in this place such as fish, seashells and other marine resources abound the shores
and the swamps. Dynamite fishing was practically unknown to the villagers in those days. The natives would catch fish by primitive methods
yet without much difficulty. This village before and even until now is purely agricultural and as such varied crops like camote, gabi, corn, rice,
ube, cassava, bananas, coconuts, taro and many other root crops are raised the year round.

According to the old folks, the name Linawan comes from the Visayan word linaw which means clear, quiet and peaceful place. However,
during the later part of the Spanish regime, when the villagers inhabitants could no longer endure the abuses and cruelties of the Spanish
authorities in the imposition of the voluntary labor practices, the villagers banded themselves into one solid union and christened their group
Katilingbang Kaliwat ni Maglinti (KKM). As it can be recalled, any villager that time who would fail to report for voluntary service on a given
date for the construction of the adobe churches and other government constructions, would be punished with one cavan of beatings which is
equivalent to 25 whips to the naked buttocks of the absentee. If one would touch to feel that part hit by the whip, the whipping would
repeated all over again.

So, with formation of the Katilingbang Kaliwat ni Maglinti bloody ambuscades were staged against the Guardia Civil every now and then
leaving the scenes of the encounters like lakes of blood. Specifically mentioned as the leader of that resistant movement was a certain
Cabel Paglinawan, an invincible man, with incredible charm and indomitable spirit. Those lakes of blood the called linaw became the
password of the KKM members which later on was adapted as the name of this Barangay of Pagalinawan sa dugo to mean either a lake
of blood or in honor of Cabel Kublan Paglinawan. To this writing, nobody from this generation could trace the whereabouts of this man and
his family.

106
Fronting the seaport of this barangay is an imposing mound of earth called Pulo or PO in short approximately 75 feet above sea level which
is beautifully carved like an inverted vat by an unseen hand of nature to serve as a balcony and/or watchtower for the inhabitants in
welcoming their loved ones who are coming home from their fishing ventures and likewise on beckoning the on-coming sailors from the
different parts of the Visayas and Mindanao who would like to drop their anchor in port to pass their night.

Barangay Linawan was founded on May 2, 1892. Presently, the barangay is composed of three (3) sitios, namely: Mahayahay, Estaca and

LUNDAG
Quick History:
Long time ago, there were settlers from neighboring places wandering farther west to seek better and bigger place for cropping. They
reached a certain place covered with forest and rocky. Higher up from the place where hills of stones and big rocks, the settlers decided
to use the place and sought for the source of water. They surveyed the whole area in the lower part, but they did not see any spring,
until they reached the higher part or the hills of rocks. They found a very big rock like a very huge basin which was full of water. They
were amazingly surprised to see the enormous rock that held water, but soon they began to clean the water by taking away fallen leaves
and twigs, they left it for a couple of days so that all particles above water would sink to the bottom. Days on, the water became clearer
and pristine. The procedure or process they were using means Lugdang in the vernacular, and thus born the name Lundag.

On May 28, 1925, Lundag which was used to be a wilderness and secluded place was declared and recognized as one of the

BARANGAY
POBLACION
Quick History:
During the early part of the civilization up to the later decade of the nineteenth century, this barangay was called Quinale, used to be a
barrio of the adjacent town of Guindulman. This name was derived from the land formation-sand, gravel or corals piled layer after layer
amassed by the seawaves since time immemorial. Immigrants from neighboring places came and settled near the seashore to engage
in farming and fishing.

This barangay is the focal point of the history of this town. This is where the most important events in town happened and history says
it all. When Spaniards came and spread Christianity, Augustinian priests who were assigned in Guidulman wanted to unfold Christian
faith to the natives of Quinale. A temporary convent and church were erected in the barrio, Quinali, called a visita. A visiting priest
came regularly during Sundays and church holidays to officiate masses. The people through the guidance of the Spanish Priests
selected the Seor Santo Nio as their patron.

As the inhabitants increased and progressed, they clamored for an independent civil government and parish separate from
Guindulman. Strong representations for the creation of a new municipality and petitions for a separate parish were sent to the higher
authorities. Finally, on March 12, 1875 the civil government was granted to be separated from the mother town of Guindulman by
virtue of a directive from the Governor General of the Philippines. Pertinent papers were sent to the Spanish Cortes in Spain for
approval. Thus, barrio of Quinale became a separate municipality and renamed in Spanish ANDA, which means that the place is
expanding not only in one area but literally walking and moving to prosperity.

Time has been kind to Anda. From a small village of Quinale it has already evolved into a Municipality of Anda with sixteen barangays
attached. Barangay Poblacion where the seat of local government is located has also progressed and served as a focal point for trade
and development in the town. This is also the place where historical sites and events are sculpted.

SANTO NIO CHURCH

Secondary Patron: San Agustin.

A walk through Andas Parish Church is like strolling

through the relics of time. The church was built on March
19, 1885 and finished on November 17, 1888. The first
Spanish Agustinian Priest is Rev. Fr. Julian Cisnero. One of
the finest murals in the province of Bohol is found at the
ceiling of the Holy Infant Church. This is thetestament of
the masterpieces of Raymundo Francia who painted the mural. Beside is the Holy Infant Academy which
is used to be the Convent of the Agustinian Priests.

112
The church and convento are at the head of an immense open field, at the opposite end of which is a very
inviting beach. Old folks say an earlier church stood to the left of the field as one faces the church, slightly
across the present convento. This must have been the church referred to in Redondos 1886 report: it was
built of tabique walls but materials had been collected for a more spacious temple. Preparations for the
present church were interrupted in 1898; under the direction of Fr. Carlos Ortuoste, the church was
finished in 1926. Parishioners led a vigorous fund drive and also supplied the wood. The women, standing
on benches, applied lime plaster to the walls.
The church plan follows the form of a Latin cross, and is topped by a low four-sided cupola. The
architecture of the exterior is very forthright, with the plain plastered surface enlivened only by doors and
windows (This austerity is an authentic aspect which has been defaced overtime, in so many other
churches. The belltower attached to the front of the church was started in 1950 and completed in 1952. It is built over a portico, a typical
Boholano feature. Portions of the walls at the back were damaged by the earthquake and repaired thereafter.
Its plainness inside pushes the eye upward to the marvelous ceiling murals. These were painted in the 1920s by the Cebuano artist Ray
Francia, who left his signature in a corner above the choirloft. The paintings on tin sheets portray God and His Kingdom, and create a very
tangible illusion of the nearness of Heaven. Though some portions over the northern transept were restored after an earthquake, the ceiling
remains the best preserved of its kind in Bohol.
In the middle of sanctuary is the retablo mayor, with its diminutive image of the parish patron, the Santo Nio, in the central niche; above is
San Agustin, the secondary Patron. On the sides are images of the Sagrado Corazon de Jesus and of the Sagrado Corazon de Maria (left and
right, respectively). The retablo mayor and the retablo in the epistle transept carry all sorts of motifs borrowed from Classical
Greek and Roman sources. The images featured in the epistle transept are (left to right) Nuestra Seora del Carmen, Nuestra Seora de la
Consolacion, and Seor San Jose. The retablo in the gospel transept exhibits a related, but simpler, architectural vocabulary; Featured are
images of San Isidro Labrador, Purisima Concepcion and San Roque.
Keep an eye out for the confessionals, which have Art Deco elements. This style was prevalent in the 1930s; however the same motifs appear on
the belltower adjoining the faade, built some 20 years later.

BELLTOWER. One reaches the belltower from the choirloft. There are two bells, one dated 1892, the other 1924. From here one is afforded
magnificent views of the sea in front and mountains in the back. One also gets a better idea of the peculiar geographic situation of the town,
nestled on a tip of land in between the sea and an estuary.

BARANGAY
STA. CRUZ
Quick History:
The creation of Barangay Sta. Cruz dates back in the year 1969 when this small village was still a component to Barangay Casica. The
villagers clamored for self-government and wanted to have a separate barangay. Through the efforts of old folks, they prepared all the
pertinent papers and transmitted it to their indispensable leader Julian Bernido, who eventually became their first barangay captain.
The late Bernido was determined to pass all the necessary requirements and enlisted the support of the local officials to make a
resolution to declare their place a new barangay. Some people cracked under questioning and plunged him, but it didnt deter him to
win the yes of the local officials as long as he can confide his people. To wrap up the whole thing up, Barangay Sta. Cruz officially
declared and registered as one of the 16 barangays of Anda.
However, there are other conflicting versions as to how this barangay got its name. Some of it refers to the strong and rustic devotion of
the people to Sta. Cruz. They firmly believed that in times of different predicaments that come their way, they can overcome all of
these with the help of their strong faith.
Presently, Barangay Sta. Cruz is situated 2.5 kilometers away from Barangay Poblacion. It has a total land area of 1.79 sq. meters.
Majority of the people are engaged in farming with a huge stretch of irrigated rice fields.
Barangay Sta. Cruz is generally a peaceful place which generally makes it a retirement haven for Balik Andahanons.

SUBA
Quick History:
Barangay Suba was founded by their indomitable teniente del barrio (popularly known now as Barangay Chairman) Ingko Oloy Eulogio
Dagondon on 1888. The name was said to be derived from the flowing water coming from the swampy area to the open sea. Old folks
called it in their native twang suba which brings a lot of fishes of different kinds from the sea. The people were pleased because it
made them easier to catch fish and made it available to their daily consumption.

Barangay Suba has been reputed as Andas Fish Country because majority of the residents are engaged in fishing and other related
fishing activities. Today, that swampy area is now transformed into a huge fish pond that locals could enjoy luscious and fresh tilapia,
bangus, among others.

TANOD
Quick History:
Long time ago, a certain place of Anda which is located at the upper part of the town was known for its tropical forest,
predominantly by huge molave trees, lawaan, bajong, among others. It is also inhabited by different floras and faunas because of
its cool climate and fertile soil.

Before, there were only three families residing in the said area. People from nearby barangays visited only this place just to cut
trees, harvest fruits and vegetables that would somehow depict an eerie environment. According to the old folks, this place was
noted as enchanted place. People were troubled and became less interested to visit this tropical forest. However, some of those
farmers had no choice but to toil hard and keep guarded their plants because many monkeys were spotted in the area. When some
of them wanted to go home, others must remain and continued guarding the place. Those who will come back were assigned to
prepare the meals of his partner and accompany him for several days, which is in our vernacular described as magTANOD. So,
thats how tanod came to be.

Presently, Barangay Tanod has their own elementary school and majority of the people are engaged in farming, copra business,
animal raising and even fishing. Experience the tropical warmth in a very convivial country setting in Barangay Tanod.

TAWID
Quick History
The Barangay Tawid was created in the year 1965 through the effort of the former Mayor Teodulfo Amora. Nestled in the vast plain
approximately 1 kilometer from Poblacion. Bounded on the North-Brgy. Casica; South-Brgy. Bacong; East-Brgy. Poblacion and on the
West-Brgy. Almaria.

The name of the barangay was believed derived from the vast plain of land area which the old folks called it in their native twang
Tawid. It is characterized by level to gently sloping terrain, relatively flat and some parts of it are swamps which are dominated by
trees or shrubs.

Currently, these areas are now farmed with different rootcrops, rice and corn. Swamps are also now transformed into fish pond which
has a variety of fishes more specifically bangus. It is also inhabited by crabs, prawns, clams, among others. Public cemetery is also

INDAY POTENTICIANAS CHAPEL Conveniently situated beside Municipal Cemetery, the
remains of Potenciana Saranza or commonly known as Inday Potenciana was believed to be
mysterious and miraculous. Several people could vouch how they were healed by this woman
and shockingly found out that shes already passed away. She was born on May 19, 1927 at
Poblacion, Anda, Bohol. Her parents are Mamerto Cagata Saranza and Pilar Amplayo Escobal.
She studied her elementary education at Anda Central Elementary School and finished her high
School and College at Central Visayas Institute with a Teachers Degree. At the age of 26, she
practiced her educational degree at Bincalan Elementary School, Misamis Oriental. According
to those who knew her, she was so kind, helpful, hardworking and effeminate. A year later, on
April 1, 1953, she was about to go to Poblacion of Misamis Oriental when she got a ride to a
logging truck due to lack of transportation when the truck inevitably crashed on a coconut tree.
Due to fast and powerful impact of the truck, Inday Potenciana was moved out from truck
bumped on the coconut tree. She was dead on the spot in the cause of Internal Hemorrage.
Her uncle, Fortunate Amper took care and buried her body at Gingoog Cemetery. Nine years
later she was transferred to Anda via motorized outrigger boat owned by Quirino Visaya. She
was again buried in their home ground in Poblacion near Quinale Beach.

125
After one year, the Regional Health Officer, Dr. Garcia came to his attention that the body is
decaying, thus, hed seen an imperative defense by transferring her body to the municipal
cemetery. They enlisted the support of the Jail persons to move out from the ground. Finally,
when the coffin was out from the ground, the community was startled what they had seen. Her
body wasnt off. Just like few days ago she was buried. Dr. Garcia sprayed anti-bacteria to her
body and then finally buried in the Anda Cemetery. One month later, Dr. Garcia reportedly died
for high blood but according to the townfolks and followers of Inday Potenciana, he was being
terrified and dreamt of his being injustice and unbeliever. Though shrouded with mystery
followers still amass themselves every Fridays and Mondays of April, in commemoration of her
death anniversary and thanking her for her good deeds.
