Subject: PROPOSAL FOR JOINTS LEAKAGE TREAMENT

Dear Sir,
Reference our earlier letter No. CB/G/2016/116 dated. Dec 19, 2016 and subsequent meeting
with Director ( Civil) on Jan 04, 2017. We hereunder submit our revised proposal.

1.0 - OBSERVATIONS:

Presently the tunnel inner surface is partially covered with glass-wool insulation with protective
layer of GI sheets to avoid condensation problem. After inspection of the site, following points
were observed.
- Leakage from the construction joints both vertically and horizontally.
- Seepage spots were observed at some locations.
- To drain the water accumulated on positive side of the tunnel walls, weep holes were provided
at bottom level along entire wall length. The spacing of these weep holes was about 3 to 4
meter center to center and were connected with horizontal pipe. The pipes were PPR having
50-mm diameter, which is quite insufficient because the internal diameter is hardly 40-mm.
After some period the pipe will be choked, therefore a larger diameter pipe is required.
- The exposed surface of concrete was plastered and painted some time ago, insulated area
also requires treatment after removal of the same.
- Leakage & seepage was observed at points where the HVAC pipes / ducts are crossing the
tunnel , walls. To avoid spreading of water on tunnel floors, trays have been installed to collect
& drain out the said water
-

2.0 PROPOSAL, MATERIAL AND METHADOLOGY:-

2.1- REMOVAL OF EXISISTING GLASSWOOL & GI SHEETS:-

Since the concrete surface is partially covered with insulation and GI sheet covering, first
of all these need to be removed. Keeping in mind all the safety measures, necessary
platforms will be arranged. Then the GI sheets will be removed and stored in available
space at site. Thereafter the glass wool will be removed and collected in the polythene
bags. These waste materials will be transported to the designated place and stacked
there.

2.2- PREPARATION OF THE SURFACE:-

Since the surface covered with insulation and GI sheets is not visible, after removal of the
treatment , surface will be prepared for painting , if acceptable , painting will be done,
otherwise plaster will be applied and the painting will be carried out after wards
Page-1/4

2.3 -ASSESMENT REGARDING TREATMENT OF LEAKAGE:-

Since the major leakage is from the joints. It needs to be treated with Materials, like
Elastomeric Resin which can be easily injected into concrete and expands there to fill in
the voids, in the concrete. For purpose of injection, high pressure pumps will be used so
that it penetrates to the extreme ends of voids, construction joints and cracks in the
concrete. Generally 6000-8000 PSI pressure is maintained while injecting the Elastomeric
Resin material.( Brochure attached)

2.4 -ASSESMENT REGARDING LEAKGE AT CROSSING POINTS OF HVAC PIES

& DUCTS:-

Since during visit , there was no access to the points, the remedial proposals can only be
submitted after examination of the crossing points. It is therefore required that HVAC
people be engaged for diagnostic purpose. The remedies will be proposed and applied at
one point as a test case. After successful trial, the same will be applied at other locations.
3.0 PROCEDURE

3.1 INJECTION OF ELASTOMERIC RESIN MATERIAL

Injection Packers will be fixed at 45 angles along both sides of the seepage lines at an
interval of 6, which is adjusted as per site requirements. The packers are of 80mm
100mm and 150mm length. According to the depth of concrete and seepage intensity,
suitable packers will be arranged. To install the packers, holes will be drilled with the help
of vibratory drill machine using bits of required diameter and length.

As stated above, the injection is made using high pressure pumps; there are chances that
the injected material comes out along the crack / joint line. To avoid this strip 2 to 3 inch
wide of epoxy coating or epoxy putty filling will be done along these lines.

After ensuring that above arrangements are properly done, injection will be started from
one end and will proceed to the far end. The injection is continued until the material flow is
stopped or minimized to required level. The Elastomeric Resin material, when in contact
with water and air, creates a Gel in the inner side of the joints and stops the active water
permanently.

After the treatment is completed it should be kept under observation, if any leakage occurs
during next rainy season, it will be treated with the same procedure.
3.2 INSTALLATION OF DRAIN SYSTEM:-

The drain system will be replaced with uPVC pressure pipes of 3 dia. For this purpose,
core cutting will be carried out at old hole places and new weep-hole pipes will be inserted
and sealed with Epoxy / non-shrink grout & sealed with PU sealant. In case core cutting
cannot be done at old places , holes will be done at new places and old ones will be
plugged with epoxy mortar / non shrink /crystalline grout and sealed with PU sealant.
Thereafter all these pipes will be connected with 3 dia uPVC pressure pipe and drained to
the existing point of discharge. To facilitate maintenance, cleanouts will be provided at
some locations. If feasible, the pipes will be wrapped with GEO Textile to avoid chances
of blockage of perforations.

3.3 PAINTING WORK:-

After completion of the above items of works, the surface will be sanded & where required
filled with putty to receive the painting. When the surface has become smooth to the
acceptable condition, the painting with emulsion paint will be started. Normally three coats
of the paint are enough.

3.4 LEAKGE AT HVAC DUCTS/ PIPES CROSSING:-

Since at present the system is working and the exact nature of the problem cannot be
diagnosed. After mobilization at site, the procedure will be chalked our after coordination /
consultation with HVAC people.

4.0 ESTIMATED COST OF SEEPAGE LEAKAGE TREATMENT

4.1- ELASTOMERIC RESIN INJECTION:-
Since the material is to be injected into the concrete pores, construction joints & cracks the
quantities cannot be estimated in advance because the material consumption depends
upon concrete quality, joint width and depth. If concrete is porous inner cavities are more
than it appears on surface of the concrete and material consumed is more. Its
consumption can be given as an estimate, but not actual. Generally in good quality
concrete consumption is 100grm to 200 grm per rft of the crack/ joint. Rate of material are
as under.
4.2- MATERIAL COST
Elastomeric Resin Material Cost Rs 3750/-Per kg
Packer Cost For 80mm Rs 350/- Per No
For 100mm Rs 400/- Per No
For 150mm Rs 450/- Per No.
4.3- APPLICATION & SERVICES
Providing all tools & machinery, its transportation upto Rs 350/ Per Point/Hole
site & back. Drilling of holes and installation of packers.
Sealing with epoxy coating and injecting the chemical
with pressure pump

5.0 - INSTALLATION OF DRAIN:-

a- Providing & making of holes through the RCC wall, 3 to 4 Rs. 4500/- Per Rft
dia with core cutter machine, tools, plant and transportation
complete with all respect.
b- Providing & Fixing 3 dia UPVC Pipe Class-B including Rs 450/- Per Rft
special jointing solution, complete in all respect.
c- Providing & Fixing 3 dia UPVC Socket including special Rs 498/- Per Nos.
jointing solution, complete in all respect.
d- Providing & Fixing 3 dia UPVC Tee including special Rs 948/- Per Nos.

7.0- GI SHEET & GLASS WOOL:-

a. Removing of existing GI sheet & glass wool including
Cost of necessary platform scaffolding etc. Rs. 50/Sft
