1. Ahl al-Kitdb
All that has been said up to now is not sufficient for a modern
reappraisal of the notion of Revelation. There are many convic-
tions, beliefs, visions, and positions inherited from the traditional
interpretations which still dominate the mutual perceptions be-
tween Jews, Christians, and Muslims.
I have chosen the rich concept of Ahl al-Kitdb to illustrate a
pluralist reading of the Revelation manifested in the Qur'an, a
reading that aims at the integration of aspects of tradition, levels of
reality, methods of analysis, and horizons of knowledge often
separated in the positivist, specialized activities of modern reason.
The Ahl al-Kitdb-People of the Book-are the Jews and Chris-
tians with whom Muhammad had to deal in Mecca and Medina.
They are mentioned in the Qur'dn as the possessors of the ear
Revelation, the believers who are favored by God in the same way
as the Muslims, who have accepted the new Revelation. Abrah
was neither aJew nor a Christian, but a pure "Muslim", a believer
totally devoted to God. This perspective of spiritual history,
History of Salvation, is very clear in the Qur'dn, and it is an impo
tant dimension of a modern theology of Revelation.
But there is another presentation of Ahl al-Kitdb in the Qur'dn
Jews and Christians were opposed to Muhammad and his claim
be a prophet, and they refused to accept the Qur'dn as the ultim
Revelation of the Word of God. Social and political tensions, along
with an interesting symbolic competition, existed in Medina b
tween Ahl al-Kitdb and the new community of believers. It is a gr
pity that we do not have enough documentation of the issues
the discussions to which we find only short allusion in the Qur'd
Ahl al-Kitdb are assimilated to other people who went astray and a
used to strengthen the uniqueness and the authenticity of a n
