Application and a Companion Website for the Improvement of the Communication Skills
of Children with Autism: Clinical Rationale, Technical Development and Preliminary
Results. Journal of Medical Systems, Volume 35, Issue 4, Aug 2011, pp. 703-11.
Springer Science Business Media, LLC. Accessed 27 March 2017.

This article is about how people are helping children born with autism learn to better

communicate with others. The article goes into how they use pictures along with the words and

the word being said to help the child with autism learn the words easier. They used the PixTalk

app and website. They had three different groups one group used the app. One group used the

website and the last one was the control group. All of the groups were children that had autism

and it was used in the classroom. After their experiment they found that the use of websites and

apps on the phone help children with autism learn better than if they do not use a website or an

app.

This article relates to my topic as it shows that apps can help students and children learn

things faster and better. This article focuses on children with autism but it still shows that the use

of apps can help students do better in class.

Gianluca De Leo one of the authors of the article is a professor at augusta university. He

specializes in Human computer interaction. He also has worked a lot with special education. The
Parkhurst 2

article was in the Journal of Medical Systems which is a well respected journal that has papers

on the research done such as this article.

WALLING, DONOVAN R. DESIGNING LEARNING FOR TABLET CLASSROOMS. Place of

publication not identified: SPRINGER INTERNATIONAL PU, 2016. Print.

This book is about how tablets are being used in classrooms to help students. The book

talks about how many kids that are in school now own a cell phone and that they author wanted

to see how tablets could be used in classrooms to help students pay attention and learn faster and

learn more information. The book talks about how not only it helps the students but also cuts

down on the amount of paper used in a classroom which is good for the environment.

This relates to my topic as it shows that not only outside of the classroom could apps help

with students learning but it can also help students learn in the classroom.

The author Donovan R. Walling is an educator and educator consultant who has wrote

many other books on education and how to better educate students in the classroom.

Kucirkova, Natalia, and Garry Falloon. Apps, technology and younger learners: international
evidence for teaching. Abingdon, Oxon: Routledge, an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group,
2017. Print.

This book goes into detail about the use of apps in the classroom and outside of the

classroom. It goes into how the apps can help students improve grades and how the apps can

support what the student learned in class that day. It goes into how studies have been done and

the results as to if the use of apps are a good thing or a bad thing.
Parkhurst 3

This relates to my topic because it is all about how apps are used and if they are a good

thing for kids to use in and out of school. It goes into detail as to if it is even a good thing to use

apps over traditional ways to teach/ learn something. This helps me see if apps are even a good

thing to use to help students learn something.

Natalia Kucirkova who is one of the editors is a Senior Research follower at University

college in London. Who is apart of the institute of education. Garry Falloon is a professor in

digital learning at the university of Waikato.

McQuiggan, Scott, Lucy Kosturko, Jamie McQuiggan, and Jennifer Sabourin. Mobile Learning:
A Handbook for Developers, Educators, and Learners. Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley & Sons, 2015.
Print.

This book goes into how smartphones can make learning more interactive and

entertaining for students. It talks about how with smartphones you can use pictures that students

can interact with that make it easier to show examples than just using a image that does not move

and is only in the front of the room. It talks about how it smartphones could help people with

disabilities learn something that they want to learn about.

This relates to my topic as it talks about using smartphones in class. Also using a

smartphone to learn something outside of the classroom. It shows that using a phone/app can

help students learn more and pay more attention to a subject they normally would not want to

pay attention to.

Scott McQuiggan has a PhD in computer science with a focus in app development and

educational technology. Lucy Kosturko is an educational psychologist. The other 2 are

programmers that care about children's education.

Kesselman-Turkel, Judi, and Franklynn Peterson. Study smarts: how to learn more in less
time. Madison: U of Wisconsin Press, 2003. Print.

This book is about study skills for middle and high school students to help them do better

in classes. It talks about how students should research and it also helps to improve grammar. It

goes over many different ways to study and how to take better notes in classes.

This relates to my topic as I want to know the different study methods that can be used in

an app to make it easier for students to study and learn about any subject that they wish to look

into.

Judi Kesselman-Turkel has written many books about how to study better and how to

take tests better. Franklynn Peterson has written books on how to study better and how to learn

english.
