Client Profile
Eric Neymar, 40, is a Brazilian entrepreneur of a start-up software company. He lives alone but,
occasionally hosts friends/family. He enjoys entertaining both casually and formally and
listening to music. His hobbies include socializing and playing soccer. He likes being part of a
community with history and having access to numerous restaurants and pubs. He will be
moving into a mixed-use building, on Main Street, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His
requirements in his new home are; three bedrooms, a small powder room or full bath on the
second level (depending on the layout of the bedrooms), living space and dining options, home
office, a laundry space, linen and clothing storage, and a custom designed built-in storage piece
with display space. Being a collector of wine, he would like a room for wine storage. He
responds to minimalism within his space both physically and visually. He prefers natural
lighting; artificial lighting should only provide ambience/sparkle with required task lighting.
He likes a neutral color scheme with some pops of color. His style preference is Bauhaus. Mr.
Neymar is working with a high budget.

To modify the original, analogous color palette the palette was deepened. Using the
deepened version, of the color palette, adjustments were made to the hue, saturation, and

monochromatic color scheme. The modified color palette achieves more depth and
masculine feel and will provide the neutral color scheme with color accents the client
prefers.

Discussion Topic
Identify the code organization followed in your locality for residential buildings. Select a topic from Part I and compare the factors of
the researched codes to the codes for new construction in your own locality. Discuss the reasons for any similarities or differences.
The City of Cleveland for Residential Buildings follow the International Code Council(ICC). These codes make sure that all
existing and new construction are built to provide a safe dwelling environment for the public (Building and Housing). The
City must also follow Codes of the state. For example, The Ohio Code of Ordinance, this Code is compatible with ADA
standards. With Residential Design, it is essential to have guidelines that are followed to construct a safe environment for
people to live in. For example, Code 403.10 smoke alarms, address one element of the systems theory of fire safety
(Harmon, 275). Smoke Alarms address the alarm system, allowing for a device to set off a signal that notifies the occupant
or public of a fire and it can also notify the fire department. This type of system can be beneficial for life safety and in
reducing property damage. Interior Designers will also use the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes as well.
NFPA1 focuses on a complete range of life safety issues including fire protection systems and equipment and occupant safety
in new and existing buildings to hazardous materials, flammable and combustible liquids, LP-Gas, and more (NFPA 2016).
Code 405.3 states that the fire escape should be able to support a live load of 100 pounds per square foot and that it
should be made of steel or some other non-combustible material. For new construction, Chapter 10 of the IBC lays out a
very detailed description of means of egress, which factors in the amount, the size, and the placement of stairwells. This is
calculated by the occupant load, and building type. Stairwells along with corridors, area of refuge all support the life safety.
This is very different from the Code 405.3 of the IEBC. According to the NFPA journal published Sept 4, 2014, for over
100 years the Life Safety Code suggest enclosed rated stairwells as an adequate reliable and easy means of egress. The NFPA
viewed fire escapes as more of a complicated solution to the bigger problem of getting people out faster and safely if a fire
was to occur (Baldassarra). Design professional are encouraged to not use fire escapes and to look for better egress
opportunities whenever possible (Baldassarra).

Residential Design 1
Professor Michelle Kirkpatrick
W6A1
May 6, 2017
Selina Marie Passaretti
Justification
My client was Eric Neymar. He wanted a space that was aesthetically pleasing, open and
airy, and promoted socialization, while keeping with his preferred style, Bauhaus. Bauhaus style
uses materials, such as but not limited to, metals, concrete, or brick, shapes are highly geometric.
Furniture is very streamlined with many horizontal and vertical lines and ninety degree angles.
This created a challenge of designing a space that fit the style, while still creating a warm, cozy
and inviting feel. To do so furniture, lighting, and accent pieces were carefully selected. Textiles,
such as, area rugs, draperies, and throws were used to find the solution to creating a warm and
inviting feel, texture and contrast the Bauhaus style furniture. Lighting fixtures and placement
continued the style and feel. Furniture layout was planned and designed specifically to promote
socialization, as per the clients request, flow and visual pattern. An analogous color scheme, of
shades of grays and blues, offered an open and airy feel and a sense of masculinity. Using a color
scheme and period style furniture throughout the home, gave the design a unified and balanced
appearance with a harmonious feel. Accents were used to not only tie the design together but,
also create points of interest. The use of schematic plans showed where revisions to some design
decisions were needed. The schematics showed which furniture arrangement had the best layout,
circulation pattern and where each piece fit best within the space. I feel, the end result of, my
design has not only met all of my clients wants/needs, is functional and aesthetically pleasing
but, has also met many design principles and elements.
Reflection
Residential Design 1 has taught me so much. Working with one client, from beginning to
end, as a professional designer does, was a great way to continue to learn and practice the design
process. I truly enjoyed all aspects of this course, from sticking with one style, designing, space
planning, to critiquing and editing my work. All, has taught me how to become better at what I
aspire to be and what I am earning a degree for. While researching codes was not the most fun
part of the design process, it is an extremely important part of it. Ensuring the safety and well-
being of clients is just as important as the functionality and aesthetics of interior design. Building
a study model was an equally important step, in the design process, to be able to visually see how
the design and furniture layout will look and function. Being able to physically manipulate the
scaled furniture within the scaled space helped a great deal in finding what worked and what did
not work, and being able to problem solve areas to come up with the best layout possible.
Finding inspiration for a color scheme and delving more into color theory was another great
aspect of this course. I will surely take all that I have learned during this course and continue to
use and build upon it throughout my academic journey and into my career.
