QUESTION 1

(a) Explain the capabilities of computer in terms of:

(i) SPEED

The frequency of the data travelling in between the processes.

(ii) ACCURACY

Inconsistent of information during retrieving the data.

(iii) REALIBILITY

Capability of a computer-related hardware or software component to consistently

perform based on its specification.

(iv) STORAGE CAPACITY

The computers have a lot of a storage devices which can store a large amount of data
in the hard disk.

(v) COMMUNICATION

Enables computer users to communicate and exchange items such as data, instructions
and information with another computer.

b) Differentiate between a desktop computer and a laptop computer.

Desktop computer

Desktop typically have a separate keyboard and mouse and the central processing unit
can be from the computer monitor.
An average desktop has more hard drive spare, a faster central processor and better
graphics performance them an average laptop with a standard hardware configuration.

Laptop computer

Easy to carried in a case or bag.

A laptop is an all-in-one machine, with the screen, keyboard and mouse built into the
devices.
(c) Discuss about Intel Processors and AMD Processors.

Intel Processors

The ability of Intel's marketing department to outspend and out-think other continues.
Intel's upcoming processors into account.
Intel's dominant market position means that many operating chips in mind.

AMD Processors

AMD is the second largest maker of personal computer microprocessors after Intel.
AMD position as underdog is a consistent one.
They also make flash memory Integrated circuits for networking devices and programmable
logic devices.

QUESTION 2

(a) What are the function of input and output devices? Describe any THREE(3) example for
the input devices and any THREE(3) example for the output devices.

Function of the operating system is handling input and output as well as enabling
communication with input and output devices.

Example of Input

Computer keyboard
Microphones
Mouse (trackball)

Example of Output

Printer
Speaker
Headphones
(b) What are primary and secondary storage? Differentiate between hard disk and solid-state
storage.

A computer's internal hard drives is often considered a primary storage devices, while
external hard drives and other external media are considered secondary storage
devices.

Hard disks

The traditional spinning hard drive is the basic non volatile storage on a computer.
A hard drives is essentially a metal platter with a magnetic coating that store your
data, whether reports from the last century , a high-definition copy of the Star Wars
trilogy, or your digital music collection.
To program all kind of data and application and used we needed.

Solid-state storage

An SSD does functionally everything a hard drive does, but data is instead stored on
interconnected flash memory chips that retain the data even when there no power
present.
SSD are consequently more expensive than USB thumb drives of the same capacities.
The chips can either be permanently installed on the system's motherboard (as an
some small laptops an ultraportable), on a PCI Express (PCIE) card (in some high-end
workstations are increasing number bleeding-edges consumer systems), or in the box
that 's sized, shapes and wired to slot in far a laptops or desktop's hard drive (common
on everything else).

QUESTION 3

(a) What is the devices as shown in Figure 1?

Motherboard

(b) Name and explain the function for each label (A-L) given.

A - Audio port

This is use to connect the speaker , mike, and MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital
Interface) devices of the computer.
B - LAN port

To connect Internet cable.

C - Parallel port

To connect CPU to Monitor.

D -USB port

To connect external devices such like pen drive , mouse and all accessories using
USB port.

E - Power Input connector

Main power supply to Motherboard.

F -CPU Socket

Data processors.

G - 4 RAM memory slots

Speed up the computer processors.

H - Floppy connecter

To connect floppy disk drive.

I - Primary 80A connector

To connect hard drive.

J - CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor)

To maintain the real time clock.

K - 1 AGP slots (Accelerated Graphics Interconnect)

To accelerated computer graphics and video.

L - 3PCI slots (Peripheral Component Interconnect)

Better performance scaling bus devices.

QUESTION 4

(a) Convert the following octal number to its binary 8-bit representations.

7 6 5 4 3 2 1

111 110 101 100 11 10 1

(i) 1 7 28

001 111 010 = 1728 : 001 111 0102

(ii) 2 5 48

010 101 100 = 2548 : 010 101 1002

(iii) 3 6 18

011 110 001 = 3618 : 011 110 0012

(b) Differentiate between Real-time OS and Single-user / Single-tasking OS.

Real -time OS

*Which process data as it comes in, typically without buffering delay.

*Real -time OS provides a predication or deterministic execution pattern.

*Real -time OS is more frequently, dedicated to a narrow set of application.

Single user

*This operating system is designed to manage the computer so that one user can effectively
do one thing at a time.

*Modern of single-user.

*Modern of single-tasks operating system.

(c) Discuss the characteristic of Serial Ports and Parallel Ports.

Serial Ports

*Serial Ports are still used as they are simple, cheap and their console function are highly

standardized and widespread.

*Serial Ports requires very little supporting software from the host system.

*Data was transferred through serial ports to devices such as moderns terminals and

various peripherals.

*Serial communication interface through which information transfer in or out one bit at a

time to devices.

Parallel Ports

*Be larger than contemporary serial ports which only require on data line.

*A Parallel Ports is a type of interface found on computers for connecting peripherals.

*Parallel Port uses a 25 pin connector interface communication a devices it is computer

and printer.

*It used connect the printer ,computer and other devices.

(d) What is virus? Briefly discuss TWO (2) example of anti-virus software.

* A computer virus is a program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer
without you knowledge and runs against your wishes.

** Example : - AVG and Panda

- Norton
