Indonesia In Depth

Opinion | 18 Nov 2015

If you are considering Indonesia as a new market or expanding your presence in the
country, it is vital to gain a thorough understanding of the operating environment - in
terms of economic growth, the business environment, demographic trends and the
income and spending priorities of the population. Building a thorough awareness of
consumer attitudes, motivations and lifestyles is equally vital. This holistic approach to
reaching consumers is crucial to success.

The total retail value of the

Indonesian m-commerce market stood
at US$1.3 billion in 2014, a growth of
691% in real terms over 2010, the
earliest year for available data. The
market is expected to grow to US$3.4
billion by 2019 (latest forecast year
available), a 98.2% expansion in real
terms over 2015;

The country obtained 43.6% of its

total primary energy consumption from
crude oil in 2014, followed by coal, at 33.6% in the same year. However, the
government is looking to source 15.0% of its total energy generation from renewable
sources by 2025. Much of the focus is, therefore, being diverted to the
hydroelectricity and biomass sectors;

In 2014, the highest concentration of total gross income in Indonesia was recorded
in the age band 15-34. While the typical average gross income of this age segment is
relatively low (ranging between US$860 and US$3,870), the large number of individuals
in this age group results in a high concentration of income for this age segment. In
2014, Indonesians aged 15-34 represented 34.0% of the country's total population.
Young consumers, therefore, are a compelling target for consumer businesses in
Indonesia.
