The Forty-Fifth

On January 20th, 2017, Donald Trump made history by officially being sworn into office

as the forty-fifth president. However, the days following his appointment to office have likewise

proven to be exponentially crucial in the history of his presidency. Just days after his

inauguration, the public and their opinion, regarding Trump and his admiration, have told the

story of a nation divided. While many revel in the thought of a new administration, a parallel

amount of people question the character of the new president. As a result, social media outlets

have become the battleground to either endorse or criticize Trump: a place where weapons

consist of rhetoric, evidence, and the mind behind the screen.

A pivotal factor in regards to Trumps success as president is his history in the political

circuit, and or lack of. Prior to running for election, Trump was primarily known and idolized for

his success as a businessman, media personality, and real estate developer. Many believed him to

be the epitome of the American dream. Because of this, supporters of Trump believe that he is

not only willing, but capable of managing the government effectively. They also argue that his

lack of a political career positively separates him from the corruption of the political hierarchy

because his campaign is not centered around re-elected but rather around making America great

again. And while that builds trust among his supporters, those who oppose Trump argue that his

lack of political experience hinders his ability to communicate with politicians on a national and

global scale. His inexperience also leaves those on the opposition with skepticism. Without a

prior political career, how can one conclude whether Trump is in fact a man of his word or where

his true political alliances lay. In addition, those of the opposition call into question comments

made previously by Trump in regards to women, minorities, and other groups. They argue that

such comments are discriminative and isolate such groups from society rather that integrate

them. In response, supporters claim that such comments were made out of context by liberal

media outlets seeking to scrutinize Trumps character.

While both sides present equal and valid points regarding Donald Trump as a person,

neither side can efficiently pass judgment on him as a president yet. Trump by all intents and

purposes has shown apparent strengths and faults during the election process but the real trial is

how he proceeds as chief commander. And ultimately despite the animosity between Trump

supporters and opposers, both can agree that unity among the people and their government is

universally needed in order for the nation to succeed as one.
