Objective: Comparing numbers in a variety of contexts

Variety of Learners: To account for different learners, change the context in which you are
comparing numbers. For lower students, use a number line to compare numbers, and simple
money values. For higher students, use large numbers in base 10 blocks, larger values of
money, and have them create their own greater than/less than scenarios.

Before Teacher Students

Time: Using a whiteboard, draw the greater

than, less than, and equal to symbols.

Ask student if he/she remembers what Student attempts to tell what

the symbols mean and when we use symbols mean and when we use
them. them.

After they answer, provide any

3min clarification needed to move forward in
their understanding of the symbols.

Give a simple example on the Student acknowledges that it was

Ask them if you did it correctly.

Tell student that you will be doing this

using numbers and money.

During Teacher Students

Time: Using money, make two different piles

with different amounts. Ask the student
to help count what is in each pile. Write Student counts the money in each

the student to decide which one has

If the student is confused, and unsure
which pile has more money, pull out a
number chart or number line to help
them visualize the numbers in a different
way.

Continue doing examples with them,

correcting and clarifying as needed.

Encourage student to look at the value of

the first coin, and count on from there.
