Annotated bibliography based on the research question,
Why does it take society so long to adapt to new scientific research?

Abbott, J. (1994). Adapting Education to the Modern World. Journal of


Education Finance, 19(4), 1-6.
Abbott introduces the concept that societal changes in science should not be ignored, a
person should not ignore the changes going on around them, instead they should act and
accept them. In this article, he talks about how our minds have an infinite capacity to
learn, and uses the example of a child quickly and easily learning technology without a
proper teacher. However, he brings up the point of how environmental factors can bring
limitations to the knowledge we are capable of having. This article will help me by
bringing up the important point that environmental factors influence the way we think,
and that is one of the reasons as to why it takes society so long to adapt to scientific
change.

In this article, Andersen focuses on the origin of scientific change as well as the
philosophical origin of the process that accepting scientific change brings to a person's
mind. She introduces several ideas philosophers of science have had about the issue of
scientific change, as well as several theories they had as to where it originated from.
Andersen also provides a wide variety of facts and resources about the issue being
discussed, and explains each idea and philosophy thoroughly. This particular article
helped me understand the fundamental concept which is the guide to accepting scientific
change should not be focused on changing pre-existing human behavior but rather
understanding the origin of it all.

The health report given by the authors focuses on providing an explanation as to why
scientific findings sometimes are not translated for the general public. The authors
explain that sometimes researchers focus merely on finding a major health contributions,
however they do not focus on disseminating their research for the general public. The
authors however, came up with a plan that will help translate these findings for a positive
outcome that will benefit the public. In their four-phase plan, they discuss their ideas
starting with discovery then moving towards translation to the general public, to
dissemination and change. This report has given me some insight into answering part of
the main question this research is focused on.

Danziger, J. N. (1985, March). Social Science and the Social Impacts of


Computer Technology. Social Science Quarterly, 66(1), 3-21.
This article focuses on the impacts computer technologies will have in the future, and
how theyre essential to the area of social scientific research. It is interesting because the
article was written thirty years ago, so it brings insight as to how people thought this
computer revolution would turn out now. Danziger also provides eight generalizations
from general research on the social impact of computing. This article will help reflect the
importance of accepting scientific change, and how it is essential to a future filled with
more possibilities. This article will also assist in providing the audience with an insight
with comparing scientific research from thirty years ago, to how life is really life
currently.

Demetriou, A. (2003, July). Mind, Self and Personality: Dynamic Interactions


From Late Childhood to Early Adulthood. Journal of Adult Development,
10(3).
This article focuses on the development of the human brain, focusing more on theories of
how the mind's thinking process is structured. The researchers that wrote this article
tested their theory, by conducting and providing data for various experiments, that the
mind can be subdivided into three levels. The first level includes the how environment
affects cognitive and social realms, the second deals with self-identity and the third deals
with the self. This article will help me analyze the question in focus at a deeper more
cognitive level, deriving an explanation starting from thought process. This article also
assisted me in understanding how the three levels of the mind and personality interact
with each other, and exactly which ones affect the others directly.

This web page is a biography of the scientist Galileo Galilei, the authors of the biography
focus on all aspects of his life. They include how at the time scientists were considered to
be foolish, since most of society followed a strict religion. At the time of his major
discoveries, Galileo tried to prove that the solar systems revolved around the sun and not
the earth as it was thought to believe. However, when he published his findings, the
government wanted to send him to jail to serve a life sentence. This web page will help
me in providing proof that this sort of thing has happened all throughout history, and
bring some insightful background on the question in topic.

Shirk, J. L., Bellard, H. L., & Wildermen, C. C. (2012). Public Participation in


Scientific Research: a Framework for Deliberate Design. Ithaca, NY: The
Resilience Alliance.
Shirk and her associates focus on bringing a consensus on how an increase in scientific
participation from society would benefit both the outcome of scientific experiments and it
would also benefit society. Their report includes their analysis on several public
participation in scientific research projects, where their conclusion is that project
outcomes are always focused on the amount of public participation and the way the
researchers incorporate public participation. This report helps me form an alternative
opinion as to how individuals can speed up the process for accepting and adapting to
scientific innovations, by involving themselves in participating in scientific research.
