The way certain colleges choose the students they admit into their university has been a big

controversy all over the country. Many people question and are unsure about what kind of
qualities and accomplishments they review before accepting a student. One of the most
controversial aspects that some colleges look at is race. Its controversial because some
students are admitted to a college not because of just their scores or extracurricular
accomplishments, but because of the color of their skin. This subject even got brought to the
supreme court, Fisher V. University of Texas. Abigail Fisher, who just so happened to be white,
got denied from the University of Texas and she believed she got denied because of her race.
There are many different arguments that are for and against the idea of looking at race when
granting a student admission. Aje Forum, an author of an article that talks specifically about this
court case argues that achieving a heterogeneous student body constitutes a compelling state
interest because society is diverse, and institutions of higher education must be diverse in order
to achieve their missions of preparing young people to work and live alongside people who are
different from themselves. He is saying that they should consider race as an aspect because
society needs to become more diverse especially in places like universities so people can learn
about people who are different from them.
