Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event:
TTW ask children to tell you what they know about length.
TTW ask students to name some things that you think are long. Name some things
that you think are short. Which is longer a marker or a ruler?
Teaching/ Learning Procedures:
Explore/Explain:
TTW ask students if they remember when we measured our friends. Some were taller
than ____, some were shorter than ____, and some were the same. Sometimes you want
to put items in order, so you might start shortest, longest with the tallest and go towards
the shortest. Sometimes you might start from the shortest and go towards the tallest.
TTW call 3-4 students to stand up and put them in order from shortest to tallest. TTW
model how to estimate by saying I can estimate who will be shorter but then I need to
measure. I need to be sure that their feet are lined up and no one is standing on their toes.

Elaborate/Guided Practice: TTW repeat several times switching between shortest to

tallest and tallest to shortest. Have students assist you as you do this.

Formative Check (ongoing or specific):

Daily Assessment Task activity

Closure:
TTW pair students up. Each partner group will need vocabulary cards (longest and
shortest) and at least three straws cut to various lengths.
TTW inform students today you and your partner will put these straws in order. You can
make them go from shortest to longest or longest to shortest. It is up to you, but you
HAVE to label it correctly. Students will use the vocabulary cards for support.
As the students are working, TTW give them a midway teaching point, BOYS and
GIRLS it is really important that you remember to line up the bottom of your straws
(model the correct way and the incorrect way).
TTW circulate and support students in their tasks.

Assessment/Summative Evaluation:
Summative- End of unit assessment on measurement

Modifications/Notes:
Intervention:
ELL Language Support: use page 659 of TE Show a simple drawing of two children of
different heights. Discuss which child is taller. Write the word taller over the taller child
and shorter over the shorter child. Have children draw a picture of a park. Tell them to
include two of each object, with one shorter than the other. For example, one slide is
shorter than the other slide. then have them identify the taller object and the shorter
object. You may want to have them label the objects.
RTI Tier 1: use Lesson 94

Enrichment: (above average students)

Go Math Activity: use page 660 of TE Have children browse pictures of animals. Ask
children to draw a grown-up animal and a baby animal and label the pictures with the
appropriate word pair: short/shorter, tall/taller, and long/longer
